Do the cartels have stingers now?

sanquintinsince73 - 11-9-2010 at 12:53 PM

If NORAD really does not know anything about this, that worries me.

DanO - 11-9-2010 at 01:59 PM

This kinda reminds me of the L. Ron Hubbard/Islas Coronados incident.

SoCal-Bob - 11-9-2010 at 02:01 PM

From LA Times:
Quote:

Military and aviation officials said Tuesday they don't know who may have launched a mysterious object spotted in the sky late Monday off the Southern California coast, but noted that whatever the projectile was, it did not pose a threat to national security.

A KCBS news helicopter spotted what appeared to be a missile traveling through the sky northwest of Catalina Island, about 35 miles west of Los Angeles.

Video posted online by the television station showed a luminous point hurtling through the sky followed by a long contrail.

Officials with the Defense Department, the Navy and the Air Force said they did not have any details on the object or its launch site. Pentagon officials said that initial indications were that the military was not involved.

"We are aware of the unexplained contrail reported off the coast of Southern California yesterday evening," according to a statement Tuesday from the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command, which operates the U.S. and Canadian missile warning system. "At this time, we are unable to provide specific details but we are working to determine the exact nature of this event.

"We can confirm that there is no indication of any threat to our nation and we will provide more information as it becomes available," the statement said.

The Federal Aviation Administration didn't approve any commercial space launches in the area Monday, spokesman Ian Gregor said Tuesday.

"We're looking into this," he said.

[Updated at 9:55 a.m.: Naval Base Ventura County spokeswoman Teri Reid said Tuesday that the contrail seen off the Southern California coast on Monday did not originate at Naval Air Station Point Mugu.

"It didn't happen here," she said. "There was no firing on the range yesterday."

Nor did it come from Vandenberg Air Force Base, officials there said, adding that the facility's last launch was to put a satellite into orbit on Friday.]

How can the military say they have no idea who launched this missile at the same time say it was no threat to national security?

Why hasn't anyone in the media asked where this missile went/landed?

why didn't the news helicopter (that conveniently was up in the air at a safe distance) that spotted it follow the missile's trail back to it's origin?

all rhetorical questions, i suppose.

Martyman firing off skyrockets?
Sorry I couldn't resist.....:tumble:

Sunman - 11-9-2010 at 02:35 PM

Lots of things get launched into the sky that you aren't meant to know about. National Security.

DanO - 11-9-2010 at 02:46 PM

The experts are saying it was probably a jet, not a missile.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/11/mystery-missile-is-p...

Nothing to see here folks, just move along . . . .

elgatoloco - 11-9-2010 at 04:13 PM

I agree that it was a jet contrail.
Friday night we were having an 86th birthday party for my dad in our backyard in SD and we watched the Delta rocket that was launched from Vandenburg streak across the sky. It was very impressive. It went straight up for 64 seconds then turned south in a 'dog leg' and we saw it for about 4+ minutes. Nice.

Probably wasn't him since there were no dogs in the area to scare.

sanquintinsince73 - 11-9-2010 at 04:19 PM

A jet does not leave a contrail like that even with after-burners.

For many years I have lived about 25 miles north of Vandenberg so have seen a number of launches. If this indeed had been a rocket launched from near Catalina Island people in West LA would have heard it and felt the vibration even if they didn't see a launch. When I lived in Avila Beach my little house would shake and rattle as though we were having an earthquake when a rocket was launched. The lack of comment about noise and vibration makes me think it was not a rocket.

No, missed that one.

Secret

Stickers - 11-9-2010 at 08:36 PM

We saw the Vandenburg launch the other night. It was after sunset so there was no lit-up contrail but could see the flame from the first stage as it flew out over the Pacific.

Comment: There have been secret missile launches ever since missiles were invented. We, the Russians and everyone else who makes military missiles launches them in secret. Duhhhh

So what's new?

The fact that it was launched so close to a populated area......but then again consider the populated area.

DENNIS - 11-10-2010 at 08:33 AM

Where did it go? Is it in orbit? Given the known trajectory and speed, where might it have come down?
Are we under attack in a scenario reminiscent of "The Mouse That Roared?"
Is Peter Sellers behind this?

I want answers.

Stickers - 11-10-2010 at 09:58 AM

The launch we watched (it was publicized) was an Italian satellite and I assume it made it to orbit.

The mystery launch a few days later might have been a target for an anti-missle missile down the Pacific Missile Range.

I think Slim Pickens pushed the wrong button and rode it into orbit while waving his cowboy hat.

