BajaCactus, Baja Movie, Baja Meal, AUG. 22: "The Baja Cactus Cultural Fiesta"

David K - 7-27-2004 at 10:21 PM

This is the first announcement of a get together in Tijuana on Sunday August 22, 2004, that we discussed at the recent meeting at JR's.

BajaCactus (Antonio) would like to meet more Nomads and other Baja loving people. He will arrange a private theatre or other location to show the movie 'BAJO CALIFORNIA....' (update, a second Omnimax film on the Sea of Cortez as well), (update, a private guided tour of the Tijuana Cultural Center's Baja exhibit will be provided)...

Next, we have a special treat... Antonio has spoken with the famous PALMAZUL restaurant to have a room for us...

Meet BajaCactus, meet other Baja Nomads, see a great Baja movie, have a great Baja meal.

Antonio will provide details as they become known. We have just finished chatting this, and he asked me to to make the initial announcement. All Baja loving people are invited. The movie showing will be Antonio's treat and Palmazul's menu and cost will be posted by Antonio, soon.

With nearly 4 weeks notice, I hope that everyone who wants to join Antonio will be able to!

Thank you Antonio... this will be great!!!:yes::yes:

Great Day, wish I could come

academicanarchist - 7-28-2004 at 07:43 AM

David. Sounds like a really great day, and I would really love to meet Antonio and other wild and crazy people who post on the board, but since I am heading to Argentina in September I won't be able to make this one. I am still planning to come to Baja California in October, and perhaps I could get together with you, Antonio, and some of the gang then. I am off today for a short trip and long drive, and will be back on the 1st or 2nd of August.

marla - 7-28-2004 at 09:29 AM

Sounds terrific I will be there if at all possible!

I could plan my trip around it

rogerj1 - 7-28-2004 at 09:44 AM

Tentatively planning a baja trip this August. I'm getting interference from work and family needs. Dates are slipping to the back of August. It'd be nice to have an event to shoot for beyond me just tripping around baja.

bajalou - 7-28-2004 at 10:42 AM

Sounds great - sure wish we could make it but it comes in the middle of out anual "visit to the old country" which has been planned for a while. But the next one----

Wow... we better take reservations!

David K - 7-28-2004 at 06:23 PM

Less than 24 hours since posting the date (a month away), people I emailed the invitation to have been jumping at the idea. 20 already said they want to attend. If we only have room for 70, and it's still a month away, Antonio suggests we make a list. Even though we each are paying for our own meals, Palmazul needs a head count a few days before our party.
Please RSVP to info*at*vivabaja.com (change *at* to @) with the number in your group. Use: Bajacactus RSVP in the subject line. Since I have done this type of event before, I am helping Antonio with the guest list.

David K - 7-28-2004 at 08:04 PM

It just keeps geting better... The management of the Tijuana Cutural Center (where we may be seeing BAJO CALIFORNIA), may be providing a special viewing of the museum's Baja California exibits... This may become 'Tijuana welcomes the Baja Nomads'! Stay tuned...

[Edited on 7-30-2004 by David K]

Hi...

BajaCactus - 7-28-2004 at 10:18 PM

Thank you very much David for helping out with all the posts and e-mails...you are a true friend...:D

I was very busy during the day and I could not post until now...

Now... about our gahthering... EVERYONE is invited to our reunion...no one is excluded.... the point is to enjoy as much as we can each other company, talk about Baja, watch a movie, enjoy a great meal and most important....have a GREAT TIME!!!:D

I am trying to get a small movie theater CECUT (the big sphere right next to Plaza Rio), has besides the museum...they can fit around 60 people there, but if we have more people coming, they have other options...

I already spoke with the Director of CECUT and he is very happy that we have considered them.... they also offered some other great stuff for the group... I am having a reunion with them this friday... as soon as I have the details and specifics I will post them here...(David already gave you a glimse of them...:D)

About Palma Azul... they do have excellent food and the restaurant's main theme is Baja California....

