Do the cartels have stingers now?

Seems to me assumptions, the more provocative the better, are a pastime for some.

If NORAD really does not know anything about this, that worries me.

This kinda reminds me of the L. Ron Hubbard/Islas Coronados incident.

From LA Times:
Quote:

Military and aviation officials said Tuesday they don't know who may have launched a mysterious object spotted in the sky late Monday off the Southern California coast, but noted that whatever the projectile was, it did not pose a threat to national security.

A KCBS news helicopter spotted what appeared to be a missile traveling through the sky northwest of Catalina Island, about 35 miles west of Los Angeles.

Video posted online by the television station showed a luminous point hurtling through the sky followed by a long contrail.

Officials with the Defense Department, the Navy and the Air Force said they did not have any details on the object or its launch site. Pentagon officials said that initial indications were that the military was not involved.

"We are aware of the unexplained contrail reported off the coast of Southern California yesterday evening," according to a statement Tuesday from the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command, which operates the U.S. and Canadian missile warning system. "At this time, we are unable to provide specific details but we are working to determine the exact nature of this event.

"We can confirm that there is no indication of any threat to our nation and we will provide more information as it becomes available," the statement said.

The Federal Aviation Administration didn't approve any commercial space launches in the area Monday, spokesman Ian Gregor said Tuesday.

"We're looking into this," he said.

[Updated at 9:55 a.m.: Naval Base Ventura County spokeswoman Teri Reid said Tuesday that the contrail seen off the Southern California coast on Monday did not originate at Naval Air Station Point Mugu.

"It didn't happen here," she said. "There was no firing on the range yesterday."

Nor did it come from Vandenberg Air Force Base, officials there said, adding that the facility's last launch was to put a satellite into orbit on Friday.]

How can the military say they have no idea who launched this missile at the same time say it was no threat to national security?

Why hasn't anyone in the media asked where this missile went/landed?

why didn't the news helicopter (that conveniently was up in the air at a safe distance) that spotted it follow the missile's trail back to it's origin?

all rhetorical questions, i suppose.

Lots of things get launched into the sky that you aren't meant to know about. National Security.

The experts are saying it was probably a jet, not a missile.

Nothing to see here folks, just move along . . . .

I agree that it was a jet contrail.
Friday night we were having an 86th birthday party for my dad in our backyard in SD and we watched the Delta rocket that was launched from Vandenburg streak across the sky. It was very impressive. It went straight up for 64 seconds then turned south in a 'dog leg' and we saw it for about 4+ minutes. Nice.

Probably wasn't him since there were no dogs in the area to scare.

A jet does not leave a contrail like that even with after-burners.

For many years I have lived about 25 miles north of Vandenberg so have seen a number of launches. If this indeed had been a rocket launched from near Catalina Island people in West LA would have heard it and felt the vibration even if they didn't see a launch. When I lived in Avila Beach my little house would shake and rattle as though we were having an earthquake when a rocket was launched. The lack of comment about noise and vibration makes me think it was not a rocket.

Secret

We saw the Vandenburg launch the other night. It was after sunset so there was no lit-up contrail but could see the flame from the first stage as it flew out over the Pacific.

Comment: There have been secret missile launches ever since missiles were invented. We, the Russians and everyone else who makes military missiles launches them in secret. Duhhhh

So what's new?

The fact that it was launched so close to a populated area......but then again consider the populated area.
