the police have to stop these armed barricades .... this is simply unacceptable ...

paulb87 - 6-15-2010 at 09:38 AM

Targeted drug hits is one thing but when they target norte americanos with SUV's and trucks, thats getting very serious. Makes you wonder why the richest drug cartels would carjack instead of quietly buying thousand of their own drug vehicles??
But then again this conflict in Mexico makes no sense. If they went to Avis or Budget rent a car..they could use the rental car defence for the drugs on board.

I'm sure it's not the cartel leaders that are doing the street crimes. It's their scummy little soldiers who are left unemployed between drug moving activities or when their faction of the trade ceases to exist.
It's been asked here many times what these workers would do when the cartels are wiped out. [???]
Well, this is it.

You may be right, Dennis.:(:?: As you know, I want the cartel violence to stop and still believe that legalizing drugs can help, but this thing, targeting gringos, is what we all fear. Up to now we have gotten a pass. I hope we do not become targets.

meth tweakers and fringe ner-do-wells rarely put much thought into their plans. i don't think they were targeting gringos -- probably just targeting SUVs on a lonely road at night.

wrong place, wrong time -- remind yourself, don't drive at nite!

I don't see it as having gotten a pass, Tony. We were being targeted. Remember the car-jackings and the robberys?
We, in a rare display of solidarity, rebelled loudly and the tourism industry paid attention. Authorities stepped in and largely put a stop to it only because the press was reporting the crime and nobody wanted to take a chance below the border.
The press, for reporting the incidents, was blamed for crying wolf and ruining the Baja economy which was total nonsense.

My point is, if we hang together and use our voice, we may be afforded the protection which we deserve. We did it once and we can do it again.

seems to be several versions of the story...

CTV.ca News Staff

A Canadian was killed and another seriously injured in Mexico last week when a teenager opened fire on them in an attempted car jacking.

Kenneth Klowak, 43, was reportedly in Mexico to build trails for hikers and mountain bikers at a local resort when he was killed.

The shooting took place five days ago in the state of Coahuila, about 65 kilometres from Eagle Pass, a Texas border town.

Police in Eagle Pass told CTV Toronto that a teenaged boy approached the Chevrolet Suburban that Klowak and two other men were riding in.

The trio had stopped for lunch and when they attempted to drive away, the teen allegedly jumped on the vehicle and opened fire. Klowak was shot twice in the face and died at the scene.

Other reports say the trio had driven through a roadblock set up by their assailants.

"It happened very fast," said Sgt. Moses Pina with the Eagle Pass police force. "The people in the vehicle were very much in fear of their lives. They were trying to get away."

Another member of the group was shot in the head, U.S. investigators say, while the third passenger was taken hostage by the suspects and later released.

U.S. investigators say that Mexican drug cartels often target SUVs and pick-up trucks, and use local teenagers to help steal them.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it knew of one Canadian citizen who had died in Mexico's Piedras Negras region, but did not give the victim's name.

"Canadian consular officials in Monterrey and Mexico City are working closely with local authorities to gather additional information, and are providing consular assistance to the family," said Dana Cryderman, a department spokesperson.

Klowak's parents live north of Orangeville. They declined to speak to CTV News, saying the situation was too sensitive.

A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday in Orangeville, Ont.

With a report from CTV Toronto's John Musselman and files from The Canadian Press

Losing your homes at the South Campo, murdering you for for a SUV, unchecked violence everywhere, corrupt police and officials, an inept government who speaks out against lawbidding AZ citizens and their new law, etc, etc, etc. Mexico is not heading for the toilet, its already there. Just a lawless bunch of criminals & racist hypocrits.

If you know what you know now would you still move to Mexico? Alot of you are financially stuck in Mexico and have to make the most of it. Three years ago I was planning on retiring in Mulege. I'm now spending my lifetime of savings elsewhere.

Folks get carjacked in the U.S. too. It sounds like he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This is NOT GOOD no matter how you look at it. While personally I feel safe in Mexico (stupid??) I would never forgive myself if something like this happens while traveling with my wife down there.

I love Mexico but this type of violence may even scare me away from going. Will keep monitoring for sure. As I am in the process of looking for a place to buy down there this certainly puts a chill on things. Oh well, it does happen all the time here in Los Angeles so some more thought will need to go into this problem for sure.

Sure

Careful comparing the two the countries...a few old blow hards might question the relevancy....but I agree with you.

Sure?

lookingandbuying - 6-15-2010 at 01:59 PM

No up here they don't blockade the road/freeway...they just shoot you while you are driving along minding your own business. And, if you just happen to cut someone off by accident, they really get into a road rage and spray you along with any small children in your car.:?::?:

Also, another big difference here is that it is just random rage/violence. In Mexico, they are generally trying to get what you have.

The tweaker epidemic is the root of all evil.

The victim was a Canadian, you know, from Canada. It could be he was in the wrong country at the wrong time.

And this has what, to do with Baja?

A bad incident for sure! But I remember a couple years ago when a fellow Canuck got killed in Acupulco I think, the CBC and other media in Canada made violence in Mexico a spotlight issue. Until after weeks of milking this a reporter with the CBC finally compared homicides in the US of Canadian citizans to those that happened in Mexico during like a 15 year period. The stat came out to be something like 35-45 killed in the US versus 15-20 in Mexico. His point was that it did not stop Canadians from cross border shopping or vacationing in America, nor did it elicit such media attention.

Since we're commenting off the subject, why was he making trails for hikers and bikers? On whose property? What hikers? What bikers? Trails in Jamaica? Who was his employer? Doesn't sound right to me.
