Loreto Fishing Report

wakemall - 8-16-2010 at 05:03 PM

I will be in Loreto on Sept 3rd. Any new updates on the Dorado other than Pam's site?

Thanks

Pescador - 8-16-2010 at 07:59 PM

Western Outdoor News is doing a weekly report and usually includes Loreto. go to www.wonews.com

wakemall - 8-17-2010 at 08:12 PM

The folks in Loreto have GOT to have better fishing reports. My boat is still broken and will be going out on a friends panga.

What do I have to do to get a response? Slam Obama????

kaybaj - 8-17-2010 at 08:19 PM

yup, it's his fault they ain't no reports!

If you have a friend in Loreto with a panga, I have an idea that he/she has already given you a report and you are seeking encouragement elsewhere.
Fishermen tend to be more vocal with reports if they have good fishing to report than bad. And you're not going to get any good reports from Loreto because the fishing this year for pelagics has been, and is, lousy. It is not only dorado that are few and small when you find them, but billfish as well. Friends who have spent summers in Loreto for years fishing for marlin told me a couple of days ago that they have caught a grand total of two this year.
The only ray of hope this year is in the form of jacks, yellowtail and roosterfish, in particular.
So, if you don't want to refocus on your September trip you may well go home with empty coolers.
You might not like it, we don't, but here is your Loreto fishing report.
You are forewarned.

Russ - 8-18-2010 at 08:36 AM

What Bill says works up here too. You may get an individual that has a good day but that doesn't mean it's wide open. I saw some lights over the horizon this morning but no commercial boats for about 3 weeks now. And they were in & out. That has got to tell you something.
"What do I have to do to get a response? Slam Obama???? "
If you like. But I'm pretty sure those of us living down here could care less and there is "Off Topic" forum for that.

that pretty much sounds like what I reported, not much change, more dorado but small (20 pounds looks like a big one to us now), a few marlin, no sails, and now yellowtail are difficult if there are clouds covering up our coord markers (storm clouds that form due to heat) its hot as hell outside right now.

shari - 8-18-2010 at 02:01 PM

thanks for the reports Bill, Russ & Pam...I was wondering how it was going over there. Much the same here....water is still cold but the last 2 days show promise as we've had nice summer weather and the warm water is pushing up to us now. There have been large manchas of sardines on shore finally so things should liven up here this week.

There are some yellowtail in the kelp paddies but easier to spear than catch on with a rod. Lots of nice calico being caught and sheepshead, some grouper but not many YT close yet...there were some nice fish, 20-40 lbs caught in the Tournament but 30 miles north of here...north of san pablo. but I remain optimistic as our season is only a couple weeks late so far...we had such an amazingly long summer fishing season last year from aug-february!!

Here is one of our guests nice sheepshead and calico he caught last week fishing in his tin boat by san roque island. Of course bajafamgirl Erin was in there checking it out!!

shari - 8-18-2010 at 02:03 PM

oh crap...should I have posted this in a new thread???

sorry if it seemed like a highjack...I just thought some of you might be interested in a pacific midcoast report...misery loves company right??

For us, it's hot as hades here..which means the high 80's!!!

flyfishinPam - 8-18-2010 at 06:42 PM

thanks for your report from the other side. pretty different from your reports from last year as I recall your fishing sounded really great in late summer and fall of last year.

wakemall - 8-18-2010 at 07:38 PM

Thank you to all that responded. I thought the higher surface temps had affected the water temps and temp breaks. Obviously it did not. Where are the weeds and garbage on the current lines?
WOW… Rough Dodo season.
We actually caught five Dorado right after the Vags tournament (missed another three). It was way out. I mean way out past Punta Lobo. We could actually see Isla de Catalon and were past that. Saw numerous small jumping Yellow Fin and several big Yellow Fin belly rolling. Tons of bait in the water.
There was a beautiful 29 foot boat out with us with twin Honda’s that was also catching fish. The Dorado were 20 to 30 pounds. All were blind strikes trolling feathers and covering ground. We actually got a double trolling towards Catalon.
Thanks again for all that posted a response. I will find the fish and post pictures and a response upon my return. Search and more searching. God willing with the weather.

Pompano - 8-18-2010 at 08:11 PM

Thanks for the update, wakemall. Bill tells it like it is..and you found out. A rough dorado season in Baja. Such a shame.

But ..maybe you should think PANAMA for your next trip south? Fishing is just short of unbelievable. A buddy of mine did a floating lodge trip there in May and he wrote that he had a ball catching everything that swims.

His floater was located in the Coiba Island area along Panama's northwest Pacific coast. Fished Hannibal Bank and Montuosa Island for black and blue Marlin, schools of big wahoo and giant yellowfiin. There are huge sailfish and lots of dorado. Also got good inshore action casting to snapper and roosterfish.

