Keep An Eye Out For The Lost Finn!

BajaGeoff - 1-25-2011 at 11:31 AM

This is our new amigo Matias who hails from Finland. He showed up at the Baja Bound office two weeks ago and was in the process of planning the Mexico leg of his journey down into South America. I brought him down to the Dia de los Reyes event in Tijuana, which was his first time in Mexico, and he loved it. I gave him as much advice as I could and told him to visit Baja Nomad if he had any questions or needed guidance during the journey. This morning he crossed the border and is heading for Ensenada for a few days. He is going to get his Spot tracker enabled, so I will post updates as his journey progresses. You can also follow the journey on his website: Lost Finn

I forgot to mention....he will be riding solo on a Kawasaki KLR 650.....

BajaGeoff - 1-25-2011 at 05:12 PM

The first day of riding is complete.....the Lost Finn is in Ensenada!

I met Matias at the toy drive and he is a great guy! Geoff brought him along and he was a great hit with the kids.

If you see him please take the time to share your Baja fun.

Gracias,

Scot

Dunno if anyone else has encountered Europeans in Baja, but we've had the pleasure several times. Last time was a couple from Austria who had started at the tip of Argentina and were hellbent to make it up to Vancouver before flying home. They spent two years on motorcycles. We ran into them at San Ignacio Lagoon, where we shared a panga. What was most interesting to me about this couple was, although being from Austria, and speaking impeccable English to us, they made me feel oh so bad as they spoke impeccable Spanish to our hosts. Just seems to me all the more reason that US schools should spend more money and time teaching foreign languages.

LOST FIN SPOTTED IN PUNTA BANDA:

BajaGeoff - 1-26-2011 at 12:18 PM

Hehe. He may come through there....I told him to visit La Bufadora!

BajaGeoff - 1-31-2011 at 03:46 PM

The Lost Finn is on the move......here is his ride from yesterday where he averaged 6 mph. Definitely must have been some rough trails!

All dirt roads in Baja go to someplace really cool... I wish I could live long enough to drive them all! Howard Gulick did in the 1950's and early 1960's and wrote the Lower California Guidebook (with historian Peter Gerhard)... Naturally, there were fewer roads then... but no paved ones connecting the north and south ends.

BajaGeoff - 2-1-2011 at 10:16 AM

I honestly have no idea what is out there. Suffice to say, Matias said he was looking forward to riding the roughest trails he could find. I don't think Baja is going to disappoint!

BajaGeoff - 2-2-2011 at 01:40 PM

As of about 10 minutes ago.....Matias was out in the boonies east of Colonet!

BajaGeoff - 2-2-2011 at 03:02 PM

Watching his progress he is definitely heading out to Mikes Sky Ranch!

BajaGeoff - 2-3-2011 at 12:43 PM

On his way to San Felipe now.....

David K - 2-3-2011 at 03:24 PM

Cool...

BajaGeoff - 2-3-2011 at 03:32 PM

He just arrived in San Felipe! It must have been a pretty cold ride considering this wind and low temps we are having.

mcfez - 2-3-2011 at 04:07 PM

This route is all dirt...back country to San Felipe?

805gregg - 2-3-2011 at 07:04 PM

He's lost. Didn't you give him a map?

lostfinn - 2-4-2011 at 12:22 PM

Howdy to you all!

Yep, first of all, Geoff thanks for everything. You guys are awesome... So are the rides down here too! :)

The small half a day loop in Ensenada used to be part of the Baja 1000 course and had some nasty terrain to deal with, loved it all the way, don't go there for wine though. And you better have your 4WD set to LOW. :)

All the riding so far has been more or less off road and sometimes not even haven't have a single trail to follow, just the old map that I have, it's just perfect. The ride to Mikes via Coyote trail was the hardest trail I've ever ridden, man it was scary, don't go there with fully packed dual purpose bike. :P

After Mike's the road was just perfect, hauling ass about 40-60 mph on perfect dirt is so much fun. Camped on the beach here in San Felipe and now heading down for a little bit and camp before starting to Los Angeles via Coco's Corner.

Take care you all,

Yours,
M

Sounds like you had a great adventure. Glad you made it safe and sound.

BajaGeoff - 2-4-2011 at 03:58 PM

Yeah Matias! Good to hear from you!

BajaGeoff - 2-4-2011 at 04:01 PM

I just checked his Spot and he is almost to Gonzaga Bay....that is such a beautiful stretch of coastline!