I am meeting the owner of the restaurant tomorrow to get you some idea of their menu and also to work out some of the specifics about our reunion.....

We will need to know in advanced how many of us are attending to make sure there is room for everyone, David has offered his help to keep a record of the guest list... thanks David....:D

We are going to have a GREAT TIME!!.......JOIN US!!!

I will post more details as soon as I have them....

Antonio M.

August 22

Jack Swords - 7-29-2004 at 07:23 AM

Antonio (and David),

What a great idea! Please add myself and my wife, Mary Kay, to the confirmed list of those attending. Nice to have this happen while we are home in the USA. The only problem is driving from the Central Coast thru LA.

JESSE - 7-29-2004 at 02:22 PM

I will let you know in a couple of days, we where planning a vacation to Vancouver Island by the middle of August, but we are trying to work things out.

David K - 7-30-2004 at 07:22 AM

Jesse, that you would alter plans of a trip to Canada to be in Tijuana for this get-together is very admirable! I hope it works out that you can do both, and we will see you again, in Tijuana.

Ok....

BajaCactus - 7-30-2004 at 03:43 PM

The video place at Cecut is almost a done deal....they have room for 70 people there... so I guess that will have to be our maximum group size...

I am also trying to get for all of you a special feature presentation... in english... of the Omnimax movie "Oasis Marino".... this is a very good short film about the life in the coasts and rifs of the Gulf of Cortez....it is really great....!!!

And already got you a private guided tour... in english also....in the Museum of the Californias... they feature the missions of california and some of the artifacts used by the early Baja settlements, among other things.

So... we now have Bajo California movie.... "Oasis Marino" (Omnimax movie) and the Museum tour... all a BajaCactus treat only for your enjoyment.... I just need to work out the timing and scheduled with Cecut management.....

I will post more details on this as soon as I have them.....

[Edited on 7-30-2004 by BajaCactus]

Hi David and Antonio

Keri - 7-30-2004 at 06:07 PM

Mike and I are going to be there. Can't wait sounds great. k:spingrin::tumble::yes::bounce:

Palma Azul...

BajaCactus - 7-30-2004 at 11:27 PM

I got a great deal for us with the owners of Palma Azul...!!!

1.- They will receive us with an exclusive guided tour of their instalations and explanations (in english) of the Baja art they have in their restaurant.

2.- After that, they will give us a space by the garden area, with a complimentary glass of wine for everyone.

3.- And most importantly...they will prepare a very, very special menu only for us... and they will have their master chef prepare it on that day...

Palma Azul told me they will work on this special menu in the next couple of days and they will give it to me, along with the prices for me to post here.

You should know Palma Azul is one of the most exclusive restaurants in Tijuana, so, this will be a very special ocassion to know them and enjoy their Baja California meal....

I will post more details as they become available....

So many people have registered already!!... and we are still 3 weeks away....WOW!!!....

DavidK has been doing a GREAT job in letting people know about this gathering...thanks David!!!....:D

[Edited on 7-31-2004 by BajaCactus]

If you miss this event, don't say you weren't informed!

David K - 7-31-2004 at 11:30 PM

Here at my Oceanside CA home tonight (Sat.) I had two guests... Debra just returned from Bahia de los Angeles and Antonio (BajaCactus) drove up from Tijuana. Antonio brought my new 'got baja?' stickers (as seen on my web site home page and notebook) and business cards (from his printing company) and the latest details on the Aug. 22 get-together.

The event will be called the "Baja Cactus Cultural Fiesta" and will feature: an Omnimax film on Baja's marine life, snacks and Mexican candies, a guided tour of the Baja California museum, more yummy treats, and a private viewing of the film Bajo California at the Tijuana Cultural Center (all provided by Antonio). Then those who wish and RSVP'd will continue to Palmazul (Palma Azul), perhaps the finest restaurant in Tijuana, get a tour of the Baja exhibits there, enjoy a complementary glass of wine, and have a special meal prepared by the master chef served in their Garden Room... Antonio will post the price when it is known...

