Baseball playoffs-baja trip in delay mode

Martyman - 10-21-2010 at 11:01 AM

I was planning on leaving Oct 29 but...with my team,The Giants, beating the filling out of the Phils. Might not go til November 5th. I'm a season ticketholder and have tics for all the world series games in San Francisco. I'm going tonight with my sons and my brother to watch them clinch the pennant!
The local fishing report said that they are catching yellowtail off the coast up here and the albacore bite is wide open. Decisions...decisions.
I want my cake and will eat it too. Oh I'm sneaking a bottle of 2003 rioja into the game!
Too bad about the Padres!

Brian L - 10-21-2010 at 11:13 AM

Padres season ticker holder here. I'm rooting for the Giants now, after the Braves lost out.

Where is the yellowtail hitting? Near San Fran?

bajafreaks - 10-21-2010 at 12:54 PM

Just thought I'd throw a "Go Giants" out there to see what kind of reaction I get. I'm a life long Giants fan and just really stoked for my team.

elgatoloco - 10-21-2010 at 12:57 PM

It is nice to see no noticable steriod freaks on the team. Has Lincicum gotten his prescription for the maryjane yet?

Go Phils! :saint:

Martyman - 10-21-2010 at 12:57 PM

The albacore are 12 miles offshore of Sonoma County and it sounds like there are a few yellowtail with them.

In NorCal you just walk through certain neighborhoods and pick a budd. It's as plentiful as Bougainvillia in LaPaz

mariposajim - 10-21-2010 at 01:05 PM

The Giants will do great as will norcal Just so long as we have more maryjane buds than conservatives.

sanquintinsince73 - 10-21-2010 at 01:23 PM

Go Giants and Rangers. That is a match-up I'd surely watch.

krafty - 10-21-2010 at 07:42 PM

Go Giants is right-NY GIANTS!!
you mean Giants and Yankees, right? could happen..........

The Giants WILL choke

Mike99km - 10-22-2010 at 05:05 PM

If you sell your tickets. I'm sure it would pay for the gas both ways, after all it's only the Giants and they are going to sweep ;D:bounce::bounce::bounce:

bajabass - 10-22-2010 at 06:00 PM

I'm not a baseball freak, but I could see cause for a delay. Cancel, nah, sell the tickets and go to Baja!!!

Skipjack Joe - 10-22-2010 at 08:47 PM

Will the Giants choke?

Have they been overachieving in the post season?

Hook - 10-22-2010 at 09:20 PM

I bought the smallest albie I could find, right off a boat in Newport, Oregon, in late September. They had some as large as 35 lbs. but I was living on the road and had no real storage space.

One thing I noticed IMMEDIATELY upon cleaning it. The longfins up there have a much higher oil content than what I was used to catching SOB in Mexican waters. It was delicious raw or cooked.

I'm hoping for the Giants.............but I think their hitting has hit the wall everyone expected it to. Just pitch around Cody Ross and Posey and the Giants will be lucky to score two runs a game.

Prediction: Rangers take on the Phils and win their first WS crown, 4 games to 2.

MVP? Why, Cliff Lee, of course......................

Hook - 10-23-2010 at 10:03 PM

WOW............Los Gigantes did it!!!!!

Skipjack Joe - 10-23-2010 at 11:03 PM

Amazing! The starting pitcher goes 2+ innings and they still win the game. They have a great pitching staff and Bochy made all the right decisions. He's a very underrated coach.

Hook - 10-24-2010 at 06:38 AM

OK, Joe, what's yer prediction in the WS?

I'll take the Rangers in 5. SF pitching has been helped by playing two teams (Atlanta and Phil) that hadn't been hitting well for the last month of the season.

The same could be said of Texas (Tampa and NY) but I think the Rangers are by far the better hitting team and the starting pitching is about even.

The Giants do have an edge in the bullpen, so IF they can contain the Ranger hitters, that's the only way SF wins it.

Santiago - 10-24-2010 at 08:20 AM

Marty: this one's for you.

Skipjack Joe - 10-24-2010 at 10:00 AM

I think that if the Giants pitch like they did in the Atlanta series Santiago will be a happy man.

If the Giants had pitched the way they did against the Phils they would have never gotten past Atlanta.

If 3 of their 4 starters play to their full potential they should take Texas. But Sanchez is struggling. Lincecum isn't in top form either.

