I like the mexican ranchero music on the radio. I like when they sing slightly out of tune and have horses neighing in the backround. I also like "Porch Music"

hdn2mx - 4-28-2010 at 11:29 AM

Love reggae too.

If you've never heard of Luky Dube, give him a try.

Love Jack Johnson too. And if you like Jack I just found this guy and he has a little touch of reggae in his tunes:

http://www.marcbmusic.com/

Listen to "democracy" and "comin' up" for starters.

plus he has all his lyrics there.

Enjoy the ride, RT

ILikeMex - 4-28-2010 at 02:33 PM

How can you tell? - listen to the lyrics....."baby you're so nice, I like to do the same thing twice" :O I find that a lot of Regaee songs are of this nature.

I'm going to look up Big Mountain - I like regaee in other languages. I dig the African funk too

David K - 4-28-2010 at 02:35 PM

No Parliament type funk, but that is what it seems to be rererred to on youtube

Heather - 4-28-2010 at 02:49 PM

I'll have to look up some of the youtube stuff when I get home from work...none of that available here on campus (although I'm sure my students can get around it!).

I like the African stuff, too...Tuku music; Olvier Mtukudzi, Fela Kuti to name a couple. I always see what they're playing at the SD Zoo or Wild Animal Park and look for that!

I have a few CD's of Putumayo disc. It's World Music with different collections; Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Latin, etc., etc.

Also love Ozomatli, Carlos Vives, Mana, and my all time #1 Pato Banton.

Great message in the reggae...DK, you sound like my students, but it's not all about the ganja!

Yah mon... rasta...

landyacht318 - 4-28-2010 at 02:59 PM

Heather thanks for the list of artists to check out.

Here's some Mid 70's Nigerian Reggae.

Cloud 7

While I have a good amount of Fela Kuti, it does not really do too much for me.

Now this is similar to Fela, but IMO, way better, but I cannot find more of it:

Ebo Taylor

Cnet has a good Utube to MP3 converter that has vastly improved my music collection.

From ZimbabweThomas Mapfumo

Thomas has a Song called Juanita. I cannot post a free link to it. Amazon MP3 sells it. From the Gwindingi Rine Shumba album. It is a poor recording quality, but has an unbelieveable beat.

I was listening to it in my vehicle in a parking lot by the beach and was asked to turn it up by some African women. They went absolutely nuts dancing and drew quite an audience. Wish I took Video. The cops came, and waited till the song was over before asking me to turn it down.

How could we forget Jim Morison and the Doors too. Seems like most of their desert tripping songs were made with Baja in mind.

When you cross the border and travel into the Baja, it is through one of the biggest, coolest and instant "doorways" I can think of. (According to some of the books on them, The Doors band name is a metaphor for such "Doors") -

castaway$ - 4-29-2010 at 09:27 PM

If you want to try some new Reggae/Funk pull up "Indubious" on your computer. They are a local So. Oregon band that is on their way up, they just started playing them on about 60 radio stations across the U.S. and they are one of the top requested bands for "World Music". They just finished the first leg of a west coast tour and the next leg takes them all through Cali including San Diego. Definitly worth seeing.

castaway$ - 4-29-2010 at 09:32 PM

Check out Alcyon Massive on your computer also. Last trip down Baja we were listening to both Indubious and Alcyon Massive and our mexican friends LOVED them both, I ended up giving away my extra copies.

landyacht318 - 4-30-2010 at 12:10 AM

Although Tommy McCook played with a lot of groups, I had not heard of him, despite my love of reggae, until last year.

Keep the obscure or less known gems coming.

last trip down the ipod regurgitated an old U2 song, "one tree hill" that had me dancing around the fire, i rewound it 5 times until i could sing the song. something about the desert brings it out of me.

the beauty of the ipod is you never have to hear the same song twice, unless "that certain song" pops up that just fits your mood.

woody with a view - 11-7-2010 at 08:01 PM

or Santana's "Hold On" always gets me groovin. especially after a day of mostly empty waves, with muscles aching from catching dozens of waves under the blazing sun. and then put his tune on while watching the sun set on another glorious day....

Don't rush me just this once
I want to make this moment last
Slow down the pace, there's no hurry
I can't let another pass me by again
Let me be the one to say when I've had enough

Just let me close my eyes, memorize
The way things are this minute
So when you're gone I can go on
If memory can hold on within it what I'm feeling
Should time try fading or stealing something away

CHORUS:
Hold on, nothing's the same
Tell me why I feel this way
Life wouldn't be worth living without you
All along I've been the pretender
But now that's gone forever
Nobody's ever loved me like you do
Nobody's broken through

Got to concentrate, file away
Every last detail
Don't want to lose what's going down
I want to remember everything I'm feeling
Should time try fading or stealing something away

This is a good thread, thanks for digging it up. I will need to check some of this stuff out, but can't currently because of work.

I like a little rock en español for the baja mood. Like ska? Check out Panteón Roccocó, Tijuana No! (featuring Julieta Venegas as lead signer), La lupita and Maldita Vecindad. Juanes is great for relaxing but still doesn't beat Maná.

BajaRat - 11-9-2010 at 11:36 AM