I am signed up for February, 2011. Would have gone earlier, but they were sold out.

Baja? Thank God I love it for more than just the fishing!

mulegemichael - 8-18-2010 at 09:20 PM

pomp...we're going to panama this winter too..and belize and costa rica too...a whirlwind fly fishing crazy trip for inshore and offshore stuff..can't wait

flyfishinPam - 8-19-2010 at 10:40 AM

give us trip reports for your panama trips please!

Pescador - 8-19-2010 at 01:36 PM

I can not say the dorado fishing has been spectacular except for a few days, but it has been pretty steady this year at Santa Rosalia. The billfish have been strong all season and I have had several days where I have had over 12 to 15 shots at billfish, mostly surface visuals. Yellowtail fishing continues to be very good, and we have had some pretty consistent days with Red Snapper and the like. Roosters showed up real strong early and we have had a pretty strong amount all season. So I think it has been a pretty exceptional year for us and while I consider the Dorado a little on the slow side, I am ok with that as they are really not my favorite fish to catch anyway.

wakemall - 8-19-2010 at 07:02 PM

Thanks again to all that responded. I guess it will give me more time to work on the house than fishing. Even more time to work on the POS boat. Kind of sad for the fishing buddy I am taking down... Especially with the ridiculous airfare prices. He and his wife have been to Loreto twice with me and the fishing has been very slow. I keep telling him how great the Dodo and bill fishing is! All I have to show is pictures.

I still have a very positive attitude and think I can find the fish..... It might be 60 miles out, but I am going to find them........... Just like looking for Albacore out of Morro Bay or Monterey.

Pictures to follow after Sept 10th.

Thanks again

wakemall - 8-26-2010 at 07:42 PM

My brother went to our house in Loreto today and Alaska/Horizon is now flying a prop job from LAX to LTO. He said the plane was half full and took an extra 30 to 40 minutes of travel time. The pilot had to make an aggressive approach and slammed the plane on the ground. No more CRJ's...

The locals think a huge storm is coming and have blocked the upper arroyo crossing because they are digging a trench to divert and slow the water. Hopefully to help not destroy the lower paved/concrete road and lights. I see nothing on the radar showing a local big storm. 30% chance of rain for the next five days is the highest.

They say the YT fishing has slowed way down and they are catching larger Dorado way out. They are also catching some Yellow Fin way out. Some are rather large. No size or weight yet. I will post that info when received.

More to follow.

Freespool - 8-27-2010 at 10:01 PM

Let me tell you that your brother is FOS. I was on the exact same plane today. What a marooon. The plane was late leaving LAX, that's why the flight was delayed. As for the flight, we came in from the south after taking an absolutely beautiful trip over Carmen Island and around Puerto Escondido.

Rough landing and slammed the plane to the ground? What a bunch of crap.......I sat right next to the wheel and the landing was smooth as silk (as was the rest of the flight). It's commando keyboarders like you and your brother that start stupid rumors like this.

Oh yeah, his fish report was off too. They caught a bunch of Dorado at Coronado island for the past 3 days.

Does your brother happen to be the idiot doctor on the flight?

BajaBruno - 8-27-2010 at 10:26 PM

Freespool, in two posts you have proven yourself to be someone who really doesn't belong on this board. I don't know where you do belong, but it isn't here.

Nomads, if I am out of line here, please correct me.

Cypress - 8-28-2010 at 04:47 AM

:) Strange. Sounds like they were on different flights.:?:

Freespool - 8-28-2010 at 12:20 PM

Bruno,
Yes, you are way out of line. I was on this flight and this guy either fabricated the entire story or is ignorant. Either way, he is totally off base.

For the record, you referred to my "other" post. Here it is for you:

In reference to a shooting I wrote:

"What a tragedy. I am so very sorry...senseless"

So, go back to having god talk to you........

landing approach

flyfishinPam - 8-28-2010 at 01:11 PM

I'm no pilot but I've sat in many small planes and we've done LTO many times. I think the plane is supposed to land and take off against the wind? Captain Mike help!

anyway what I am getting at, and let me clarify here that I have not flown into LTO since Nov 2009, but
I am hearing from a LOT of people that are flying in that the plane ALWAYS goes SOUTH of the landing strip to purposely fly over Ensenada Blanca. That is where the timeshares are being built.

is this an interesting sales technique? was this flight told to approach from the south and come in the wind direction of the wind? is there a connection here or is this a coincidence? honestly I don't know but maybe others that see nomad can put in here

on the turbo props

when I flew with my kids from Seattle to Reno Horizon used this same turbo prop with the high wing. it is a smaller plane than he horizon jet. i don't know these make and models for the planes. it would make sense for Horizon to fly the smaller planes now as this is traditionally one of the slowest (probably is) times of the year for tourism here, its been this way since forever due to the heat. so it would make sense for them to fly the smaller planes.

byt he way bright moon phase fishing is pretty slow some dorado in the channel though

Pompano - 8-28-2010 at 01:23 PM

Once flew from Loreto to mainland Mexico on Mexicana airlines. It was calm weather..ceiling unlimited...no wind shears.

