Alcohol (curfew) laws to change in Baja

http://kxoradio.com/news/local/317-alcohol-laws-to-change-in...

by George Gale
23 December 2010

(All night drinking in Mex will soon be a thing of the past)…The Baja California law makers are changing the rules.

The state Diputados, or Congress have voted to put a cutoff time for the sale of alcohol. On a 20-2 vote, it was agreed the sale of alcohol would stop at 3:00 in the morning on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cut-off will be at 1:00 in the morning the rest of the week. They expect the law to take affect in three months. The reasoning behind the change is to try and reduce DUI’s and alcohol related assaults. The change is not new. It was tried years ago on an experimental basis. At that time all bars and restaurants had to stop selling alcohol at 2:00 in the morning, but rural bars could remain open 24 hours. City bars did not feel that was fair, and the new law did not extend past the trial period.

They tried it before but the bars and restaurants in TJ's tourist areas fought it.

Another hit to the tourism industry ...at least the college age tourists in the border zone.

This "new" law is nothing new to Ensenada. It's been that way for a lot [I mean...a lot] of years. Even Sin Street closes down around 2 or 3. I thought the whole state was like this.

Probably not a bad thing.

NoNoNo....the national sport is Hit 'n Run. Don't do that unless you're completely wasted. Then, it's OK.

I wonder if this law would have even been proposed a few years ago when Tijuana was teeming with college kids, and including those under 21?

I would also question the wisdom of a 3am weekend curfew. Is is safer for someone to head out into the dark of night, having been drinking for who knows how long? Or to leave in daylight?

Oh great! Throw drunk people out on the street at 3:00am. Like thats going to cut down on crime! At least if I was super smashed, I could hang out in the bar until morning and there was less chance of getting rolled.

My nephews rolled in the house at 6am this morning after all night out in some Rosarito karaoke bar- so it hasn't started yet.

there is a place called Lucy's in OB that opens at 6am. i never got it? where those people trying to stretch out the previous night or get an early start on the coming night?

and if you just gotta drink at 6am, wouldn't it be cheaper to do it at home? no wait, i hear that is classic drunken behavior, drinking alone. just ask George Thourogood.

Changing Times

Some Traditions SHOULD be Sacred.

I developed my real appreciation of Mexico as a 13-year old touring the Bars and getting Drunk in Ensenada.

And, NOBODY in any of those Bars thought it odd.
