Why Más ?

Santiago - 11-7-2010 at 11:08 AM

Why is the accent on the 'a' when it's only a one syllable word?

Why sí, té, él, etc? There is a reason. They are words different from si, te, el. Mas = pero, aunque.

They want to take every precaution that the word doesn't resemble this guy's name:

Extra emphasis is given to the /a/ sound in the word más in relation to other words in the sentence. It's almost as if the word Más is said at a louder volume than the word cervesa in "Más cervesa."

Heh, your right, of course, I should of looked it up:
Más = more (adjective)
Mas = but (conjuction)

mas = plus (as in the arithmatic operation)

How expensive is an all-Spanish dictionary in México? BTW, why is the name of the country accented?

Tano - 11-9-2010 at 01:42 PM

Right.

Accents are rather problematic in Spanish. That’s why my first question was a rhetorical one.
