Conditions in Baja now?

bajarah - 6-28-2010 at 03:39 PM

Hello again!

My wife owns a fourplex apartment setup in Ensenada .. about 3 blocks from the McDonald's on Reforma, near the Limon shopping mall.

Until lately, this was to be our place to retire to ( or another house in Ensenada near Cicese ) .. however, we are concerned with the vilence we see and read about in the news.

Our daughter in law , in Ensenada, has had a sister murdered about a year and a half ago there ..

You didn't mention the circumstances of your DiL's death. Was it a random killing?

Bajahowodd - 6-28-2010 at 03:50 PM

Welcome to the forum. There are quite a few nomads that live in and around Ensenada. I'm sure they will give you their best assessment. As a frequent visitor, my personal feeling is that crime in and around Ensenada is not something that should be a deal-breaker as far as deciding to live there. Any city, anywhere in the world will have a certain level of crime. For the most part, Ensenada has avoided the widely reported bloodshed associated with the drug cartel v. government war. It's nothing like Tijuana or Juarez. Not close.

bajarah - 6-28-2010 at 03:52 PM

No .. she was killed intentionally .. It was in the local papers there ...

What were the circumstances of the "intentional" killing, must have some logic behind this.

bajarah - 6-28-2010 at 04:05 PM

According to Ensenada PD and others, she was killed by persons she knew ... perhaps a jealousy thing ... cant go into more detail in case investigation is still pending ... PD say they know who the perpetrators are .. not sure why they havent acted yet though

BajaBlanca - 6-28-2010 at 04:16 PM

hmmmmm maybe take an extended vacation and sus it out first..... hard call ..... every city is dangerous to an extent .... we even had a crime here, a serious murder attempt on a camper on the beach and we still dont know what really happened :(

we live in one of the most remote areas of southern Baja. we feel safe and love it here but, like I said, even our area got hit once.:no:

KAT54 - 6-28-2010 at 04:52 PM

Well then I believe you have your answer... The same type killings occur all over the world not just here.... It quite obviously was not related to anything happening with the cartels nor a random act of violence....

KASHEYDOG - 6-28-2010 at 05:18 PM

Thank you "NOPROBLEMO2" you're exactly right. So let's get on a positive note, cause I just this afternoon got back from the La Fonda Hotel south of Rosarito Beach. Had a wonderful Sunday brunch for $13 yesterday with all the margatitas and bloody marys we wanted. Didn't see any violence. Mostly cute school kids in their uniforms going to school as usual and parents going to work as usual. No line at the sentri lane @ 9 AM. On second thought all you scardy cats stay under the couch and hide. I'm havin' a great time without you. :P

There is much more of a police/army presence in Ensenada and environs than in the past, which I don't particularly mind. My biggest complaint is the worsening traffic. Northbound south of town this past Saturday was the pits. Didn't detract, however, from my always happy Tacos Los Poblanos experience.

noproblemo2 - 6-28-2010 at 05:53 PM

Next time try the brunch at Cantiles, $5.95 all you can eat, $2.00 Mimosas, $1.75 Bloody Marys..... Great deal and Isaah is the wonderful owner

bajaguy - 6-28-2010 at 09:18 PM

bajarah ....we have our retirement place in Ensenada. Looked at several locations and settled on Ensenada for a variety of reasons.

You will like it, plenty of things to do like the upcoming two week Ensenada Wine Festival.

Maybe we can get together for a cold one (or two)

fishabductor - 6-28-2010 at 09:57 PM

bajaguy...

"We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would do us harm........George Orwell"

Isn't this a quote by Winston Churchill?

Sorry to Hijack...but I always liked the quote

motoged - 6-28-2010 at 10:11 PM

Wikipedia sez:

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

* Alternative: "We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us."
* In his 1945 "Notes on Nationalism", Orwell claimed that the statement, "Those who ‘abjure’ violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf" was a "grossly obvious" fact. "Notes on Nationalism"
* Notes: allegedly said by George Orwell although there is no evidence that Orwell ever wrote or uttered either of these versions of this idea. They do bear some similarity to comments made in an essay that Orwell wrote on Rudyard Kipling, when quoting from one of his poems. Orwell did write, in his essay on Kipling, that the latter's "grasp of function, of who protects whom, is very sound. He sees clearly that men can only be highly civilized while other men, inevitably less civilized, are there to guard and feed them." (1942)
o "Yes, making mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep" - Rudyard Kipling (Tommy)
o "I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it." - Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men)
* Alternative: "We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." - Winston Churchill (miscellaneous quotation, no date)

It's impossible for anyone, who has never encountered it, to totally comprehend the emotions associated with the loss of a loved one that is the victim of either random or unforeseeable violence. However, if you, bajarah, seriously want advice on whether to consider Ensenada as a choice for retirement, the simple truth is that you must keep that tragedy out of the equation. On the other hand, if that awful incident weighs heavily on you, then clearly Ensenada is not an option for you.