One thing's for sure, if Boche had been coaching the Giants in the 2002 World Series they would have been champs. Did you see him pull Lincecum after 1 out? The man is fearless. Baker keeps Lincecum in because of his reputation. BTW, Alex and I watched the 2002 World Series at that pizza parlor in St. Rosalia, the one with Marilyn Monroe on the wall. I'll never forget that 8th inning home run in game 6.

We get nothing but Giants baseball on the tube. It's hard to be a Dodger fan when all you get are their box scores in the morning paper.

Hook - 10-24-2010 at 10:48 AM

You probably mean the SEVENTH inning home run hit by Spiezio; the 3 run shot in game 6? That made it 5-3, Giants still leading.

Darin Erstad DID hit a homer in the in the 8th but that was a solo shot and only made the score 5-4, Giants still leading. Then came the single to center by Salmon, the bloop double to left by Garret Anderson that Bonds stereoided out thighs wouldnt allow him to get to, and then the ringing double up the alley by Glaus (again, past the pumped up Bonds) for the lead. After that comeback, facing elimination, the 4-1 win the following day seemed SOOOO anticlimactic. It really wasn't a very exciting game.

I think the edge Texas has is that 2 of the 4 Giant starters are lefties, which plays well into Texas' strength; Vlad, Michael Young, Cruz, Bengie, Elvis, Kinsler. Hamilton hits everyone, so that doesnt matter.

If Cliff Lee can shut down the Yankees and the Rays, he should get his two wins against the weaker Giant hitters. That leaves the Giants having to win when Sanchez and Bumgardner pitch. Not a very likely scenario.

My sleeper pick for Series MVP...........Mitch Moreland.

[Edited on 10-24-2010 by Hook]

toneart - 10-24-2010 at 11:09 AM

The Giants won last night the way they always win...painfully. Barely squeeking by with one-run wins is what they do, causing agonizing suspense and pain to the San Francisco fans.

In the Series with the Rangers, it should be more of the same. I do think the deep bullpen and Bochy will make the difference in the end. Like the playoffs, the games seem to hinge on the breaks, and avoiding errors. There is such parity this year. Any game in any series could go either way.

So, fill yer pipe. Enjoy. Baja will be there waiting for you when the Giants finally win the World Series. Peace Out!:tumble::cool:

The Tonester :smug:

Santiago - 10-24-2010 at 11:48 AM

It's hard to argue against Hook's analysis, so I won't. He and Igor are fundamentally correct; the Giants don't really have much of a chance. But this year, things just seemed to break their way when they needed it. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if SD hadn't gone 0 for 10 in Sept. We're going to Costco today to lay in 7 games worth of brats, beer, ribs and all the fixings. My buddy's got his new fancy smancy TV all ready. I've got my voice mail recording set up so customers know why I'm not answering the phone. I've bought enough tissue to get through the eventual outcome as I weep in victory and defeat. SWMBO has enough D cell batteries to get her through the next 2 weeks as apparently I'm useless whenever my team's in the series.
Me and my house?.... we're ready.

Skipjack Joe - 10-24-2010 at 01:46 PM

I didn't say the Giants don't have much of a chance.

Three of the four best pitchers in that series wear a Giants uniform. Even with 2 Lee victories they still need two more, and I don't believe he will get 2 wins to begin with.

Hook mentioned the weaker hitting of Philadelphia and Atlanta. The hitting always looks weak when it's neutralized by good pitching. All those hall of famers, Mays, McCovey, and Cepeda amounted to nothing when they faced Koufax and Drysdale. Similarly, the Texans will mysteriously go into a hitting slump in the World Series.

The Giants have a great chance if Lincecum, Caine, and Sanchez bring their A games. But all three have to be right on and that has seldom happened. We need a 'Perfect Storm' <groan>.

The starting pitching is about even? There you are wrong my friend.
The braves and phils wern't slumping until they met the Gigantes. Good pitching will beat good hitting most days.

I'm going to game one on Wednesday. Trip delayed til Nov 5.

Hook - 10-25-2010 at 03:03 PM

Braves hadn't hit all year. Phils improved a bit in September but were still underachieving according to their manager, Charlie Manuel, during his post-series interviews. He stated emphatically that lack of hitting was the biggest problem the Phils had this year.

Texas has hit well all year AND they FINALLY have all their players healthy, for the first time since April.

