Favorite free wifi locations?

 Pages:  1

BajaNomad - 12-23-2010 at 03:54 PM

What are currently your favorite free wifi locations along the peninsula - especially along Hwy 1?

Including, but not limited to: Tijuana, Ensenada, San Quintin, Guerrero Negro, Santa Rosalia (?), Mulege, Loreto, Cd. Constitucion, La Paz, Todos Santos (?), and Los Cabos.

David K - 12-23-2010 at 04:34 PM

Wifi? When I'm in Baja, I don't even wear a watch!!

But, if I did need Wifi, Baja Cactus, El Rosario... I think you just ask the front desk for the access code, yes?

Mulege

CasaManzana - 12-23-2010 at 04:42 PM

Just to the south of Mulege and just before the Pemex on HWY 1, La Palapa restaurant. The WiFi is free if you order food or drinks using your own 'puter. If you use their equipment then there is a fee.

kiterkip - 12-23-2010 at 04:43 PM

Ah Bueno! I just made my reservation at the Baja Cactus for my 1st night in the wildlands of Mexico (1-2-11)... need to Skype mi esposa as soon as I'm settled in.

One of my favorite stories from long-ago about traveling in Mexico alluded to the change in perspective regarding time... and having asked someone if they knew the time, to get a reply along the lines of "it's at least Thursday, might even be Friday".

I also prefer not to wear a watch when in Baja.

Yes, I believe so. Can sometimes help - even for me - to have a BajaNomad card handy to show them.

Bajahowodd - 12-23-2010 at 05:06 PM

You can get wifi at Jardines de Baja in San Quintin, Hotel Cowboy in GN, and Hacienda Suites in Loreto.

BajaNomad - 12-23-2010 at 05:08 PM

Is the 5th Avenida Cafe still open on the corner of 5 de Mayo & Revolucion (across the street from the Plaza & Catedral) in La Paz?

Any other La Paz favorites?

Thanks!

backninedan - 12-23-2010 at 05:31 PM

In Loreto, Augies bar on the malecon offers free wifi and a fantastic view to boot.

BajaNomad - 12-23-2010 at 05:51 PM

Excellent info. Thank you.

I'm thinking of keeping a list compiled from answers here and posted on their own page... or, better yet, maybe we need a Baja Nomad Wiki for such things (various resource lists) ??

Just a thought....

BajaGringo - 12-23-2010 at 05:52 PM

I just discovered a new wifi spot in the San Quintin area a couple of days ago.

Tazz Pizza

Located in Lazaro Card##as near the south side of town on the east side of the road. Great pizza too!

I think that would be a great idea Doug!

DENNIS - 12-23-2010 at 05:54 PM

Out here there a couple of locations that I know of.....around the Fire Station at La Joya and at the new Brewery restaurant out on the Punta Banda spit by the defunct hotel.
The fire station has no security on it and the restaurant will give you the code on request.

DENNIS - 12-23-2010 at 05:57 PM

We need a few of these out there.

Does Anthony's have wifi? ;D

shari - 12-23-2010 at 07:04 PM

Cowboy Hotel in GN...the wifi saved us when Sirenita & stayed there for 5 days when she had Izaak. Anyone with a magic jack should know how great it works to just plug the hotel phone into your MJ and yap yap yap the night away with your pals and family....ya might get some salsa on your keyboard if you are chowing the yummy tacos mixtos in the taqueriea restaurant.

Don't know if the range is different (probably not much if at all), but this item's a fraction of the price - for a vendor in Oceanside, CA:

There's a coffee/pastery cafe as you enter La Paz from the north on the inland side of Hwy 1 that not only has free internet, but in previousl years allowed free calls to the US and Canada

Here's my baja clock.

Poco Cielo in La Mision offers free wifi along with good food and ocean view.

Most of the tourist section of downtown Ensenada has wifi, but, Mi Kaza in downtown Ensenada(across from the "heads"/on Riveroll between Costero and Lopez Mateos) adds an authentic Mexican breakfast.

My house on Punta Banda offers free wifi, Pacifico and red wine(currently working on a case of '07 Norton Barrel Select Cab). But, you will need the Nomad secret handshake, Nomad membership card or not wear a watch for entry. Salud.

Any knowledge of Wifi at:

Afrodita Grill
Carr. Transp. KM 143 (Highway 1)
Vizcaino, BCS 23940

goldhuntress - 12-24-2010 at 10:12 AM

Ensenada at El Deli and also next door at the coffee house, I can't remember the name. They are located on the corner of Esquina Octava and Gastelum by the Mision Hotel.
Guerrero Negro at Don Gus and at the little coffee house as your coming into town on the left, again no name. That one is handy if you need to send an email or Skype someone using an iphone or smart phone after business hours because you can get the signal outside in the parking lot. Same at El Deli in Ensenada. They don't open until 8am so I'll do some calls/emails from outside while I wait for her to open.

