Your Baja Cravings

Gypsy Jan - 7-29-2010 at 06:27 PM

Just for fun and this is simply off the top of my so-called mind:

The churros sold by the vendors in the border. Hot, fresh, delicious. Cheap, too.

The c-ckteles at Mariscos Alegria in Primo Tapia. She serves only the best and fresh pata de mula, callo, oysters, shrimp, clam.. She also makes a mean caldo de marisco and cahuamanta.

The carnitas at Carnitas los Panchos, Rosarito.

The sublime fish tacos at JR Tacos, Rosarito. Fish tacos, shrimp tacos, aguachile...the bestest.

Eli - 7-29-2010 at 06:36 PM

It's a toss up between the hamburger or the fish tacos at El Viejo in Los Barriles. I would hope I have the good sense to order the fish tacos which are mighty fine, but dang that burger is yummy, well, it has been a long time since I got to eat one.

grace59 - 7-29-2010 at 06:53 PM

What I love to eat in Baja...Fish tacos. The Chilaquiles at Playa Azul in the ejido outside San Felipe and Pineapple/coconut ice cream! Plus a nice icy cold Tecate (but not with the ice cream)!

Mexicorn - 7-29-2010 at 06:53 PM

Jan you're the best! I agree with your taco selection but they put too much (Pasta) batter on the tacos at tacos Los Cabos!

Udo - 7-29-2010 at 06:53 PM

The oysters in San Quintin

Ken Bondy - 7-29-2010 at 07:17 PM

Jan do these have to be just taste cravings or could they involve the other four senses?

noproblemo2 - 7-29-2010 at 07:20 PM

Chili Rellenos at Splash when Chef Gapo is making them YUMMY

Marc - 7-29-2010 at 07:25 PM

The fish tacos at the across from the old super mercado building in Loreto. I've been going there for years but I can't remember the name. A while back I took some midwest friends there. I had to twist their arms to try a fish taco ("they must taste fishy"). I bet them they could not eat just one. I won the bet. They ended up stuffing themselves.

The shark taco stand in G Negro is primo.

The other four senses

Gypsy Jan - 7-29-2010 at 07:32 PM

Ken, if you ask me, I will answer.

Oggie - 7-29-2010 at 07:34 PM

The Chilaquiles Verde con pollo y heuvos and extra onions at Mision San Isabel in San Quintin.

Jan.......what about Carnitas la Flor de Michoacan in Rosarito??????

BillP - 7-29-2010 at 07:48 PM

Sitting under a Chivato palapa eating 1 hour old dorado(or any other fish) on the grill, washed down with ice cold pacificos.

knuckles - 7-29-2010 at 08:14 PM

There are just too many to choose from. Birria Alex for breakfast?

Carnitas la Flor de Michacan

Gypsy Jan - 7-29-2010 at 08:18 PM

I love this place; good family operation and always, always great food.

Established in 1952 (my birth year, but please, please, don't mention this.)

Mexicorn - 7-29-2010 at 08:20 PM

How about that Poblano at La cazuela? Y Mixote?

Las Cazuelas de Mole?

Gypsy Jan - 7-29-2010 at 09:19 PM

Yeahh, I think that they are good and I really like the mixiote.

The pipian (green mole) is OK, but the dark mole is disappointing (bitter).

The margaritias are killer.

That's El Rey del Taco-- great place!

But right now I could go for Enmoladas at Los Mandiles in Loreto-- 2 with chicken, 1 with platano. Ssssssssoooooooooo GOOD!

All good, but how about those little coconut pineapple tamales. Swaaeeeeet!

Sallysouth - 7-29-2010 at 11:05 PM

Yes, El Rey is the best!So fresh, but what is Enmoladas?Something rolled in something...?And coconut pina tomales??What have I been missing?:?:

Mexicorn - 7-30-2010 at 06:47 AM

As much as I love "Mariscos Bahia" in Ensenada prices have recently gone up!
It's still a bargin compared to US prices. Nothing beats those camarooonies ranchereos and a cold dos ecky's.
Just my two pesos of bar stool knowledge....

shari - 7-30-2010 at 07:16 AM

Lions Paw scallops (Mano de Leon) in Guerrero Negro...las cazuelas or Don Gus...nothing like them anywhere!!! and Juan's abalone medalions in mojo de ajo....ummmmm.

this from our kitchen

Sally, an enmolada is an enchillada, but the sauce is mole rather than red or green chile sauce.

And I would love to try coconut piņa tamales!

BajaBlanca - 7-30-2010 at 07:44 AM

fresh fish or lobster (and he usually serves both at the same time) a la Joaquin at Cactus restaurant in La Bocana. NO other like it in the world.

Ken Bondy - 7-30-2010 at 08:58 AM

Cravings from the other four senses:

The sights and smells of Tijuana.

The first sight of the Sea of Cortez climbing southbound out of Mexicali.

The view on short final at Punta San Francisquito (either direction).

Mountain smells, trees, horses, earth, at Meling Ranch.

The feel of the sand on the beach at Punta Pescadero.

Schooling hammerhead sharks at El Bajo in La Paz Bay.

First view of the seafood combination at Cesar's in Loreto (RIP). This eventually involves the fifth sense.

Sunrise at Punta San Francisquito.

Seeing, feeling, hearing the gray whales in Laguna San Ignacio.

David K - 7-30-2010 at 09:16 AM

For me, one is finding historic sites and walking the same route as people did hundreds of years ago.

There is just so much to do and experience in Baja!

