How far down is HWY 5 now? It was at El Huerfanito in June and they seem to be building the highway at a pretty rapid pace. Anyone been down to check progress?

I did a pretty complete report on Hwy. 5 south from Puertecitos about 20 days ago: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=46887

Photos, road log, times... (pavement still ends at El Huerfanito)

According to "The Net" website the road is a horror around the area of the Easter Day earthquake. Around the Ensenada turnoff military check point things ain't much better, but some parts of the new 4 lane are now open in that area.:bounce:

The OP's question was how far has the new highway progressed south... I didn't mention the roadbuilding south of Mexicali because of that... Since you did, yes... they are rebuilding, maybe widening the highway between La Puerta and Rio Hardy (about 6 miles) and it is a dirt detour along side... one time it was super dusty and the next, not so bad.
Near the Hwy. 3 jcn. there are a couple more miles of dirt detours where they are widening the road.
