Deposito turned Bistro in Asuncion!

shari - 7-30-2010 at 08:39 AM

The last few months have been a flurry of activity for Sirenita & Adrian as they are not only growing a baby but creating a new culinary venture called the Tide Pool bistro located in Campo Sirena at the beach in Asuncion.

With alot of help from friends, we turned an old Corona deposito into a cool little food stand. Adrian is a fantastic cook and Sirena's pies and pizzas are awesome. They use wholesome fresh ingredients and will be open all day long for fresh seafood like fish tacos, sushi, sashimi, abalone & caracol burgers and they will cook your catch how you like it too as well as prepare lunches for fishing and daily specials...fresh squeezed juices and of course pizzas.

Over the last couple weeks, we've had several practise inaugurations and looks like this will be a great little hangout! I may never cook again!!!

Here is Bajafam at last night's bacon wrapped gourmet hot dog night. We will be putting the finishing touches on the place this week...plants, beachcombed stuff etc. I wish the kids the best of luck in their new business.

That is soooo cool - wishing them a lot of success. Good food with a smile and the BA background is a sure winner...

SiReNiTa - 7-30-2010 at 10:56 AM

Weeeeee!!!
Well this is exciting to say the least! I'm glad everyone has liked our treats so far, I think that the thing that makes the whole experience, is the fact that both Adrian and I enjoy making the food as well as hanging out with everyone and seeing big happy smiles (or psycho smiles as depicted above :biggrin: ) from start to finish.

It's been a roller coaster ride for us but we are grateful for every single minute of it so far and we very much look forward to having more and more guests!!!

Thanks to Bajafam for braving the taste tests and for the lovely photos!!!

David K - 7-30-2010 at 06:05 PM

That looks great!

Good luck on the venture... get more bar stools, I want to go back to Asuncion!

I still remember the yellowtail that Shari sliced up and served just an hour after the fish was caught!

July, 2007:

Juan catches it.

Shari cuts it up.

David enjoys it!

norte - 7-30-2010 at 06:24 PM

OK. At the risk of getting my head chopped off.... I remember the call for donations to help thee young lady go to the University. I am assuming that the University was not completed and directions have changed?

David K - 7-30-2010 at 06:26 PM

Making a new life is a far greater task, and it seems that Asuncion has everything needed for this new family to be happy and have a fine life. Good luck to them!

Udo - 7-30-2010 at 06:42 PM

I'm looking forward to being a guest chef.

I'll bring my sashimi knife.

True so sorry.... but starting a new life with only a "bistro stand" in Ascuncion makes it double tough. Good luck Kids

shari - 7-30-2010 at 08:15 PM

sirenita plans to finish her degree...life threw her a curve ball and so she's just on time out at the moment and the Bistro is a way for them to support themselves...I'm glad to have her home and certain she will follow the right path to happiness.

David K - 7-31-2010 at 09:20 AM

Good to hear Shari!

Norte, you are so right!

Nan & D, good question... Shari/ Sirenita: Do you sell beer (anything other than Corona, I hope... ie. Pacifico, XX, Tecate)?

KAT54 - 7-31-2010 at 09:30 AM

Do you think there is enough people in town to support this?
Am I the only one to see that this is a wood shack
and not a proper bistro?
Sanitary conditions?
Should not this boy go north and get a real chef job?
He does look qualified.
What are you thinking?
Guide these children down the correct path.
The several visitors you have each year will not support them.
Do not most businesses go broke in a year?

People must live in highly impacted urban cities?
Workers must be employed by global corporations?
Independent workers are an insult to the empire?
Food must be burned, boiled or microwaved?
Kat54 is a pathetic corporate shill of the imperialists?

Iflyfish - 7-31-2010 at 09:53 AM

KAT54

How do I become like you? I really want to learn how to be understanding and supportive of young people who are setting out on their lives. I really want to learn how to support self sufficiency, creativity and entrepreneurial endeavors. Can you tell me how I can be a better parent? I appreciate your stunning, just stunning wisdom. In fact I am jaw dropped by it.

Sunman - 7-31-2010 at 10:31 AM

Dayum! Looking good, bummed we couldn't fit in a stop to Asuncion this time, would loved to have sampled some of those goods!

mulegemichael - 8-1-2010 at 08:11 AM

hey guys; we'll be your neighbors for a few days in nov. and will utilize your talents, for sure...SO looking forward to getting over there

SiReNiTa - 8-1-2010 at 09:14 AM

Well...I feel that since norte was so polite with his question, it deserves an answer from me...

