Show me your palapa and I'll show you mine!!

CortezBlue - 6-18-2010 at 09:58 AM

Ok, so as we speak my palapa is being built in San Felipe. However, I am not there.

I will get to see it the next I am down in a week. My neighbor, who is watching the progress, told me it looks great. It is 18 feet accross, 3 posts and 14 feet high.

I would like to see how you set your palapa up.

vandenberg - 6-18-2010 at 12:35 PM

Three posts :?::?:

Love to see pictures of that one.

Hook - 6-18-2010 at 12:39 PM

Must be round. Only one measurement across.

Packoderm - 6-18-2010 at 01:17 PM

I for one would love to see pictures of people's palapas. It seems like a fun and adventurous way to live or vacation. If and when I get to the point where I will get to build a palapa, I would like to hire a palapa builder to teach me how to build one, or I would just try to wing it. I would seem that bare wood pushed into the sand would get termites really fast. There must be a way to place a barrier between the sand and the wood. Maybe put a layer of rhino truck liner material on the part of the posts that are in the ground or dip the wood in melted lead or aluminum if it doesn't burn the wood.

Beautiful palapa, Bill! After seeing all the fantastic palapas in Mulege & Loreto, I always wanted one.. I've seen a few little casitas style hotels that are all palm, wood, and glass with ttile floors. The bar/restaraunt at La Jolla in
san Jose del Cabo is a favorite with patio and swimming pool!! I'm sure other Nomads have pictures of theirs. If I ever learn how to post pics I will post mypalapa living space---11ft walls with 16ft high ceiling---5m by 10. Muy Tropical! Tio

lookingandbuying - 6-18-2010 at 04:50 PM

Bill's is absolutely THE BEST palapa I have ever seen. Makes me want to come visit and hang with you!!!!:tumble:;D:?:

irenemm - 6-18-2010 at 05:02 PM

That is just BEAUTIFUL.
What a great set up. How does it hold up in a Hurricane? Did it all just blow off?
Do you have a sprinkler system in it? Or on top?
Looks awesome.
Very nice place.
Thanks for sharing your photos.

Hi Bill. About much would a set up like that cost?

fishabductor - 6-18-2010 at 05:15 PM

Bill,

What are the dimensions of that palapa? it is a beauty. I love palapa's, but I hate sleeping under them. My wife woke me up one night and asked me what was crawling in her hair. It was a 6" centipede. She felt it land on her, and it woke her up. After that we moved the bed outside under the stars..

My wife grew up on a ranch that was all palapa roofs, they hung tarps under the palapa so the scorpions, centipedes and snakes fell on the tarp and slid away from the bed and not in it.

I know you can fumigate, but then you are introducing Poision into your home. I for one don't want my 4 month old son exposed to that.

I plan on having a palapa, but it won't be part of the living space.

However, that is one nice palapa...

You must sleep in that trailer...I just noticed it.

Our palapa survived hurricane Fausto and every hurricane since.

fishabductor - 6-18-2010 at 05:20 PM

What palapa are you referring to Elskel?

elskel - 6-18-2010 at 05:25 PM

I am trying to post, having trouble.

fishabductor - 6-18-2010 at 05:39 PM

Take the size down to under 50kb...I had the same problem.

torch - 6-18-2010 at 06:13 PM

The biggest palapa I've seen is the entry at Palmas de cortez.
Bill, that is a beauty

bill erhardt - 6-18-2010 at 06:28 PM

Irene.....Thanks. The storm ruffled its feathers a bit, but there was no significant damage. I don't have a sprinkler system, but that would be a good idea.

drzura.....I don't know what the market value would be. The trick would be to find one. I traveled up and down the peninsula for a year and a half after I retired before I found this one.

fishabductor.....The palapa is 40' x 60'. No problem with centipedes or scorpions. The windows all around open and have no screens, so mosquitoes come in if they're around. I do have screens on the trailer and sleep in it. I've never fumigated the palapa.

torch - 6-18-2010 at 06:55 PM

I didnt even see the trailer. NICE

Pescadero Palapa -

elskel - 6-25-2010 at 09:57 PM

Pescadero palapa completed last month. It is 21' between the posts and the cost was $2,300. I highly reccomend the local builder.

Holy doubles....elskel

Nonetheless...nice palapa....However I wouldn't go reccommending him until the palapa has weathered a hurricane or 2. That is when you know the guy is a good palapa builder.

they all look pretty until a huricane comes along...at that point you'll know if its a quality job.

$2300 is a smokin deal. Is that including all materials and labor? how many cajas of palm leaves did it require?

tiotomasbcs - 6-26-2010 at 12:40 AM

I heard of a Palapero named Kanacho that does good work?!:tumble:Especially if you pay him up front!:fire::fire Verdad, RT!!

Santispac Palapa - Not mine.

Well, we followed the blueprint exactly..but this doesn't look quite right...

Howard - 6-26-2010 at 05:26 AM

Senor Guillermo:

Wow, what a Palapa! I have a lot in Loreto that I will have a need for a Palapa. Can you recommend the person who built yours?

The lot is located in “Gringo Gulch” and the Palapa will be much smaller than yours, something to accommodate a 30-40 foot 5th wheel.

Also in need of cement slab built for the trailer, somewhere around 6 meters X 15 meters. Do you know someone that you can recommend for that job? The person I have been using for building jobs seems like he is getting a little complacent with us and might be starting to take advantage of us price wise.

Thank you

elskel - 6-26-2010 at 09:01 AM

Yes, Materials and labor. Not sure how many cajas. We will see one year how it holds up in a hurricane. The gentleman has been building his whole life, but time will tell. As you know it is an art building a palapa, I have had a few built over the years and this looks solid.

elskel - 6-26-2010 at 09:05 AM

Tomas, I stayed away from kanacho.

Pompano - 6-26-2010 at 09:21 AM

Our first palapa roof. Posada hill house built with 20" stone walls 1975-76.

The second owner gave it a metal roof. For good reason. You had to put your coaster 'on top' of your c-cktail glass to keep the bugs and debris from falling in.

Cost of the grass roof back then...very, very little...but still cut into the beer budget.