There will be even more surprises... But, I cannot mention them here until they are confirmed! Just make Aug. 22 happen and RSVP soon (70 is the max.) to: info*at*vivabaja.com

Tonight, Antonio got to see El Camote's Matomi Movie and the Lost Mission Hunt Preview which featured many of you Nomads just loving Baja. He was most interested in what is it about Baja that has Debra drive 1,000 miles (from near Seattle) just to reach the border of Baja.

He wants to make his Baja Cactus motel and El Rosario Pemex the most welcome and friendly places for visitors to use. Suggestions are welcomed and his email is posted in the membership information section here on Nomad.

Well, Antonio will share details as they become available...

BajaCactus - 8-1-2004 at 01:42 AM

The Matomi movie was great, you can really see everyone had a wonderful time.... It was also very well edited..... thanks David.

My time with Debra and David was short, but it was very well worth it, we talked about Baja, family, history, adventures in Baja, memories....I enjoyed it very much....:D

whodat54321 - 8-1-2004 at 03:05 PM

this is something I can't pass up.

hope there's still room for me....:)

David K - 8-1-2004 at 05:50 PM

Right now (Sun. 8-1), there is plenty of room. Just RSVP as instructed above and your name will be added. 70 people is the max for the theatre. We will have fun meeting and seeing and eating!

Satellite pictures....!!!!

BajaCactus - 8-2-2004 at 08:33 PM

Things are getting better and better regarding our little get together....!!!

As soon as Arman (Satellite Man) heard of the event, he not only reserved a space for himself and his girlfriend.... he also was kind enough to donate two of those spectacular satellite printouts of Baja: http://www.wvvinc.com/Baja_1.htm#Baja California
and also two certificates for any printouts: http://www.wvvinc.com/

These four excellent prints are 2 feet wide by 3 feet tall..... and will be raffle on the event.....GREAT SOUVENIRS TO TAKE HOME!!!:bounce:

Satellite Man.... any additional info you wish to add on this...???

Thanks a lot Satellite Man.... !!!!:D

I WANT TO GO!!!!!

M - 8-3-2004 at 07:40 AM

I am getting another hip surgery tomorrow. Yes, after 5 dislocations in 2 weeks, my ortho decided the new femeral head he gave me may not be a good fit. Pulling it all out and starting fresh. At least I'm now on a first name basis with all our local emegency crews and after the 3rd call involving a shreiking banshee they all now just come right to my house. Sigh. I am sure I will be up and mobile by the 22nd, and left to my own devices I WILL be there, however, I married this big guy 5 years ago that may have a say in my life. I will keep following the board after I get out of the hospital and hope #1 there is still room, and #2 that BHL will let me go. Hugs to all, M

Satellite Man - 8-3-2004 at 10:31 AM

First, I wan to thank BajaCactus for all of his hard work!! It takes a lot of time and effort to coordinate. So, thanks BajaCactus!!

I would also like to encourage others to donate to this event. It doesn?t have to be anything elaborate. Just something that Baja lovers will enjoy. The more we have for the raffle the more fun we will all have.

Additionally, I?m always looking for ideas on areas of Baja that I can create prints for. So, please feel free to contact me by email or through my website: http://www.wvvinc.com/

I look forward to meeting all of you.

Michelle

David K - 8-3-2004 at 05:29 PM

It is so good to see you post again! Yes, you and BHL need to have a day of fun in Tijuana... So we will see the two BBBB there, right?!

As for door prizes, Satellite Man is correct, winning something makes these gatherings even more fun. We had great success with door prizes at my Viva Baja events... If anyone has a Baja business or related product and would like some exposure or just be generous with your fellow Baja amigos, please contact me... as well as anyone who wishes to RSVP for the fiesta to info*at*vivabaja.com

At Viva Baja we had Baja books, hotel stays, dinners, camping equipment, tequila, cave art tours, and more donated for door prizes.

