Road to Agua Verde

Bugman - 10-21-2010 at 07:40 AM

Anybody been downt to Agua Verde lately? I am curious to know if the road is in decent shape. I plan to go there in a few weeks. Thanks for any info!

Kencito - 11-2-2010 at 03:05 PM

The road was in decent shape in late May when I drove it last. Since then I've talked a few times with some friends who live along it and who regularly drive to Loreto. No mention of the AV road being any worse than normal. The lack of rain however is a big problem for the ranch folks.

BajaBlanca - 11-2-2010 at 03:29 PM

I've heard that agua verde is extremely beautiful. pics please.

motoged - 11-2-2010 at 07:44 PM

It IS beautiful :saint: Good thing there isn't much surf there...pics would really get someone's shorts in a twist

Freshly graded two-and-a-half weeks ago...to Rancho San Cosme.

Hey Bugman, how about a report? Or did I miss it?

Bugman - 12-29-2010 at 02:38 PM

Sorry, got busy and forgot to report! The road into Agua Verde was in great shape. I made it in quickly with no trouble and did not even need 4WD until the final drop to the beach. We (My wife and two little boys) camped there for 8 days and it went by way too fast. The weather was near perfect and fishing from shore was very productive. I actually did better from shore than the few days I tried in a panga. I wish I was still there!

Hi! I just happened to come across this thread. My husband and I are heading down for our second road trip to Baja this next March. We've heard of Agua Verde and would love to go there, but we were worried about the road as well. It sounds like it's passable, but should we have any big concerns about taking a truck camper down there? We have a Dodge 2500 Diesel 4x4 and a 9' truck camper. We would also probably have a 15' boat, but we might be able to leave that at a friend's for a few days if that would be too much. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Spearo - 12-30-2010 at 03:21 PM

I think I met you guys on Bahia Concepcion last spring. I am also a North Idaho resident. Seems we are all thinking of Baja with Old Man Winter kicking our asses presently. Sounds like you bought a boat. Funny, I bought a Dodge 2500 and a camper...

Maybe I'll see you on Cocos. I'm not heading down until March because Semana Santos is late this year.

Buenos Suerte

Carlos

angbrown - 12-30-2010 at 04:26 PM

Wow! Great to hear from you - yes that's us! We're coming down again. We'll be there late March-early April. I'm definitely hoping to make it back to Coco's again. We just got 2+ feet of snow in the past 3 days so I'm definitely starting to dream of Baja. We bought a 15 foot smokercraft boat this year and really excited to take it out into the bay. Matt spends every day on RV.net forums talking to other camper owners too. You should shoot him an e-mail and maybe you could give us some boat pointers and he can offer some tips on the truck & camper! His e-mail is info@brownmountainbuilding.com. See you in a few months!

There are two or three very tight hairpin turns going down that road as it drops down toward the beaches. Very large vehicles or those towing a long trailer will probably have some issues. There is a tour company that sometimes brings people down to the beach right where the road first hits the water at Rancho San Cosme and that full sized bus won't even attempt it. They park up top before the road gets real twisty and shuttle people down in smaller vehicles. I think there are some pics someplace on this forum of one of the bad hairpin turns on that road.

angbrown - 1-4-2011 at 01:50 PM

Thanks! Good to know. I had heard similar reports, so we'll probably wait for a time when we aren't pulling a trailer, but I would love to find a way to get down there at some point. Looks absolutely amazing.

GrOUper-GAr - 1-8-2011 at 04:43 AM

gets pretty tight here.
and a little steeper than it looks in this pic

shari - 1-8-2011 at 08:55 AM

Angbrown...we did that road with a toyota pick up towing our Boston Whaler...it was OK to San Cosmo...athough not for the faint of heart and make sure you have good brakes. I dont recommend it towing a boat...you can leave it at the entrance...go do the road and make your decision then.

But we had to stop and "rebuild" some tight corners and put rocks in some arroyos to get through...I didnt think we'd make it and wouldnt do it again towing a boat that size. It sure is a nice place to explore by boat though...maybe put the boat in at Ligui and drive it and anchor it at your campsite....a hassle but worth it....have fun!

Also, we always get either a little goat or lamb to BBQ while we are there....ask martin, the cop to get ya one...his wife will even cook it for ya. Try to bring clothes or stuff to donate there...say hi for juan & shari!

Great idea!

Agua Verde road and trailers

SrBurro - 1-8-2011 at 01:57 PM

Hola everyone. Been reading these posts for years. Thanx to everyone!

2 years ago a friend of mine hauled a 24' travel trailer all the way to Agua Verde - yup, he had to build a few wider sections on some hairpins, but he made it!
Makes me feel like a real wussy (or smart!) worrying about hauling in a 6' x 8' single axle cargo trailer behind the chev 4x4.

What would you folks think about that, possible, stupid or just plain crazy??

vandenberg - 1-8-2011 at 02:08 PM

Been there many times. Never by road however.
Putting your boat in at Escondido and it's a 3/4 hour trip by water. If you want to camp, your boat holds as much as the average pickup. Why chance it?:no:

SrBurro - 1-8-2011 at 04:00 PM

Thanx Vandenburg - good idea except my boat is only 18.5' and I don't think I could drag MrT (my 100# Rott.) anywhere close to the water!!!!! Maybe I'll lose the trailer and just rough it!

Wow... can you post a larger version of that photo? Intense!!!

I'll try. I don't know a pixel from a pixie. I took your advice and signed up with photobucket and you will notice my avatar!! Huge victory. I am muddling through and probably adding a few brain cells also. I hope saved the original image.

Thanks for trying... On your Photobucket album, you click the red button at the top 'Upload Now' then in the new window is the upload to Photobucket box... at the bottom, in tiny blue letters is this:

Customize your upload options

A new box opens with many pixel size options...

100x75
160x120
320x240
640x480
800x600
1024x768

and MORE!

Click the 640x480 size for most photos at large size on Nomad.

When I have maps or satellite images, I do use the 800x600 size, for max. detail... but won't distort the Nomad page sideways.

Then click SAVE at the bottom of that box.

Now, all the photo you upload will be sized correctly for viewing on Nomad. Just re-load the photo you already did earlier that was at the small size.

Try it out! Remember, you have an edit option on Nomads, you can go back and change photos!

Was this actually on the road to AV??

OK - so you've talked me out of towing - but there's no problem with chev 4x4, right? Know anyone that might truck/boat in camping stuff from Escondido to AV and back - then I might persuade MrT to take a short boat ride.....

Image not on the AV road, but it could be.
Just throw your gear in the boat and cruise on down to AV. It's only 18 miles as the pelican flies.