BajaNomad - 12-24-2010 at 10:30 AM

Is anyone able to confirm free wifi for any of these Cabo San Lucas locations?:

- Marina Sol Resort lobby, pool, restaurant (Oasis Bar & Grill) areas.
- Cabo Coffee Company. Blvd. Marina.
- Cabo Coffee Company. Calle Hildago.
- Puerto Paraiso shopping mall.

bajadock - 12-24-2010 at 10:44 AM

Doug,
On your restaurant chain wifi request, I forgot about McD and D'Volada. The McD on Reforma at the Ensenada Walmart plaza is a handy wifi spot for southbound Nomads.

But, the coffee and staff are far superior 1/2 mile north of Wmart and on the other side(east) of Reforma at D'Volada coffee & smoothies. How could I forget D'Volada, introduced to me by Bajaguy? I did a fair amount of my house design using the wifi there in early 2007. Can confirm it's still available and I believe all D'Volada shops have wifi.

absinvestor - 12-24-2010 at 11:29 AM

Bajahowodd- are you sure about Jardines de Baja? Last Feb we stayed at Los Olivos and he said he thought Jardines had wi-fi. We took our laptop into Jardines and ordered lunch. Asked about wi-fi and they said they didn't have it. I believe the hotel (which is next door) has it but I think you have to stay there to get the code. Ron

I'm the wrong person to report in on this topic since I'm a hardwired desktop user....but the coffee shop was still open the when I went to the P.O. a week ago.;) But I can tell you absolutely positively for certain that the Exquisito coffee shop on the hwy between El Centenario & Chametla right in front of Campestre Marantha RV Park is still shooting out a free signal. Hope this helps.

don't forget The Shack in Mulege; great food, cold beer and free wifi.

oladulce - 12-24-2010 at 01:33 PM

In Ensenada "Caffeino" drive-thru coffee shop offers wi-fi. (I think that's the correct name?). It's In the parking lot between Home Depot and Walmart. They have outdoor tables and easy parking and access for larger rigs.

In Cd Constitución, there are 2 "Coffee Star" coffee houses, a "Caffeino", and a "Cafe V-something". All are on Hwy 1. I know for sure that the Coffee Star's have wi-fi, and the other 2 are decorated in a way that makes me think they also offer internet access.

Lots of choices in this tiny town that offer free WIFI:

La Esquina...great food, smoothies, happy hour in a beautiful setting

Cafelix... good coffees, tacos, burritos, happy hour, right on the main drag

Pura Vida... badly needed health food shop. Organic butters, beans, pastas, tortillas, tofu, tahini, etc and fantastic juices, smothies and raw treats. Set in a garden by the pool in El Molino Trailer park

I think it was George up there who mentioned the code being on a receipt at some place. That's a good idea since it could be changed from time to time. Otherwise, the parking lot around Caffeinos would eventually look like a drive-in movie.

What would be the most helpful for your list- no obligation free wi-fi spots, or free wi-fi with purchase places?

Here are a few hotels I've stayed in that offer "free" wi-fi for guests:

Hotel Oasis- Cd Constitución
Hotel Marina- La Paz
CasaBuena B & B- La Paz

I'm beginning to think that "FREE" is only on request for customers in most cases.
The fire department in La Joya is an exception.

Frankly, they need a PR firm for more than just that!

I was wondering that since Doug's list mentioned "show card" at Baja Cactus, if that implies they charge for wifi for customers other than Nomads? Would seem they could share the PR fee with Rice & Beans.:lol:

Baja Cactus has wifi available/included for guests of the hotel. However, even if you're just passing through El Rosario (and not staying at BajaCactus), and want to check email - make a Skype call - whatever.... if you stop in and show your BajaNomad card, access will be provided gratis.

BajaNomad - 12-26-2010 at 10:39 PM

While there will obviously be exceptions, many "free" wifi hotspots provided in a public way are from a business (or businesses) offering this as a benefit of doing business with them.

In fact, in parts of the USA, people are getting arrested for not buying something:

Guests/visitors can use Vonage in our office at no charge. Ditto for wifi use. First installed Vonage in 2000 - when downtown CSL had just begun receiving DSL .. used to email back/forth w/Jeff founder with issues. Boy has that company grown!

Have used the Serenidad Hotel service many times (while eating in Dinning room).. Even made phone calls with my majic jack while Don Johnson was sitting asking about the phone service, and watching my phone ring back with incoming calls..

