July 2010: Flying into San Ignacio?

bryanmckenzie - 12-6-2010 at 12:21 AM

I'm not a pilot. Just a ground traveler. But I decided on a short detour to the international arrivals building at San Ignacio (SIY) International Airport a few months ago & just thought I'd share. :P

Main arrival & departure (and immigration/customs) building

Main runway

Just to prove I was there and the call sign

only the intrepid land there.
the weeds alone will trash your bird.
rocks and decomposing gravel are altogether another story.
i had to go there a few years ago and was lucky to get in and out without damage. some friends of mine recently were not so lucky. that story is on BBP tho.

Many years ago I think it was 70 or 71 it was the most Level Airstrip around and well taken care of.

Thanks for the Photos.

Where's TSA? Aren't they worried about travelers with explosive underwear in San Ignacio?

Exactly my point, Skeet. I was tempted to "off-road" the runway to the other end just to say I "drove" it. But that lil' bugger was a mess! You're better off taking you chances on landing on Highway 1 without a car wreck.

But a neat 1/2 Km side trip experience nonetheless. I think I'll stick to helicopters.

Yes: Most all of the Old Strips have been ruled out nowdays thanks to the Federales who went all over Baja and Dug holes etc to prevent the Drug Planes from landing and off loading.

Many of the strips that were close to the Beach on the Pacfic sides were kept in Fair order for a few of the americanos who would fly in and buy Lobster for a Buck a Pieceor on the other side a Bag of Shrimp for a Buck. Oh the Good old Days.!!

Here is how they ditched the runway at El Marmol (several of these are dug across the landing strip):

The El Marmol landing field alongside the road on Google Earth. Pushpin in the background is the townsite of El Marmol:,

The ditched El Arenoso runway, 28 miles from El Rosario at the turnoff to San Juan de Dios/ El Metate/ Los Martires:

the SI strip is very close to military road inspection station.

landed at SI strip a few years ago, the military met us a few moments after landing.
