It's official ...gasoline in Puertecitos

Yes...I said it's opening.
Again...talking to the owner of Camp Puertecitos...I asked her why the hill that gas station is never opened. Well......they do sell gas out of cans. One must ask for it at station or camp.

However.....
There was a lot of activity going on at the service station. Pumps uncovered, concrete being cleaned, office being washed down...electricians working...and a guy in a uniform! So being a nosy sort of of guy I am...I asked what was going on. An inspection team was showing up for a "finale inspection".....to be followed within a few days of gasoline deliveries. Holy Cr-p! I saw the white fancy inspections truck, inspector with his white fancy shop coat on. Looks to be...the information given to me is more that just bull. I've been knocking this service station for years as a joke of the town.

ADDED ON LATE:
Forgot to say that the service attendee is not there from 2pm to 4pm every day. Also....Tuesdays......the place is closed. However....just drive into the camp and ask for help. I am sure you'll get gas.

Too bad for more business, it isn't located on the highway... Requires driving the side road 'a mile' into town.

I understand the seņora who owns the resort not wanting to have a highway run through 'her town', but wouldn't the locals who live outside of her land benefit so much more if it did?

...she made a very good point to me about the highway route. Once you pass the stop sign in town...the road route goes very close to the bay. I wouldnt want trucks all day and night going thru either.....some of these homes there (and the camp) would had been a few hundred feet (a few homes....50 ft!) from a major highway. She knew the history of the truck travels when she was very young, living there with here Papa

I love that four lane highway from the cut of to SF. Someone had high hipes for that place at one point.

Right, it was first paved starting in the late 1980's to early 1990's, but so thin that it was badly potholed and again mostly 'unpaved' by 1998. It was miserable to drive in 2005.

This pavement was over a graded roadbed built in 1982-1983. Which replaced the original road between San Felipe and Puertecitos that stayed inland, passing through the sulfur mine area. That road dates from the mid 1950's.

Re-paving began in the early 2000's and once again reached Puertecitos about the first part of 2007. The newer, wider road on south of Puertecitos soon began, and after 3 years has advanced 20 miles over the most difficult type of terrain.

Well, for one I have been going to Baja for 45 years... and the history of Baja (including recent history) is interesting to me. I have quite a collection of maps and book.. plus I have drawn maps and written Baja guides in the past... It is just fun for me! :biggrin:

Okay, I have 14 scanned and cropped images from the 1963 to 2007 AAA (Auto Club of So Calif) maps of the San Felipe to El Huerfanito or Gonzaga area.

I think it best if I open a new thread for them, and will put a link here to them.:cool:

David and I beat you to this with photos and stuff a couple years ago--How do I know?? I live there .

The gas the station is being set up to open with a continuous flow of gas....****everyday*****. It is currently and has been historically a unreliably site for gas.....closed more than opened.

Not a redo on the concrete...the whole place is being /was upgraded...cleaned up for the expected inspection team from Premex (they showed up as I was there) to certify the station for full time service.

How do I know? Well....had dinner with your landlord with a long conversation about the camp......oh...she owns that station too :P

I gotten a lot of U2's and emails to me...thanking me for the great info that I supply from each trip I take from SF to BoLA. I have more than than just a home in San Felipe....so I do get around a little down there.

Why do you have to come on board and shoot negative remarks? My Mum used to say......."you can catch more flies with honey...than vinegar".



I will be there in March.....why dont we have soda together and talk Baja? That's an invite Sir.

Before the 'new' Pemex (which was built many years ago), the station (with real pumps) was on the other side of the road... Consistant supply of fuel and regular daily hours of operation would indeed be something new!