Thanks Satellite Man!

marla - 8-3-2004 at 05:56 PM

How close is Palmazul to the Camino Real hotel? I just booked a room there for Saturday night for $80! I hope it is the 5-star hotel that it promises. Based on the other rates, it is!

Baja Talk Radio

jrbaja - 8-4-2004 at 10:51 AM

is announcing the party and planning on attending. Someone from here, Pat ??? called in. Although he mistakenly gave the credit to D.K for this event, DK probably has his plate pretty full helping Antonio with this event so credit is due.
Anyway, with these guys promoting it, perhaps a little haste in your reservations may be in order.
Count us in for 4 seats ! And that includes the pie lady and trailer dude.

Baja Red - 8-4-2004 at 11:57 AM

Palmazul..where is it?

Baja Red - 8-4-2004 at 11:59 AM

David..since I don't spend a lot of time in Tijuana just exactly where is this restaurant? Is this where we would all meet up or some other location?? Thanks...Baja Red

Wow...

David K - 8-4-2004 at 02:42 PM

Palmazul: I think Marla provided the location... I have NOT been there.

Ted Donavan, Baja Talk Radio: I did not ask him to mention it on his radio show, I did tell him about it (for him and his wife and brother) as it seems that a Baja cultural fiesta would be something he would appreciate.

My part in this: Not as much as it seems Ted thinks! This is Antonio's idea and doing... I am helping spread the word to Baja amigos who have attended my past Viva Baja parties and to Baja Nomads of today, with this thread. I gladly am helping Antonio with logistics, but he is deciding on what we are going to experience and is paying for everything except the Palamazul part. That is, Antonio is providing for the two movies (Sea of Cortez film and Bajo California), guided tour of the Baja California museum, snacks and Baja candies as well.

There will be a sign in/ registration at the movie theatre (probably Tijuana Cultural Center)... that will be confirmed. Door prizes will be offered... I would go just for the chance of winning one of Satellite Man's posters! He is donating FOUR...

Antonio did email me from El Rosario today and said that the first movie will be a bit earlier than thought, so registration will be between 10 and 10:30 am Aug. 22. This has become an all day event instead of an afternoon only event (at no additional cost! Thank you Antonio).

IT IS IMPORTANT that you RSVP per my earlier posts at the email I gave... I have gotten RSVPs at my other email address and U2Us here... but, that isn't what I requested... I will respond and confirm your reservation and then forward your email to Antonio as back up.

We have about 30 RSVPs as of 2:30pm today (8-4-04). There is room for 70 for the two movies. Palmazul has simular room limitations. Please don't show up unless you have reserved a seat... Now, if there are cancellations before the event, anyone who emails me after the 70 limit will be on a back up list and you will be informed if you get in.

More details will be posted here...

David

Tried to use "info*@*vivabaja.com" and it said it couldn't be sent. ?? Nevertheless, sillas para 4 por favor.

David K - 8-4-2004 at 05:04 PM

10-4 JR, I have you down for 4... The email checks out fine per my web host, sorry it didn't work.

Anyone else have it not work?: Please try again, or use my other emails as back up. I am near my U2U limit, so I may not be able to respond that way and that is why I ask not to count on it, to reach me. My other emails besides info*at*vivabaja.com ?: davidk*at*davidksbaja.com baja4me*at*msn.com for starters. These all have excellent spam and virus filters. Make sure you put 'BajaCactus' in the subject box or it may go out with junk mail.

Do not open any emails with vivabaja.com or davidksbaja.com in the address as they are not from me... Those addresses are for receiving only, replies will come from my msn email.

I typed in the asteriscs

Perhaps that was the problem. But, thanks.

jrbaja - 8-4-2004 at 06:24 PM

If you by any chance don't fill all 70 seats, there are a few neighbors I would like to invite. First priorities of course go to the board members and Antonios guests.