I just dont think the Giants can keep up this "garbage" method of scoring runs. Or, if they do, it wont be enough runs to outscore the Rangers.

[Edited on 10-25-2010 by Hook]

Skipjack Joe - 10-25-2010 at 07:28 PM

Hook,

Here are the stats from game 6.

San Francisco 002 000 010 — 3 13 0
Philadelphia 200 000 000 — 2 8 1

There's a lot of talk about the Giants being 'lucky'. As I see it had the Phillies won that would have been lucky as they had half the hits the Giants had. In fact, you could argue that getting 3 runs for 13 hits is actually pretty 'unlucky'.

No, the Giants are for real. They've a two-time Cy Young winner and a no-hit pitcher in their starting rotation.

But what do I know.

I was sure Sonny Liston was gonna knock the bejeezus out of Cassius Clay.

I was sure the Baltimore Colts were gonna were going to stomp on Namath's Jets.

I said that Lee couldn't win the series for the Rangers by hisself (I think they talk that way in Texas), but then I remembered what Hershiser did to the A's.

krafty - 10-25-2010 at 08:24 PM

We are Yankee fans, and them Texans looked GOOD!

Hook - 10-25-2010 at 09:28 PM

Well, I guess this is why they play the games............to settle it once and for all.

That would mean they would win both games Cliff Lee starts.

Now, THAT'S a bold prediction!

Bajahowodd - 10-27-2010 at 01:33 PM

Biggest loser: Fox. Predictions are that this series will have some of the lowest ratings seen in a long, long time. One cause is that the Giants are in it. LA, being the second largest media market in the country is chock full of Giant haters. So ratings should be in the basement in LA.

Personally, I don't get how anyone could "hate" a sports team. But, that's how the media reports it.

Errr.... You were saying?

Hook - 10-27-2010 at 08:44 PM

Havent been proved wrong yet.

Lee had only three of his four pitches tonight. I think he got exactly ONE curveball over for a strike. The Giants really didnt have to adjust to much change of speed. And they took advantage of it. Very good hitting night by the Giants.

[Edited on 10-28-2010 by Hook]

Skipjack Joe - 10-27-2010 at 09:23 PM

Yes, but the prediction isn't as bold anymore.

Anyway, I was going to ask you, Hook. Have you noticed how often the Giants hit balls down the right and left field lines? I'm thinking the hitters must be actually trying to do that because it seems as though every 3rd hit is of that nature. Ever hear of such a strategy?

P.S. Santiago is going to sleep well tonight.

[Edited on 10-28-2010 by Skipjack Joe]

toneart - 10-27-2010 at 09:49 PM

There was no pain in San Francisco tonight....................except for the hurt the Giants put on the Rangers. :smug::bounce:

Hook - 10-27-2010 at 10:24 PM

Only a very few really good hitters have so much bat control that they can put a ball along the line whenever they want to. Rod Carew comes to mind. Matty Alou was another; you older Giant fans will remember him. These were both what are referred to as "slap" hitters, i.e.' they can slap the ball anywhere it's pitched. Slap hitters are usually not home run hitters.

The number of balls hit down the lines is usually coincidental. But, yes, there were quite a few of them tonight. Most of the Giants hits down the line were due to being slightly "out in front" of a lot of pitches. If, as a batter, you EXACTLY time your swing to the exact moment the pitch is crossing the mid section of the plate, then theoretically the ball will go up the middle of the diamond somewhere. Being "out in front" of a ball means you're swinging just slightly early. The ball can still remain fair but it wont go up the middle of the diamond. If you're too much out in front, the ball likely will go way foul OR you can be so out in front that your bat crosses the plate before the ball get there.

With Cliff Lee unable to command (throw for a strike) his curveball tonight, he was reluctant to use it. All his other pitches were in the 88-92 mph range. This simplified the task for the Giant hitters. With no curveballs likely to be thrown (curves are generally in the 70-80 mph range), timing the bat to the speed of the pitch became easier. It is harder to hit 88-92 mph pitches, when an occasional 70-80 mph pitch is included. Your timing as a hitter gets thrown off by seeing pitches of vastly different speeds, back to back.

And as with most things in life, timing is everything.