This is not a complete change of plans, I am not one to give up that easy and I will complete my degree. It is, how ever, a slight delay and a brand new set of doors that lay waiting to be opened.

Sometimes life changes in such drastic ways that all we can do is take what ever comes our way with gratitude and an open heart and mind, because even our mistakes and bad moments make us grow as people.

That said, I really hope to see everyone here at one time or another and share this new part of our lives with you all, not only the bistro but also the soon to come bundle of joy.

Thanks for all the great comments and good wishes, as I've said before a little prayer and good vibes go a long way. ;)

As for the beer issue, we do not have an alcohol permit yet, sooooo....you won't be able to buy beer at the tidepool. But you are welcome to bring your cerveza while enjoying a bite to eat!!

And Kat...my dearest kat...

Yes.

"Am I the only one to see that this is a wood shack
and not a proper bistro?"
Definition of Bistro:
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural bistros
Etymology: French
Date: 1921
1 : a small or unpretentious restaurant
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bistro

Agree to disagree :)

"Sanitary conditions?"
Our sanitary conditions are just fine, both Adrian and I work hard to keep the cooking and eating environment clean, and to be honest, I've seen much worse sanitary conditions in well established restaurants.

"Should not this boy go north and get a real chef job? "
He does look qualified. That was an option, but is it really worth it to make a few extra pesos and to be far away from his family? We are both excited and in my opinion (and it seems as though in many other peoples mind as well), we are capable of making this work, as Bajafam said "a little heart goes a long way"...and it's not our fault that you can not see that.

"What are you thinking?"
We are thinking of our future, we already know it's not going to be a piece of cake, but then what in this life that is worth the time of day is? We would not be doing this if we didn't think it would work. All we ask is to be given the benefit of the doubt, who knows what could happen down the road, after all T.I.M. right??

"Guide these children down the correct path. "
Each one of us has a very personal definition of the "correct path", but in reality, there is no one and only path that everyone must take, our paths are simply trails that we make for ourselves as life goes on and it's our personal decision which one we take.

"The several visitors you have each year will not support them.
Do not most businesses go broke in a year? "
That is something that remains to be seen, and even if this option does not work, at least no one would be able to say we did not do our best and tried...after all that's all that can be asked of anyone.

Udo - 8-1-2010 at 09:27 AM

Well said SiReNiTa!

David K - 8-1-2010 at 09:39 AM

Yup... good job Sirena!

bajamedic - 8-1-2010 at 10:02 AM

Sirena, it warms my heart to know that there are still people like you in this world. JH

norte - 8-1-2010 at 10:03 AM

YUP..

good luck. The road you have chosen is a hard one.

One lesson here. Put your life on display (especially the internet) and expect some scrutiny.

Again. Good Luck

mulegemichael - 8-1-2010 at 10:08 AM

trust me sirena, you don't have to qualify your life to kat...he's a jerk and the whole world knows it.

capt. mike - 8-1-2010 at 10:35 AM

killer pizza!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael when you going?? maybe i can go too.
yummmmmmmm

i eat off dog taco stands all the time and never got sick.

SiReNiTa - 8-1-2010 at 10:36 AM

Thanks davidK, Udo and Bajamedic!

Norte, I've come to accept scrutiny and it does not bother me because even if it's not pleasant, it makes me a stronger person day by day. Thank you for your good wishes!!

I enjoy sharing our lives with many people from this forum and I know very well that there are a few "trolls" that will always have something unpleasant to say, but the good outweighs the bad in many many ways...I'm glad to say that putting up with a few snide remarks here and there is a small price to pay!

Mulegemichael...all I can say is    I'd say you are TOO right but I was taught that if I have nothing nice to say not to say it at all...;););)

Iflyfish - 8-1-2010 at 11:17 AM

SiReNiTa

Very well said!

There are many ways to live life and the secret to doing it well is to do each day well.

You live in a place that most of us have to travel a very long way to get to. You live in a vacation spot in a village of wonderful people who know and love you. You are generative, creative and clearly you and Adrian know how to cook. You will do well.