David K - 8-4-2004 at 07:06 PM

Well, maybe that won't be a problem... as of 7pm Wed. we are up to 40 RSVPs... and what is it, 18 days still to go?

raffle donations

Cyndarouh - 8-4-2004 at 09:01 PM

I would like to donate a Apple Berry and Apple Cherry pie from Julian, for the raffle.
This will be sooo Fun!

El Jefe - 8-5-2004 at 08:54 PM

Looks like I'll see you all there without my sweetheart who will be up in Idaho. She has all the fun! Anyhow, I need to nail down a source for bamboo for the ramada on my house in the east cape. Seems to me sombody on this board knows a little bit about bamboo...

David K - 8-5-2004 at 09:13 PM

That's great Tom... send me an email. I bet we have more fun in Baja than Paula will in Idaho... Idaho? What's there, a potato party?:lol::lol:

JESSE - 8-5-2004 at 09:52 PM

I am still not sure i can make it, and excuse me for not taking the time to read the entire thread, but how much will this be per person? i have a few friends that are interested as well.

JESSE - 8-5-2004 at 09:54 PM

And also:

What will the dress code be?

Casual
Jimmy Buffet like
Baja Fishing like

or

Baja Local like?

David K - 8-5-2004 at 11:00 PM

It is in the thread Jesse... But, so you don't have to scroll up: The two movies, the museum tour, door prizes, snacks and candies: FREE (thanks to the generocity of BajaCactus and those who donate door prizes).

The dinner at PalmAzul you will pay, however, we will get a free glass of wine and a tour of the restaurant's Baja cave art reproductions and any other peninsula displays (I have never been there) and be seated in our own room and have a 'special' Baja meal prepared by their master chef.

Dress? Heck it's in your city amigo... Since it's an all day event with a museum tour and films, I suspect comfortable/casual... I will let Antonio inform us for sure...

Home in one piece again.....

Debra - 8-6-2004 at 03:26 AM

After 5 weeks on the road, Brendan and I (and the new "Baja Babe", my 5yr. old grand-daughter Payton....woops, I forgot, today, as of mid-night she is 6) Are home safe and sound. We met many old friends and several new...we visited a few that we only knew from the board and finally were able to put the names to the faces. It was especially a pleasure to meet Antonio (Baja Cactus), .....I learned and laughed as I heard storys of the history of El Rosario) I met Keri who left a message on my cell phone offering help when my 4Runner broke down in San Diego (thanks for the offer of help!) ,

Much thanks to Dave at the New York Deli (who fed the kids and I although he was closed) I had the Pastrami (yes David, I had it with mustard!) :O

And mucho thanks to "Banco Humfreville" had it not been for your wonderful friendship, we would have gotten the rig fixed only to have to turn back for Seattle. (that would have been a major BUMMER!)........(I'll explain more in email, but Oct. is looking GOOD!, can you handle 4 more crazy people from Port Orchard?)

and David.....Thanks for being the "big-mouth" that you are, ...as Choral called you, your "Baja Connection" thing saved my butt, thanks for all your help, if not for your "ralling the troops" I'd probebly still be in San Diego scratching my head wondering what to do. (or sticking my thumb out) :o

Jefe

jrbaja - 8-6-2004 at 08:06 AM

I can probably help you out with the bamboo. Where in east cape and when will you be down there?
Bamboo needs a minimum of 3 months to dry prior to using it for construction and should also be treated in one way or another for bug proof.
Let me know what I can do to help. We also do bamboo construction if you need assistance with your project.

JESSE - 8-6-2004 at 08:12 PM

Thanks David.

David K - 8-13-2004 at 12:48 AM

The total itinerary and details for Aug. 22 will be first emailed to all those with reservations, then posted here. The event Antonio has planned for us is out of this world and makes my Viva Baja party look like child's play! We are truly fortunate that Antonio came to Nomad and is such a cool hombre!