Heather - 7-30-2010 at 09:25 AM

On our recent trip to Cabo San Lucas, one of my nieces had to stay home and work, but sent a list of must-haves for her little sister to be sure and eat!

Tortilla soup at Pollo de Oro, I like the roasted chicken and the potato salad myself.

Papas at Paisas Tacos.

Sopes from the sope ladies up in our 4 de Marzo barrio.

She also had to bring home the Potato chips ondulados with chili cheese (guess they don't sell them in San Diego).

What I enjoyed best on this trip was all the Marlin that everyone cooked when we went to visit: Machaca de Marlin with homemade flour tortillas, smoked marlin quesadillas, and marlin en papel aluminio on the barbq!

Little niece, that doesn't eat fish...enjoyed it as well!

La Cazuela de Mole in Rosarito, they server those sweet tamales for desert with all the meals. Just a little extra something that is special. Just across from the police station.

I second that....my favorite food stop, only 2 weeks from today!

Marc - 7-31-2010 at 07:27 AM

How about scallops at BOLA right out of the water with a fresh lime?

acadist - 7-31-2010 at 12:46 PM

Another is the scraps of tuna as you filet.....melts on your tongue like butter

windgrrl - 7-31-2010 at 03:34 PM

The people, the food, the geography, the culture, the creativity, the wildness, but mostly the ocean and especially where the edge of the water bubbles over the sand and bioluminescent things spark in the night. When I get there, the first thing I do is put my feet in the water and feel the soda water-like sensation of being near the water again. And, yes, fresh churros from the street vendor is right up there!

I'll vote for that, too. But, if memory is correct, I thought I also had them at Malarrimo. No?

805gregg - 7-31-2010 at 05:15 PM

Carnitas at Las Flores de Michoican, in Rosarito, been going there since 1963. IWe usually eat our fill and buy a kilo for the road.

acadist - 7-31-2010 at 06:34 PM

Mallirimo is usually where I have them, cooked in butter and garlic YUM:tumble:

Bob H - 7-31-2010 at 06:44 PM

Oh...... Almejas al Carbon at c-cktieleria Mazatlan in Ensenada!
To die for.

Udo - 7-31-2010 at 07:38 PM

We'll be in Ensenada next weekend, Bob. Will try the c-ckteleria Mazatlan.
Can you give me a hint on where they are?
Those clams and oysters look yummy!

bajabass - 8-1-2010 at 06:45 AM

I crave tacos at Taqueria Traileros in El Sauzal, and my wife, who is waiting for me in La Paz!!!

Heading in to Ensenada, after passing El Sauzal, you take the split off to the left (not going straight toward the port). You will pass a VW dealership on your right, a Pemex on your left, and a 2nd Pemex on your right. You will see c-ckteleria Mazatlan on your right, directly across the street from the bus depot. You can park in their small lot on the side, or on the street. We usually like to get there around 1:30 and stay for a couple of hours. Order a cubeta of Pacifico's (6 for the price of 5).

Udo - 8-1-2010 at 07:16 AM

Thanks for the directions, Bob.
By split off the left, you mean the "Y" by the non-working clock. There is a sign there that directs you to San Quintin.
That's the road that bypasses the harbor area.

bajaguy - 8-1-2010 at 07:24 AM

Udo..........It is located at 10th and Miramar.........if you are headed into town, it will be on your right, just past the intersection of Miramar

........took me about 10 minutes to find it the first time.

[Edited on 8-1-2010 by bajaguy]

dtutko1 - 8-1-2010 at 07:32 AM

When you're driving south and you go over the hill just north of Santispac and see the blue waters of bahia conception for the first time.

dtutko1 - 8-1-2010 at 07:36 AM

The stuffed shrimp or calamari at Reys. Carnitas at Barajas. Lanching a tin boat at los Cerritos and landing a dorado or two and getting them on a grill asap.

Yes, and there is nice car wash right next door too. Sometimes I'll have them clean my truck up while I'm feasting there. We usually spend at least two hours, so arrive hungry!

Udo - 8-1-2010 at 08:13 AM

We definitely will be hungry!
No plans for breakfast when we leave the house.
We'll be staying at Taormina's B&B and I'll be guest chef. Friday night we are attending the opening night bash at Venidimia.
Love to spend some time with you, Terry, if you come to the wine festivities.
If not, I'll see you at the chili cook-off a couple of weeks later.

bajaguy - 8-1-2010 at 08:15 AM

We will be down the afternoon of the 12th, headed back north the morning of the 22nd. Will be attending four wine events and the chili cookoff.

Do you have a baja phone????

David, the sign has changed and it's larger. The spelling on the new sign is a little different, probably new ownership. However, the clams were the best I'vd had there in a long time. Absolutely outstanding. This was taken mid July 2010

And very sweet garlic juices all around it! All of the fixings are put back into the pismo clam shell and they are cooked on a barbeque. Man, now my mouth is watering.

Relax, appears your photo is just a tad dated as of mid July 2010 so a fairly recent change...

Udo - 8-1-2010 at 01:36 PM

IMHO you had a better photo, David. Plus the storefront looked more upscale, compared to Bob's photos.
If Bob wouldn't have posted his photos, I would have gone looking for the sign you posted.
Either way...I'm there next Friday!

I'll take some more photos and post those along with another restaurant (and bar) review.

Natalie Ann - 8-1-2010 at 03:55 PM

My Baja cravings include
fresh mango plucked from the tree each morning
the feel of a whale pushing up beneath my hand
the music and special foods in La Paz during Carnival
and most of all I crave the colors and smells of the Sea of Cortez
