New fishing hat catches fish

dtbushpilot - 10-19-2010 at 02:34 PM

You can never be too careful when it comes to fishing. I don't consider myself to be superstitious but I am careful about changing things that work. I have a favorite fishing hat but Jill thought I would look cute in one of those metro-sexual fly fisherman hats so she bought me one. I tried it on and said "this hat makes me look like a dork"....Jill replied "the hat doesn't make you look like a dork"......I think there was a hidden meaning there....

So I agreed to give it a try. We packed up the dog and a couple of rods and headed to La Ribera for lunch. Along the way I spotted about half a dozen fair sized roosters working a school of small sardina. I grabbed my small outfit as it was rigged with a 2" 3/4oz chrome crippled herring that looked about the size of the bait in the water. A rooster nailed it as soon as it hit the water and the fight was on. He was quite a spirited fellow and jumped way out of the water several times. Jill actually managed to catch him in the air......I'm not saying that like she isn't a good photographer and got lucky, it's just hard to catch them in the air...

So I got him up to the beach and with Cacahuate's help got him unhooked. In the process of the transition from beach to "fisherman's pose" I managed to drop my rod in the sand (not good on those little baitcasters) and a wave came and swept it away. I was trying to get a satisfactory hold on the fish so I stepped on the rod and told Jill to grab it. Well, she did but with the rod in one hand and the camera in the other she couldn't take the picture. About that time the fish caught his second wind and got frisky with me. It was either let him go then or risk injury to one or both of us so I chose option "A". He was a pretty nice fish and Jill was disappointed that we didn't get the "money shot".

I cast back out and had another one on immediately. I got him up to the beach and decided to pick him up and get the shot while the lure was still in his mouth. This usually works OK and makes for a good picture but not this time. The fish (over 15lbs) was still a little green and started thrashing around in my arms, I had my rod tucked under my arm and couldn't control the fish so I dropped him back in the water (involuntarily). He hit the water at full throttle and with my rod pointing at the water and about 3 feet of line out my line snapped like boiled linguine......I really liked that lure....

Not to be deterred I grabbed the other rod with my "go to" lure attached and got back in the water. I was instantly rewarded with a hook up on a smaller fish. Maybe I'd be able to manhandle this one for a picture. As luck would have it I was able to overpower him on the beach, so high was my confidence level that I took the picture with the lure still attached (guess I didn't learn my lesson). This time I prevailed and got the picture and a clean release.

So, now my questions are:
Did the hat bring me good luck?
Did the hat bring me bad luck because I dropped a just serviced reel in the sand and lost a good lure?
Does the hat make me look like a dork?

I'd do a poll but I don't know how. Thank you in advance for your observations.....dt

mulegemichael - 10-19-2010 at 05:20 PM

you only look like a dork, david, if you FEEL like a dork...and i'm sure you do....AND....i thought you were crippled...you haven't been whining again, have you?

comitan - 10-19-2010 at 05:30 PM

I wish you guys would get off the dorky thing, because I have one just like it but different color and my wife out fishes me all the time.

bajabass - 10-19-2010 at 05:43 PM

Actually those hats work well at keeping your neck, face, and ears out of the sun. A dorky sombrero of sorts! Don't let Dra. Bajabass see those, or I will own three of them A.S.A.P. :O

woody with a view - 10-19-2010 at 05:48 PM

the dorky hat is offset by the abundance of fish you're catching, the hot wife, and the peanut at your heels..... sort of:light:

What kind of fish is the 4 legged one in the picture? Maybe a Dog Tooth snapper?

Are you the alpha? What a difference a day makes

Cypress - 10-19-2010 at 06:51 PM

That type of hat gives the best protection from the sun. I've got two or three of 'em.

Skipjack Joe - 10-19-2010 at 06:57 PM

I'm not sure if the hat gave you luck or not. Further testing is required.

Next time you go, alternate casting with the hat and without the hat.

Keep track of all of the hits, bumps, and hookups. Along with the number of casts. Report back and we'll run a standard deviation.

This trip was the day before the "quad incident". I still possessed my alpha status then........I'll bet that stupid hat had something to do with me becoming a "beta"....I'm throwing that sucker in the trash.....

BajaBlanca - 10-19-2010 at 07:01 PM

jsut make "dorky" the in thing and then it is over and done with.

and

if the hat is dorky, then Les and I both are, well I hate to say it, but ... I have one for when I go out and about cleaning up our village ... and he has many of them for fishing

That really is an epic shot, that sucker is getting some serious air....dt

Bugman - 10-19-2010 at 08:13 PM

It's kind of like that old "if a tree falls in the forest" saying. Just remove the hat for any future photo opportunities and nobody has to know! Nice fish by the way. Can't wait to get down there next month.

krafty - 10-19-2010 at 09:40 PM

think the hat is cool and the pescado muy bonita! Hope u r feeling better

Russ - 10-20-2010 at 03:07 AM

I know this doesn't apply to you, but "dorky" doesn't apply after 60. So mine is cool not dorky.
I am so envious. Corvina just don't pull like a rooster does. I'm hoping they will return to the shore fishing here. I have heard of some big roosters taken from the boats at a secret spot only Pescador can reveal.Hope you heal quickly and you take Jill and Cacahuate to record your catches. She really got some great photos. Are you using the RZR?

Beachgirl - 10-20-2010 at 05:15 AM

DT here's my monster from last Spring...too heavy for me to hold so Mulegemichael did it for me. I had on a light pink visor...next time you come to Mulege I can loan it to you....or Jill.

Use it as you like but if you get money or beer for it I get half......

Bad news baitcast, I just received an email from the "Pescador Grande Club".....They had been considering me for induction into the "Pescador Grande Hall of Fame" but they received pictures from an anonymous source of me wearing a dorky hat and had to disqualify me for consideration......they encouraged me to apply again for consideration some time in the future.....

I don't know who did it.....it was a selfish and cowardly thing to do.....I only share my fishing stories with my Nomad brethren and sisteren so I know it was one of you.....

You should be ashamed of yourself.....trying to hurt a desperate old man and deprive him of some tiny bit of satisfaction in the little time he has left on this earth.......

Maybe I'll be able to hold on for a few more years....maybe I can somehow get past this shame ......find a way to forget the ridicule and scorn of my peers for my fashion fax-paux......

Some day....God willing, I will be reconsidered for induction into the "Pescadore Grande Hall of Fame"........dt

:(Woah is me. That's so touching David. I thought I had a tear in my left eye but, no, it was just what was left after Masons good morning slobber kiss. I'm sure if the A-hole that sent the damning report to the "Pescador Grande Club" sent the above in you'd be reconsidered. Any fishing related membership would have to consider a BS rating among the top qualifications and you just demonstrated that you are quite full if it. However your alpha status may have taken a major hit.

A lonely beach, warm clear water and a Rooster in flight........Tell your Lady that picture is about as good as it gets,we envy you both.
