Jumped in Bubba and took the old road to Palo Verde yesterday. Wow! It sure is dry here. Very little green. We need a 1/2" of rain badly here. There

You should check out the ruins near Boca de Magdalena sometime Russ... They are only 4.6 miles from Hwy. 1 (Km. 162/163) just north of the Palo Verde
airport road.
We didn't go into the canyon and see the other ruins at San Jose de Magdalena, but that would be neat perhaps for you as well?

Great map David! The road you show going into Punta Chivato is the road I took yesterday. The new road is quite a bit shorter and a hell of a lot
better condition. I did meet up with the caretaker at Dolfin Cove in his van on the old road so it is marginally passable in 2wheel drive. When I
first got here I use to go out to Rancho Perdido a lot and visit and then when I got a quad I explored all the other trails you show and others but
it's been years since I've been out that way. Maybe I can get another explorer to go out with me. Since the last two big hurricanes it will be a lot
different now. Friends that tried to go over the sierra last year from the rancho said the road was gone but you could still make it up the other road
to Magdalena and beyond.

The San Borjitas cave art is on Rancho San Baltizar (guide required) land. The Baja Adventure Book says it is 17 miles in. We only traveled 4.5 miles

aquduct built by the padres runs several miles up the canyon from these desert ruins...
The mystery is who built them (Jesuit or later) and why out in the desert instead of up in the oasis canyon where San Jose de Magdalena is today.
Some books call the church ruin by San Jose in the canyon the original visita and don't mention this desert site... other books mention the desert
site and not the canyon site.
Maps (include AAA and Almanac) mistakenly call these ruins 'Santa Maria Magdalena' after Arthur North applied that name when he camped here in 1905...
It is 'Magdalena' but not Santa Maria Magdalena, the proposed name for a mission shown as started far to the north on the Jesuit 1757 map. Both AAA
and Almanac place the ruins wrong... about 5 miles or more too far south. On my map above see the site listed as 'ruins' and the GPS is written in on
top of the map if you want to see it on Google Earth. The pila is easy to see... the ruins are on both sides of the road, just south of the big farm
clearing.

After my blunder with the Harris's hawk I googled the American Kestrel or sparrow hawk. They are really fun to watch and have some really cool
markings. Unfortunately this little guy was far away and the bright back ground played heck with the auto metering. I had to really play with the
enhancements to get this much of it. I'll do better as I learn more.
