(All night drinking in Mex will soon be a thing of the past)…The Baja California law makers are changing the rules.

The state Diputados, or Congress have voted to put a cutoff time for the sale of alcohol. On a 20-2 vote, it was agreed the sale of alcohol would stop at 3:00 in the morning on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cut-off will be at 1:00 in the morning the rest of the week. They expect the law to take affect in three months. The reasoning behind the change is to try and reduce DUI’s and alcohol related assaults. The change is not new. It was tried years ago on an experimental basis. At that time all bars and restaurants had to stop selling alcohol at 2:00 in the morning, but rural bars could remain open 24 hours. City bars did not feel that was fair, and the new law did not extend past the trial period.

sanquintinsince73 - 12-24-2010 at 12:35 AM

They tried it before but the bars and restaurants in TJ's tourist areas fought it.

No drinking after 3 am???? Those liberal social engineers have removed another brick from our wall of freedoms.

dtutko1 - 12-24-2010 at 07:29 AM

I didn't even know there was a 3....am.

Taco de Baja - 12-24-2010 at 08:28 AM

Another hit to the tourism industry ...at least the college age tourists in the border zone.

DENNIS - 12-24-2010 at 08:48 AM

This "new" law is nothing new to Ensenada. It's been that way for a lot [I mean...a lot] of years. Even Sin Street closes down around 2 or 3. I thought the whole state was like this.

Lauriboats - 12-24-2010 at 09:55 AM

Probably not a bad thing.

You may want to contact the MCLU and see if they believe your wall is crumbling.

NoNoNo....the national sport is Hit 'n Run. Don't do that unless you're completely wasted. Then, it's OK.

I wonder if this law would have even been proposed a few years ago when Tijuana was teeming with college kids, and including those under 21?

I would also question the wisdom of a 3am weekend curfew. Is is safer for someone to head out into the dark of night, having been drinking for who knows how long? Or to leave in daylight?

woody with a view - 12-24-2010 at 02:56 PM

have you ever walked out of anywhere drunk at sunup, with a whole new day ahead of you?

just the thought makes me want to puke.....:barf:

If you're not drunk by 2 AM you're not trying hard enough

:barf:

bajatravelergeorge - 12-24-2010 at 04:40 PM

Oh great! Throw drunk people out on the street at 3:00am. Like thats going to cut down on crime! At least if I was super smashed, I could hang out in the bar until morning and there was less chance of getting rolled.

Woooosh - 12-24-2010 at 05:03 PM

My nephews rolled in the house at 6am this morning after all night out in some Rosarito karaoke bar- so it hasn't started yet.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

woody with a view - 12-24-2010 at 05:17 PM

there is a place called Lucy's in OB that opens at 6am. i never got it? where those people trying to stretch out the previous night or get an early start on the coming night?

and if you just gotta drink at 6am, wouldn't it be cheaper to do it at home? no wait, i hear that is classic drunken behavior, drinking alone. just ask George Thourogood.

Changing Times

MrBillM - 12-24-2010 at 06:07 PM

Some Traditions SHOULD be Sacred.

I developed my real appreciation of Mexico as a 13-year old touring the Bars and getting Drunk in Ensenada.

And, NOBODY in any of those Bars thought it odd.

woody with a view - 12-24-2010 at 06:12 PM

....and from then on she was so nice. Lord, she was lovey-dovey!!!!

When will the bars be allowed to re-open?:?:

chippy - 12-26-2010 at 09:43 AM

...and you know when I drink alone I prefer to be by myself....

Jeans, that is hilarious!

I remember when I lived in Miami (grew up there), but in the mid 70's you could order a c-cktail at a drive through! They would serve it up in a plastic cup and off you went!

Drive-Through and Drink Up

MrBillM - 12-26-2010 at 11:16 AM

Do they still have the Drive-Thrus in Arizona ?

I always thought it a bit odd that Arizona had mostly stricter Liquor Laws (than California), but had Drive-Thru Liquor stores everywhere. At the time (early 60s), Liquor couldn't be sold before NOON on Sunday. If you drove around town a little before Noon, you'd see cars lined up at every outlet waiting for the magic hour. AND, the Bars, of course.

Bajahowodd - 12-26-2010 at 01:25 PM

I used to frequent Drinkwaters in Scottsdale back in the day. However, whether they have a drive-thru or not, I'd bet that the vast majority of customers drive to the liquor store anyway. Still not allowed to have an open container on the premises.

It appears that DF is taking a different tack. Making it easier for residents to get stupid on Christmas and New Years.

Try buying a six-pack before 10AM in Ensenada? Let's get that repealed!

That's kill off idea

mcfez - 12-29-2010 at 12:48 PM

No drinking after 3 am?

Most Nightclubs in Mexico...the action dont start till 11:00 PM.
And then these clubs dont close till sunrise.

This 3 am stuff will affect the restaurants as will, and any other business tied to the Clubs.