The pilot (I use the term loosely) brought the jet down like a wounded goose. The plane lost altitude so fast it popped everyones' ears, causing a baby to scream bloody murder..then we slammed onto the tarmac...hard.

I really wanted to b-tchslap the pilot, but he stayed behind locked c-ckpit door until all passengers had departed and he was safe from harm.

Research done before the response to freekspoog

Text response from my brother in Loreto:
Whoever this buttcrack is tell him to kiss my ass. We landed straight in with no trip over the island. Landed from the north straight in. Haven't fished so don't know about that part. It's liberals like this person that allow Alaska Airlines to continue their price gouging.

I will not be as nice... Hey freakspoog, Let me know where you are in Loreto on Sept 3rd. FU and your keyboard BS comments. I will give you my Loreto address if you have the balls to show up.

Jeez, he must be psychic if he can determine political persuasion from those posts. Or maybe he thinks liberals have a monopoly on being a-holes.

Pescador - 8-29-2010 at 07:29 AM

This is a refreshing switch from The Turtle Trials of Bahia Concepcion. I wonder if we can run this little insignificant issue into at least 85 pages of how the plane really landed. Maybe someone will come up with YouTube video. Stay Tuned.

Bob and Susan - 8-29-2010 at 08:47 AM

capt. mike - 8-29-2010 at 09:48 AM

well i will say that:

99% of the time at LTO all landings are from the south for RW 36 because that happens to be the one the prevailing wind favors generally MOST of the time.

i have landed at LTO more than a few dozen times since 1980 and i can say the only times i have been given 16 is because the winds were negligible on the ground and the controller gave me the option. especially if i am coming from the north like from mulege and i want a straight in.

now - as for the bigger iron... they have to land 36 and do a full approach which takes them over the bay because the mountains to the north will not accomodate their 2.7 degree glide slope for a straight in to 16.
and - the winds usually favor 36 anyway.
so there - that's my story and i am sticking with it.:wow:

plus i can't wait to see the fight in person between wakemall and freespool!!! hahahaha. i'll come to LTO and bring Skeet!:!::coolup:

wakemall - 9-1-2010 at 07:39 PM

Hey BajaNomad friends,

Loreto fishing report as of today (I better be careful because I might offend someone or they might not like the report).

My brother left the big boat at home and took the pango to San Bruno. Roughly ten miles out from San Bruno there were numerous Marlin and Sails. They caught two Marlin and one Sail. I guess they hooked several others and lost them. They also caught small Dorado (12 pounds). I do not think they caught many Dorado. The panga is new and they had problems with the bait tank and lost the bait.

He is going to go 20 to 30 miles past Punta Lobo tomorrow to where we found the tuna a month ago. I will post his reply before I leave Friday morning.

More to follow....

mulegemichael - 9-1-2010 at 08:38 PM

oooohhh boy!

wakemall - 9-13-2010 at 07:01 PM

As my usual hard headed self, I decided against the comments of the locals. Went way out last Monday looking for Big Dorado, Marlin, SF, and YF (25 miles past Punta Lobo). Not listening to my Mexican Panga Captains and friends who told me the area was void of fish. They were right. Nada nothing. On the way in we hit the buoy off Punta Lobo and caught five 10 to 20 pound Dorado....

Fished Tuesday to Wednesday outside San Bruno. Almost to Punta Perico. We caught several small Dorado. No SF or Marlin.

We fished Punta CO on Thursday. 50 to 500 yards off shore there were thousands of small schooling Dorado. They hit everything thrown at them. All five to 12 pound fish.

The Horizon prop plane was really really nice. On the bad side, there were only 25 passengers on each Friday flight. Not good! The temperature was not really bad while we where there. Although it looked like it got hot after we left.

Thanks for the update.
I'm counting down the days till I'm back in good old LTO. :bounce:

And I just spoke to friends who went out yesterday and got several 25# dorado out past Punta Lobos. Yes!

wakemall - 9-14-2010 at 09:01 PM

How far past and did they go north or south?

Thanks

Skeet/Loreto - 9-15-2010 at 07:54 AM

Wakemail:

Did you ever go about 25 to 30 miles off of Carmen on an 030 Heading??
When you do reach the Reef out there you will be at a 90 Degree from Punta Pulpito/

It was always a Favortie of mine at this time of year.

Glad you had a good time.

They went due east and found a small line of seaweed......
trolled feathers and bingo!!

I'm guessing they were probably out at least 25 miles in the "blue water". I'll get more details later from the husband, he's out there again today. Buena suerte!