Mystery Missile Musings

MrBillM - 11-10-2010 at 10:35 AM

I saw that Old Oriental Science guy who looks like an aged White-Haired Hippy who's always doing Discovery Channel segments and he said he thought it was probably a Jet and the conditions caused something of an optical illusion that he's seen before but he's probably nowhere near as smart as your average Nomadian Pontificator of speculation, so he's not to be believed.

On thing he said that mitigated against it being a military launch was that the direction was wrong.

But, what are his credentials, anyway ? I'd check with JoeBlow and Loco before I made a decision.

They're in on the KNOW.

Don't be so impatient. Everybody is in such a hurry today to hear or to scoop.... "The News". It's like we need instant gratification..rather than any actual facts.

Pompano - 11-10-2010 at 11:49 AM

Condensation trail from a jetliner. Optical effects due to sunset behind. Sunlight glinting off plane, etc. Mystery over.

Shades of Rosewell.

Pompano - 11-10-2010 at 11:50 AM

Unless.....?

It's all alien to me!

toneart - 11-10-2010 at 11:58 AM

:wow::rolleyes:

It's all in the Perspective

MrBillM - 11-11-2010 at 09:26 AM

Sort of like those optical illusions they publish in the Science Mags.

I saw a followup up with Old Hippie Sci Guy Kaka, Kuku, kuka ?
Oh yeah, Michio Kaku. He pointed out that, looking at the two-dimension photo, we "assume" that the contrail we're looking at has a near vertical trajectory, BUT if your assumption is that it is more horizontal, that looks right, too. The mind plays tricks. Additionally, the feature that mitigates AGAINST a Ballistic device of some sort (beyond the direction) is that the velocity of the object remains steady rather than accelerating, something not apparent in the still-photo, of course.

But, I'm sure that the groups who believe in encounters of the weird kind are positive it's an alien visitation and equally sure that the Conspiracy Buffs are sure it's some evil plot by the Mochas to achieve some dark end.

Given that the military launches stuff ALL the time and refuses to say why or what's on board for security reasons, you'd have to ask why this would have been any different if they'd done it ? But, the Conspiracy Illuminati don't bother with nagging little details when forming their great Global Paranoias.

One News Pontificator, bloated with the greatness of his own being, said sarcastically "Well, HOW can the Pentagon SAY that it posed NO Threat to the Homeland IF they claim to not even know WHAT it was " ? HAH !

To which the reporter replied, "Well, because it was OFF the West Coast over water with no vessels nearby and Traveling AWAY from any land".

OH.

They want us to believe that it was exhaust from a jetliner and that a certain angle, atmospherics, etc. it appeared to be a missile. Come on now, do I have stupid written all over my face? Baja maybe but not stupid.

Barry A. - 12-3-2010 at 03:48 PM

The report stated that NORAD was totally aware of "it", and it landed at sea. According to the report, NORAD was told to keep their yaps shut from higher up, presumably the Pres????

The "sub" was supposedly about 30-35 miles off shore, but nothing was known about it until the missile showed up screaming thru the air. Nice!!!

Who knows-------I sure don't.

I started saying it a few years ago, them Chinese are starting to worry me. They're eating our lunch economically and pretty soon they will rival us militarily. Hell, they already have a major mining operation in Irak and our troops provide security around the entire perimeter for free. Go figure.

elgatoloco - 12-3-2010 at 05:36 PM

It was US Airways Flight 808 from Honolulu to Hawaii. Same flight every day. Other photos showing similar contrail at same time on other days. Take off your tinfoil hat now.;)

Thanks Barry... best explanation yet. Can we get a second confirmation that there were no planes in that area at that time to debunk the claim it was the regular Phoenix to Honolulu jet? Sure looks like a missle launch and going up higher and not a jet flying away from the camera.

Taco de Baja - 12-4-2010 at 09:38 AM

Thanks Barry. Makes a lot of sense. I always though it was strange that a contrail would be glowing (very clear on the video), especially since the explanation was "Its a contrail coming towards the coast"

There are all sorts of microphones off the coast associated with the Pt Mugu Naval Weapons Station; although when I was out on San Nicolas in 1993, most of these listening devices were being used by biologists for tracking whales. I'll bet they are back listening for subs at the moment. :light: There may even be recordings of this incident, although with the almost silent nature of a modern nuke powered sub...who knows, all we may have is the launch sounds.

elgatoloco - 12-4-2010 at 05:11 PM

I was wrong! It was not US Air Flight 808.

It was UPS 902. Hawaii to Ontario.

http://contrailscience.com/

Has anyone seen Meg lately? I saw where someone heard from a high level unamed anonymous deep source that the missle was a result of "a dejected Meg Whitman deciding to leave Earth behind after spending $141 million of her fortune on a losing gubernatorial run".
