Another great Baja Weekend 9-18-10

David K - 9-19-2010 at 10:34 PM

Just a short note... with a full trip report coming soon!

We went to El Rosario for my 53rd birthday, as I can't think of a better place to be than in Baja California.

Keeping it easy, no camping, so... less work for me! We had a super comfortable two nights at Baja Cactus Motel and Antonio even had a surprise present waiting for me when we returned from four wheeling to Las Pintas on Saturday...
Thanks Antonio! :bounce::biggrin:

The route south Friday afternoon was Otay to Corridor 2000 (formerly Blvd. 2000) to Hwy. 1 to La Fonda where we hopped onto the toll road for the quickest route into Ensenada, as the sun had set.

Corridor 2000 was in great shape, 110 KPH speed limit was easy and we took photos... The same coming home today, except we turned east to Tecate on the free road (4 lanes wide, all the way) Mex. 2...

Arrived in El Rosario at 11:30 pm, Friday... easy drive... Tacos in Maneadero twice at Los Poblanos, going south and coming home... great!

Saturday we explored around Las Pintas, but this time we also drove around and parked on on top and saw so much more than I had seen before just walking to the top.

No problems other than another flat on the BFG tires... from a sharp rock, again...

A very fun and enjoyable weekend in Baja... just what I wanted! :light::cool:

Left El Rosario about 11:15 this morning... Sunday (tonight) border wait at Tecate was 20 minutes, starting at 6:20 pm.

Lot's of photos and those details you guys like... mileages, GPS, stuff... look to the Baja Nomad Baja Trip Reports forum soon! HERE: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=47965

Reminds me of something from a Tim Burton film. Pretty cool.

Happy Birthday. keep on collecting them. The BF Goodrich tire
has been a longtime favorite of mine for Baja. Iwas am going to need some new tires soon and was wondering about how
you rate them, seeing that you actually stray off the blacktop.

Ken Cooke - 9-21-2010 at 05:37 PM

Happy birthday from Leidys and I. We had a great time with you and Elizabeth this summer at Shell Island, and we'll be ready to do it again next Spring.:bounce:

David K - 9-22-2010 at 09:26 AM

Sadly, I have nothing good to say other than they work good in the sand and quiet on the highway... otherwise they are junk... What the Tacoma has are the Rugged Trail T/A's (called 'Rugged Fails' by folks on the Tacoma World forums) and I have had 2 flats from sharp rocks so far... one at 13,000 miles and another on a different tire at 16,000 miles , last weekend. Before the trip I saw a screw in one of my tires and had it patched before we left, a different tire than the other two... So 3 of 4 BFGs have had failures... The screw may have been unavoidable, but for rocks on a graded road to pucture steel belted tires that are only half worn or newer is rediculous.

Many here love the All Terrain T/As from BFG... but I have seen and had sidewall failures on them... too many to ignore.

I hope to get the new General Grabbers, if I can swing it...

I sent you a cake DavidK

mcfez - 9-22-2010 at 09:34 AM

Happy Birthday.
The cake was shipped to your campsite at Shell Beach. Did you receive it yet?

Darn it, no!

We weren't there... actually Shell beach is were Russ lives (Punta Chivato)... :light: Maybe he got it?

We went to El Rosario and Las Pintas for my birthday...;) Shell Island would have been our next choice, however!

Thanks for the kind wishes!

capt. mike - 9-22-2010 at 05:54 PM

interesting 1st hand reports.
so WHY does BFG rule baja score stuff?
are they a diff class of tire over what you have installed, DK??? you get what you pay for of course - what am i missing here?

for my off road aircraft tires - dirt strips with kick up rocks and other exciting stuff - i rely on michelins special 6 ply for 6:60 wheels.

when i have a flat it is not a pretty picture...been there. the day is over usually...hahahahah. good thing i carry emergency adult bevs and a sleeping bag!

BajaBlanca - 9-22-2010 at 06:57 PM

Happy late birthday !! Glad you could spend it doing what you love best.

The tires from BFG that win Baja races are NOT made for highway use or even sold to non-racers... they are the Baja T/A. Sure, some may also use street legal BFGs like the All Terrain T/A in the other classes. The General Grabber was also such a tire, but recently made a DOT approved highway version thet looks just like the racing tire... that is what I would like.

I did not install the BFGs (Rugged Trail T/As), they are the tire Toyota puts on the Off Road TRD model Tacomas. They are obviously a lesser grade tire than the popular All Terrrain T/A, as they last only 30,000 miles, if that... and get flats easily.