BajaGeoff - 2-7-2011 at 10:25 AM

Now at Bahia de Los Angeles....

BajaGeoff - 2-7-2011 at 02:30 PM

The Lost Finn is officially in Baja Sur....he just arrived in Guerrero Negro.

BajaGeoff - 2-8-2011 at 05:11 PM

Matias just rolled in to Bahia Asuncion....any signs of him Shari?

David K - 2-8-2011 at 08:01 PM

Thanks Geoff... Boy he sure moves across Baja a lot faster than Mike and Don-Kay!!!

BajaGeoff - 2-9-2011 at 04:13 PM

No doubt DK! He is already on the other side of the peninsula in Mulege now!

BajaGeoff - 2-11-2011 at 04:03 PM

Looks like Matias is heading toward Scorpion Bay...the hard way.

David K - 2-11-2011 at 08:12 PM

Cool!!! I want to drive that road and also try and get photographs of the Guadalupe mission visita ruins of San Miguel (a visita is a satellite church of a mission) which is passed by along that road.

lostfinn - 2-14-2011 at 04:32 PM

Yep,

It's been once in a lifetime ride through Baja California all the way to La Paz, the scenery has been just breath taking.... just like the roads too (literally). :)

...well, there has been a little set back, my host here in La Paz bailed and went to mexico city, so spending a night in a hotel... if you guys know someone with whom I could hook up down here, let me know. Other than that and a few flats, all has been as good as one could have hoped for. :)

Love & peace,
Matias

BajaGeoff - 2-14-2011 at 05:34 PM

Hola Seņor!

Hopefully some of the La Paz Nomads read this thread and can send you a U2U message and help out . Glad you are enjoying the trip so far. Was there any surf getting in at Scorpion Bay? It's a little early in the season for south swells, but I know we had a little south in the water the last few days.

Hi Matias,

Perhaps begin a thread in the Questions and Answers or Baja Acommodations forum here on Nomad... 'Lost Finn seeks La Paz room for __ nights' ??

Thanks for sharing your trip with us!!!

[Edited on 2-15-2011 by David K]

'Lost Finn seeks La Paz room fo xx nights' ??

mcfez - 2-14-2011 at 07:36 PM

Holly cow David!

I want a room too that is XX nights

David K - 2-14-2011 at 07:46 PM

Wow Deno... what are you drinking? Delta water?:lol:

I changed the xx to __ so there is no confusion about the term 'blank nights'... as in 'fill in the blank'.

Have a nice night amigo!

BajaGeoff - 2-14-2011 at 08:26 PM

:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Good stuff amigos.....laughing heartily at the moment!

lostfinn - 2-14-2011 at 08:45 PM

You guys are cracking me up... Well, ended up in a cheap hotel downtown and first thing I met was two german girls... so I'm not going anywhere... until they leave tomorrow evening. :P

Yep, the the mexicans have the dos equis dialed down, so it's just a beer night, nothing more naughty... sadly. :)

BajaGeoff - 2-16-2011 at 04:34 PM

Here is the final ride day into La Paz:

BajaGeoff - 2-18-2011 at 05:38 PM

I stand corrected......apparently he can't get enough of the riding in Baja! Matias is on the move again....now near Los Barriles!

lostfinn - 2-18-2011 at 09:26 PM

Yep,

Doing a little loop before leaving to the mainland... All good. La Paz was so much fun... LostFinn got XX nights at La Paz. :)

BajaBlanca - 2-18-2011 at 09:30 PM

wow....mattias, your trip sounds really interesting but really hard too. if i had seen this thread earlier, I could have gotten you a place in la paz !

if you want to go to la bocana, baja sur, near the pacific ocean - 10 miles north of punta abreojos, let me know and even tho' we are not there we can get you set up for XX days :tumble:

have a wonderful and safe trip.

BajaGeoff - 2-22-2011 at 04:23 PM

Completing the La Paz loop.....

BajaNomad - 2-22-2011 at 11:00 PM

Report a few minutes ago was that his spare gas can caught fire while he was riding today, He's okay though.

BajaGeoff - 2-23-2011 at 02:28 PM

Yeah....I saw his post late last night on Facebook. Pretty scary stuff....thankfully he is OK and the bike only had minor damage.

goldhuntress - 2-23-2011 at 03:39 PM

Maybe he should be The Lucky Finn:lol: Safe travels!!