You can take a laptop and an MJ phone to a hotspot and it works?

not baja, but just for comparision: the Dreams Resort n Huatulco charges guest that pay $200/ night $10/ hour fo WiFi connection :fire:

DENNIS - 12-27-2010 at 09:38 AM

Wonder if you can buy a code reader to bypass these exorbitant charges? Lemme go dig around and see what I can find.
Anybody have an idea?

That is not uncommon. The major resorts figure that since you're able to pay mucho dinero to stay there, you will not complain about the extra charge. Considering that these self same places have a long history of exorbitant telephone charges, who would be surprised?

IN LA BOCANA, BCS: add our front porch to the list .... we offer free wifi to anyone who comes over ...

This Just In...

Bajahowodd - 12-27-2010 at 05:21 PM

According to mi amigo David Flores of the Gringo Gazette, the following in Cabo offer wifi:

Baja Cantina both on the marina and on Medano Beach

Tiki Bar on the marina

Solomon's Landing on the marina

Captain Tony's on the marina.

Sensing a pattern here in that all of these businesses are close to each other and vying for the same customers.

In addition, David tells me that the Hard Rock Cabo also provides free wifi to customers.

MitchMan - 12-28-2010 at 09:22 AM

FWIW, in Italy, I was charged $5 euros ($7 USD) for 1/2 hour on the hotel lobby's public PC for internet access.

Shari in Bahia Asuncion does the same.

Restaurant Playa Buenaventura in Concepcion Bay also offers free wifi.

mulegemichael - 12-30-2010 at 08:27 AM

our front porch here in mulege also offers free wifi...and it comes with a cold pacifico!

BajaGringo - 4-8-2011 at 07:12 PM

The Restaurant-Bar Quintin in San Quintin now offers free wifi to its customers. Located on the west side of the highway, just north of the bridge. Ask Miguel or any of his friendly staff for the password...

MitchMan - 4-9-2011 at 07:43 AM

In La Paz, Cafenio's coffee shop on the malecon about 4 doors south of the corner of 16 de septiembre and the malecon. It's a small open plaza modern little coffee shop with a perfect unfettered view of the bay and tons of electrical outlets for laptop hookups. Perfect. I spend a couple of hours there almost every day I am in La Paz. When I leave, I usually go next door to the open air bar and have a margarita or two, use their free internet or watch their flat screen TV also.

Wasting time in Baja is one of life's greatest pleasures and rewards. Free internet access is an additional perk.

BajaGringo - 4-9-2011 at 08:30 PM

It would really be great if we could figure out how to sort all these wifi spots out into an interactive map / database...

irenemm - 4-9-2011 at 09:54 PM

We have free wifi also. It can be gotten in some parts of the RV Park also.
We are working on getting it in all of the park and the rooms.
If you don't have a computer you can use our.
Drive safe and enjoy the adventure.

monoloco - 4-10-2011 at 05:53 AM

I hear that you can get a good signal from gatito in Willard Bay.

BajaBlanca - 4-10-2011 at 09:30 AM

@ BajaGringo - we have eaten in that bar quintin restaurant so many times ... now that I know they also have free wi-fi - another reason to go again.

tjBill - 4-10-2011 at 02:11 PM

Here's a map of Starbucks Locations in Baja since each cafe has wifi. Three in Tijuana, two in Mexicali and one in Ensenada. In Baja Sur, one in La Paz, two in Cabo San Lucas, one in San Jose del Cabo and one in Palmilla.

You are right longlegs.....there is free wifi at Cafe Esquisito at km - 11 between Chemetla and El Centenario. There is a computer to use if needed. BTW.....if anyone stops to use it or get some sort of refreshment, say hello to the proprietor Josef. Our Great - nephew. And he IS a great nephew!!

I don't have a daytime photo of the place but here is a night one from Christmas time.

This is what the sign looks like on the corner.

MitchMan - 4-10-2011 at 05:07 PM

Been there many times, fixtrauma. Nice people there, and, it's a nice coffee shop. Will say hi to Josef next time.

Bob H - 4-10-2011 at 05:38 PM

Audrey and I have traveled all over the world and so far every MacDonalds we've visited has free wi-fi. We just pull in to the parking lot and get online from our rental car!

It's as easy as that!

They just open their wifi spot at Molino Viejo Restaurant beautiful and quiet place to stop by.

They also have the new museum open with exclusive new photos of San Quintin at the 19th century.

Here is an interactive map tool.

This thread from 2007 discussed possibility of a Nomad interactive map.

Skipjack Joe - 6-9-2011 at 09:04 AM

Lots of wifi hot spots suggested here on this thread.

Only problem is that you need wifi connectivity to find out where to get the connectivity.:lol::lol:
