Our first "home" in Baja

mcfez - 1-23-2011 at 07:53 AM

We had just acquired the lot a few months earlier. Construction was to start soon, so I bought this tin box to have as temporary quarters. This "microwave box" as we later called it.....was home for two years. No showers inside...so we would have to drive down to Pete's Camp.

So I call this our "first Baja home".

What was yours ?

Then & Now?

capt. mike - 1-23-2011 at 08:08 AM

it took 2 years to build? where was this? = San Felipe? did you actually stay in it during summers? how did it end up, the home?

mcfez - 1-26-2011 at 08:02 AM

I could not even stay in the box during May! Sleeping on the beach was my cool answer. The old trailer was given to our Aussie neighbor...when in turn took camping....further down the road. He loved it! :?:

The house took forever to get done. Issues with getting the power hooked up (almost 18 months). We love the place. Intentionally kept small, very dense landscaping, outdoor kitchen, and a campsite!

campsite?

shari - 1-26-2011 at 09:12 AM

cute design...love the mision bell thingie and the oven...got any photos of it all done?

Older pics

mcfez - 1-26-2011 at 09:44 AM

These are 3-4 years old. I can find my 2010 CD :-(

What I call a "John Wayne" campsite. it has water, power, surrounded by dense foliage, the sandy lot is hardly visible now!. One thinks he is in the desolated desert.

The house, I designed that too. A simple to use / clean unit. Outdoor wash and kitchen. The layout of this house allows future add on s of three bedrooms if we wish. House is surrounded by shade trees as well as 24 trees surrounding the lot.

Will update a newer photo when the wife gets home tomorrow.

Was the outdoor brick oven worth the time and money and I assume it is wood fired? I have been researching several plans and considering one for myself. JH

Oh Yes!!!
From sweet potatoes to pizza.....I can bake just about anything. my favorite cooking fuel is dead ocotillo. What a kick!

I plan on taking down a few large boxes of Sugar Pine tree - pine cones for that extra smoky flavor. The cones are outstanding.

Practice baking potatoes till you learn how to control the heat in your new over ....I hate to see blacken ribs :-(

BajaBlanca - 1-26-2011 at 10:43 PM

Your house and San Felipe are both beautiful. We chose BOLA because a friend owns the house next door and advised us that the tide changes are not as extreme for launching the boat as they are in San Felipe. So we ended up going in on a partnership with a friend. We still have about 5 years before husband can retire and then we plan on spending more time getting to know Baja.

wessongroup - 1-27-2011 at 12:28 PM

mcfez ... just a question...

What kind of "breeze" ya get down your way... noted a bit of "flag form" on your trees in the front of the house ...

Really liked you first one... down to basic's.... and would appear you and yours were able to make out just fine...

Do many have the ability to use "swamp coolers" or are they ruled out due to water and power ... always thought they did a pretty good job in dry climates.. overall ... or do you get some of that humidity that some get down to the South a bit ..

David K - 1-27-2011 at 12:32 PM

Bahia de los Angeles is right in the center of so much and such great things to see and do in Baja!

See my 'Baja Tours' web page for photos of some of the area's sites...

Oh...we get breezes for sure. There is however very strong winds at times. Most folks build their outdoor sitting area on the south side of there house, so that the house itself offers some relief.

I however, have densely lined our property (240 x 600 'something") with Palo Verde trees and a few other species. These trees will keep the wind out, dust, and afternoon sun. The house has it's own set of surround trees for cooling. The interior of the lot is planted with over 100 of Cactus, Elephant trees and various other shrubs. I expect the house and the surrounding land to be 20% cooler in the summer.

We are on the grid now, and recently our Campos acquired water from the city's main. Before that.....limited options to cool down. Plant a few large trees surround your house (if you have someone to water twice a week), paint your house white (best sunlight reflection), foam the roof. The trees around a house is priceless! Good ref books on energy ideas for desert homes are avail at any decent on line book store.

Swap coolers....I may be dead wrong now....I dont think they work very well where there is high humility such as the Sea of Cortez.

You are most welcomed to visted our home down there to grab some ideas. On landscaping.....contact me and I be happy to draw out a design for your house....piped in water or not. Oh...and I'll charge you one bottle of Coke for these fine services

Got it! It is the trailer on the left behind the tent.....ghetto, I know, but it is our little ghetto.....
I would like to say it is a work in progress but, in actuality, it is very Mexican......completely stalled due to this crappy economy.
We love it, though.

Ghetto....buddy you are on the beach, make it what you want and enjoy your relaxation space!! I would live in a tent, box, under the stars, whatever ti takes to be in BOLA. It is so comforting and relaxing. When you break over the top and see the sea with the Ochre colored islands in the dynamic blue....well it still brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. I am so excited we will be there 26 days for a 10 day stay.....woot woot!

Where is your home located?

Can't wait to post to this thread....in August we will be driving our "first Baja home" down to Bahia Asuncion, where she will live out her days and we will be cozy until our little casita by the sea is built.
"She" is a 1967 Superior Motorcoach :0) and I will have to take a picture of her in our yard, and then again when she makes it to her retirement villa!!

CortezBluesie...:-)

I am down the road by the tower (off the highway in the edido). Campos Ocotilio

You at the outside bar or in the restaurant? I will be there in 6 weeks. Hey...the old cigar chomper still alive at the front office?

CortezBlue - 2-7-2011 at 08:27 AM

Normally after our 6 plus hour drive from Phoenix we stop at Pete's for some dinner. If it is nice, we are outside, otherwise we are indoors. Never go to the front office as I live just down the beach at PDO. If we have friends down we drive down the beach to party at pete's and then sneak home via the beach as well.

Here are the two methods:

There are two methods... One is direct onto Nomad from your PC files, using the 'Browse' button under the normal posting box... In that case you can only post one photo per post AND it MUST be UNDER 50 kb. in file size. Since this is smaller than most all photos you have on you PC, you need to make a duplicate file with the photo size REDUCED to under 50 kb.

*The BETTER way to show your photos is to hot link to them stored on another website... such as Photobucket.com. It is free (to a certain limit) and has an automatic resizing service... In this case, Nomad requests photos to not exceed 800 pixels in width.

On Photobucket, to upload from your PC,

1) click the red button 'Upload now'.

2) In the next window you see, at the bottom of the big box, in small blue letters, click: Customize your upload options

3) In the pop up see these choices (and more to resize to):
100x75
160x120
320x240
640x480
800x600
1024x768 ...
>>Pick 640x480 for most photos... this is the selection refered to as 'Large'.
>>Pick 800x600 for maps or max. detail images max. size to fit on 15" screens.

[note: this doesn't affect your photos on your PC, just sizes them for perfect message board viewing on any PC]

4) Select photos (press Select Photos button) from your PC to resize and store on Photobucket. You can have multiple files on Photobucket to organize them.

Now, to put on Nomad!

1) Place your mouse arrow over the photo (in your Photobucket album) you want and get a small pop up with some codes for linking them to various media.

See the one called 'IMG code'? Click your mouse on it to copy it... It will confirm 'copied'.

2) On the Nomad posting box, paste that code.

You can have text above or below the image link... have several images perhaps a dozen max... and then do a reply post to add more... so as to not have too many on a single frame.

The photo url begins with http:// and ends with .jpg (usually) and the IMG code puts your photos url between the tags

If your photo is already on a web site, you can click this icon located above where you type onto Nomad (not quick reply):
and just put in the image url, and the tags are automatically added on to show your photo here.

Woohoo!
We will keep the Bola place because we have some great friends there and that way we can meet in the middle when they travel down....

Is BOLA any cooler in summer compared to La Paz?

Thats the tops. White sandy beach and snoring hubby (?).

Hell...you can throw your rod and line out right to the surf. I am jealous! Very cool.

I seen a home that close to the water...the owner had fastened up a flag holder on their porch post....and there sat the fishing rod in it!

Seconds, etc.