This is how my Wednesday went:
1. Threw my back out building cabinets for my Baja cabin.
2. Sliced my right index finger tip a 1/4" deep on the sharp edge of a sheet of melamine.
3. Had an adjustment by the chiropractor at 2:00pm.
4. After the rack stretching, went to the grocery to get stuff for a beef burgundy dish my wife wanted to try. On opening the truck door in my driveway, the bottle of Hearty Burgundy rolled out a broke.
5. Drove back for another bottle.
6. When I got home, my wife said (and I'm not making this up) "Where's the beef?"
7. Drove back to the store and asked the checker if they found the 4 lbs of top sirloin I had trimmed and sliced by the store butcher but left at the check-out stand and they they did, thank goodness.
8. At 4:57pm turned on the game and my wife and son immediately grabbed the remote and changed the channel to the Sacramento Kings opener vs the Timberwolves. WTF???? Sorry dad, we've been waiting all year for the NBA and we have to watch the King's opener.
9. Got them to agree to switch to baseball at time outs and commercials so I never got to see a single run scored until the King's game was over and I saw the last two innings.
10. King's won and the Giant's won. Had three glasses of Gallo HB, took a whole Vicadin for back pain and went to bed. Slept well fur sure.

Martyman - 10-28-2010 at 08:30 AM

Went to the game last night with my 22 year old son. The home run landed about 15 feet over our heads. The Giants were so clutch! This is not my old Giants! I'm a little sore from all the high fives and my kid hugging and punching me.
Did you check out Tony Bennett? I Left My Heart In San Francisco and God Bless America. He tore it up!
It makes it easier to stick with my prediction...Giants in five!

durrelllrobert - 10-28-2010 at 08:34 AM

11 to 7? all the "experts" predicted a low scoring game because both sides were starting with their "best" pitchers. :O

Hook - 10-28-2010 at 09:24 AM

Still sticking with Texas in 5 or 6.

Must they must win this game tonight.

Skipjack Joe - 10-28-2010 at 01:14 PM

I agree. Texas must win tonight.

On the other hand the Giants must win tonight to capitalize on Lee's bad outing. Otherwise, they're almost back to square one.

The Rangers were outcoached yesterday. They should've pulled Lee out earlier. And Guerrero Negro was a real liability out there in right field. The Giants, on the other hand, had the good sense to not let Sandoval out into the infield.

Looks like another good nights rest. What the heck happened to the Rangers bullpen??

Hook - 10-28-2010 at 08:23 PM

This appears to be the nature of the Ranger's bullpen. They were scuffed up a bit in the Yankee series, too.

If the Rangers hope to avoid having to use them in crucial situations, they'd better start scoring runs earlier in the game.

Anything less than a sweep by the Rangers in Texas give the Series to the Giants.

Looking more like Giants in 6 now................

Another example of bad management.

Instead of applying a turniquet in the 8th inning, he just let the wound bleed. At least he removed Guerrero from the outfield - one game too late.

Lets see what the Rangers are made of. The next couple of games should tell.

Marc - 10-29-2010 at 05:01 AM

I have just returned from China and while there my daughter kept me up to date on the playoffs and the first game via texting from the stadium. I actually watched part of one of the playoff games in Bejing broadcast in Chinese! Go Giants!!

Parts of China remind me of Mexico. (not Baja) I may go into that here later.

Skipjack Joe - 10-31-2010 at 09:39 PM

Don't know if you're referring to me - I was pursuing german browns with a flyrod this weekend. And they were accomodating.

We were able to pick up all of the action at the bottom of Stanislaus canyon. Sanchez clearly imploded and may not pitch again in the series I would think. Despite a starter that lasted only 2 innings the Giants only lost by 2 runs.

I thought tonight's game would be pivotal because Lee's probably going to take the next one and, had they lost, that would have swung the momentum completely.

But now it's pretty much over.

The Rangers completely shut down on 2 of the 4 games. Who could have expected that from those fearsome hitters, eh Hook?

Hitter's ballpark? No problem.

Umm...not really. i just have a life and only get on line when I'm at work (like now). Those great ranger hitters? The double Bush appearance is a definate jinx. It's not over til it's over but...

Yeah, finally, 50 years later, they figure it out.

The radio guys are asking themselves how is it that these kids are going to accomplish what Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, and Juan Marichal couldn't do.

Every kid in LA knew the answer: pitching is 90% of the game.

After a series like this you wonder why the great hitters are so venerated.
