New fishing hat catches fish

You can never be too careful when it comes to fishing. I don't consider myself to be superstitious but I am careful about changing things that work. I have a favorite fishing hat but Jill thought I would look cute in one of those metro-sexual fly fisherman hats so she bought me one. I tried it on and said "this hat makes me look like a dork"....Jill replied "the hat doesn't make you look like a dork"......I think there was a hidden meaning there....

So I agreed to give it a try. We packed up the dog and a couple of rods and headed to La Ribera for lunch. Along the way I spotted about half a dozen fair sized roosters working a school of small sardina. I grabbed my small outfit as it was rigged with a 2" 3/4oz chrome crippled herring that looked about the size of the bait in the water. A rooster nailed it as soon as it hit the water and the fight was on. He was quite a spirited fellow and jumped way out of the water several times. Jill actually managed to catch him in the air......I'm not saying that like she isn't a good photographer and got lucky, it's just hard to catch them in the air...

So I got him up to the beach and with Cacahuate's help got him unhooked. In the process of the transition from beach to "fisherman's pose" I managed to drop my rod in the sand (not good on those little baitcasters) and a wave came and swept it away. I was trying to get a satisfactory hold on the fish so I stepped on the rod and told Jill to grab it. Well, she did but with the rod in one hand and the camera in the other she couldn't take the picture. About that time the fish caught his second wind and got frisky with me. It was either let him go then or risk injury to one or both of us so I chose option "A". He was a pretty nice fish and Jill was disappointed that we didn't get the "money shot".

I cast back out and had another one on immediately. I got him up to the beach and decided to pick him up and get the shot while the lure was still in his mouth. This usually works OK and makes for a good picture but not this time. The fish (over 15lbs) was still a little green and started thrashing around in my arms, I had my rod tucked under my arm and couldn't control the fish so I dropped him back in the water (involuntarily). He hit the water at full throttle and with my rod pointing at the water and about 3 feet of line out my line snapped like boiled linguine......I really liked that lure....

Not to be deterred I grabbed the other rod with my "go to" lure attached and got back in the water. I was instantly rewarded with a hook up on a smaller fish. Maybe I'd be able to manhandle this one for a picture. As luck would have it I was able to overpower him on the beach, so high was my confidence level that I took the picture with the lure still attached (guess I didn't learn my lesson). This time I prevailed and got the picture and a clean release.

So, now my questions are:
Did the hat bring me good luck?
Did the hat bring me bad luck because I dropped a just serviced reel in the sand and lost a good lure?
Does the hat make me look like a dork?

I'd do a poll but I don't know how. Thank you in advance for your observations.....dt

Actually those hats work well at keeping your neck, face, and ears out of the sun. A dorky sombrero of sorts! Don't let Dra. Bajabass see those, or I will own three of them A.S.A.P. :O

the dorky hat is offset by the abundance of fish you're catching, the hot wife, and the peanut at your heels..... sort of:light:

What kind of fish is the 4 legged one in the picture? Maybe a Dog Tooth snapper?

I'm not sure if the hat gave you luck or not. Further testing is required.

Next time you go, alternate casting with the hat and without the hat.

Keep track of all of the hits, bumps, and hookups. Along with the number of casts. Report back and we'll run a standard deviation.