On my first trips to Baja the very best meals I had were in plywood "restaurants" and in people's homes. These are some of the very best meals I have had in my life. You can tell when a chef loves their food and you can see that love in Adrian's dishes. Mexico is world famous for it's quisine.

Have you ever seen Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations? He is a world famous chef who travels the world eating at places just like your bistro. He eschews the fancy restaurants to eat what the locals eat. Local restaurants have to produce quality food or their competition will eat their lunch. I have had better food at your mother's than I have eaten at some 5 star restaurants I have eaten at. Do what you do with love and care and you will succeed beyond your dreams.

Serving others is one of life's great pleasures and having a restaurant is one of those ways of serving others. It is a great pleasure to serve fine food and see the faces of guests enjoying themselves. This is one of the reasons that we host dinners and social gatherings. It is a pleasure to give pleasure.

By the way, some of the plywood restaurants I first ate at in Baja are now major restaurants. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step the old Chines proverb goes.

Abalone burger!!! Home made Pizza! Fresh Sushi!! I recall the sushi you and your mother made from the yellowtail I caught and we ate it in our motor home, cause I was so sick! Next time I will have the pleasure of eating it at your bistro! Live is good and it gets better!

Lauriboats - 8-1-2010 at 03:03 PM

Best of luck to you both, we are looking forward to eating at the Tide Pool and we will be bringing all of our Asuncion visitors over for a try also. The place looks great and food looks wonderful. Job well done!!!!!

Natalie Ann - 8-1-2010 at 04:12 PM

The path each of us is on right now is exactly the right path for right now. Paths flow and curve, fork and change. If each of us consciously follows our own paths, we will likely have adventurous learning experience.:smug:

My congratulations and best wishes to you, Sirena and Adrian, on your new bistro business endeavor. Food cooked with talent, love and good cheer, eaten by the ocean with cerveza of my choice.... sounds like an excellent day to me.

Positive Vibrations!:bounce:When people broke thru in the Sixties everyone was criticized but look at the Movement now. New thots and Frank Zappa. In the long run a Restaurant may not be... but for the moment, let's go for it!! It's great Baja still has remote areas where fish tacos, Peace and Love still command attention!!:O:O I'm happy to think that Serenita and her Ol Man have larger visions---Environmental, maybe!! Peace Tio

gnukid - 8-1-2010 at 05:33 PM

Don't we plan most of daily actions around food, we plan trips to restaurants, we plan to visit someplace especially for the food. Sometimes we go to special places for the food and hospitality because we'll see other like minded people too, until one day the place is so packed you'll wait in lines down the street for their food and plan your yearly job/vacations around them just to stop in! Ahhh, does Adrian have a wine list?

zforbes - 8-1-2010 at 05:38 PM

The wine list is in the developing stages. Chris the plant guy has initiated Wine-O-Wednesdays so we can decide what we like with Tide Pool pizza and sushi, not to mention the fun of getting together around a few good bottles with friends. Suggestions?

gnukid - 8-1-2010 at 06:14 PM

Could this be better, patrons are invited to tour the Californias stopping at restaurants such as French Laundry in Mill Valley, L'Auberge Carmel and over a thousand miles of wine tours of gastronomical exploration, culminating in a grand wine exchange and fine wine tasting, sensory adventure and fun en el Bistro Asuncion accompanied by Hors d'œuvres de la casa con sabor cinco estrella.

Serenita & Adrian,
Life's road can be full of many lumps, bumps and curves that many of us have had to endure. I for one know this first hand as well and can tell you with your loving family and friends you will prevail and come through this winding road just fine. There will be good times, difficult times, fun times and times of struggle but with your positive look on life you will make it as many of us have.
Don't let the nay sayers bring your journey down, you will make it and wish you two the best that life can bring to you. Just play the hand that has been dealt and make the best of it, time goes by so quickly and before too long you will be looking back to this very special time and sharing it with others. Good luck to you and Adrian and soon to arrive...........:bounce:

I'm looking forward to pulling up a chair and enjoying The Tide Pool's fare. Sometime this fall...

and, Sirena, I am impressed by the way you handled Kat's post. Your patience, thoughtfulness and kindness will take you far.

Can't wait to get there! Auntie Shelley says she wants to help and will share some of her culinary expertise with you and Adrian, although from what I've heard so far you most likely won't need it!!!