Wait untill you read what PalmAzul has in store for us for 'Peninsular Cuisine'!!! After a full day of movies (Ocean Oasis and Bajo California), museum tours, snacks, music, friendships, door prizes... our only cost is the museum/theatre parking and the gourmet Baja dinner and that even comes with a free glass of wine!

We still have some seats available, so email in your RSVP to info*at*vivabaja.com (*at*= @) ASAP! Don't miss being at the FIRST annual Baja Cactus Cultural Event. Many of the Nomad regulars are coming as well as many of the brand new Nomads. Full details will have maps and directions from the border... it is easy to get to the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) in the Zona Rio district.

Hasta la vista Nomads!

pappy - 8-14-2004 at 09:48 AM

i would like to go but it would be a bit much 9physically) to get there and back in one day and be fresh for new students on monday-especially having to get thru LA.hey Jack S. which is more demanding? the hike to SPM or trying to get thru LA??

About how to dress...

BajaCactus - 8-14-2004 at 05:59 PM

About how to dress....

There is no special dress code for this event....

We will be up and around all day.... sitting, standing, walking some more, sitting again..... .....so we better dress as casual and comfortable as we can....

Palma Azul has no problem with this neither.

Come with us... enjoy the show.... make new Baja friends....!!!:bounce::bounce::bounce:

There are few spaces left....but you can still get a place...

The easiest way to get to CECUT, is to cross the border at the San Ysidro-Tijuana port of entry.... here is an excellent link that shows the way....

CECUT is the one with the number 10, located in grid 8-J.....If you still have any doubts, feel free to ask by e-mail.

Because we have so many things prepared for you, it is very important to do our best effort to be at 10:00 am sharp at the registration desk, so we can begin as soon as possible... CECUT staff is very punctual with their showings, so this event will not be on "mexican time"...........:)

?De Nada Antonio, el gusto es mio!

This year has been tough for me, so much so that I did not put on one of my annual Viva Baja parties...

This event is as good, no it is even better than my fiestas and it makes me happy to do my part as 'the Baja Connection' to help you with it.

I will have the new "got baja?" stickers and busines cards you made at your Tijuana printing company to give out and a few remaing Viva Baja stickers too.

There are many new Nomads and a few non-Nomads attending... along with some of the folks that posted back on the Amigos board... like Neal Johns! He and one of the other first Amigos I met will be there.

Tomorrow I will post the Nomad's names going. There are 25 registered Nomad handles/names (with their spouses and/or guests) going.

See you Sunday morning!

Hi David'

I am negotiating for a spot for a "Pizza Port". The "CHOWDA" here is great and the Maine lobbies are to die for!

Hi,

First of all, we would like to express our deepest appreciation and thanks to all the friends, who are doing a huge effort, to come all the way to Tijuana, and attend the BajaCactus Cultural Fiesta 2004.... thank you friends for being so positive and open to receive the friendship, that we as bajacalifornians, wish to offer you...

We have high hopes that this reunion becomes one more step in the continous bonding of the tree Californias, even though we speak different lenguages and that we come from very different beliefs, we do have a something much stronger in common... we all LOVE this land and the humbleness of its simple people.

On the other hand, those of you who were unable to attend, let it be known that you will be miss, and we hope to have the opportunity to meet you very soon in the next reunion or event....:D

We are fill with joy, happiness and excitment with the arrival of this next sunday, because we will be able to meet in person, with so many nomads and friends which we only know online, and we finally will be able to offer you a smile, face to face, along with a sincere and strong handshake ...:D

As you may notice, we have not posted much lately....we have been extremely busy preparing and setting everything up to receive you as you deserve... but we promise to return more next week.

Well friends, I hope you will like what we have put together for you, and we shall be waiting for you this next sunday.... again... THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ACCEPTING OUR INVITATION!!!......
