RATTLESS RATTLESNAKES ON ISLA CATALANA

 Pages:  1

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 10:14 AM

If anyone has been to Isla Sta Catalana South of Loreto and observed the small Snakes please let me know.

Oh! so many years ago, that is before all the "Specie" Nuts were loose in the States, I took 3 of the small Rattless Snakes and planted them in a Den near Sweetwater Texas, took 3 small Black Diamond s from that Den and planted them on Catalana near some Rattlelss Snakes.

I have examined both Types of these Snakes up until 2000, and to this date have not seen any example of the larger Snakes becoming Rattleless/nor the small growing Rattles.

I would appreciate if anyone sees these snakes on the Island please let me know the details.

Skeet/Loreto

Osprey - 5-2-2011 at 10:22 AM

That island and all those snakes are very well protected now and I'd be surprised if anybody on this board would be granted permission to visit the island without scientific credentials and reasons to explore or investigate.

Skeet, you are perhaps the most endangered kind of wildlife around -- and you are perhaps the most dangerous kind as well. Not a very good idea for well intentioned cowboys to mix and match with rare anythings anywhere.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 10:39 AM

Osprey:

Sorry, I did not see any Policemen guarding the Island the last time {Date Witheld} i had some very good Lobster from the Rocks on the Northwest side of the island.

Many years ago. Desert evenings, lots of single and two-button cascabeles on the east side sand beach. Nature evolves things for brutal and unforgiving reasons. I'd hate to think I was a miniature John Hammond.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 11:19 AM

There have been several Reports of Rattless Snakes in Arizona and on the Coast of Texas., From the photos I have seen I cannot make a judgement as to their possible connection with any in Baja.

It might be that under certain Atmosphere Conditions that certain Snakes will change such as not developing a Rattler so that Birds cannot hear and be warned.

diarroyo It also may be that Cowards do not take Risk, but prefer to set aside and make Dumb Statements.

Osprey - 5-2-2011 at 11:32 AM

Skeeter, rattlers use the rattles to warn things that might harm or kill them of their presence. Over millions of years of isolation they might have learned those they share the island with are not to be feared and adult birds cannot be food because of their size. Snakes have a simple switch: A and E or E and E. Attack and Eat or Evade and Escape. Don't know why you can't devine that, Texas style if you never bothered to do any schoolhousin of your own about your scaly brothers where you lived, here and in Texas.

Bajamatic - 5-2-2011 at 11:59 AM

"diarroyo It also may be that Cowards do not take Risk, but prefer to set aside and make Dumb Statements."

WOW. Dumb statements don't lead to this as often as dumb actions taken by people willing to risk life or livelihood (usually not their own) who don't think before they act.

simple minded people gamble with life without thinking first.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 12:11 PM

Osprey;
I di and have looked into from a "Living wirh Snakes Idea". On the place I was rasied there is still one of the largest, if not the Largest Rattlesnak Den Known.

I observed these snakes on a daily basis and when at Catalana I would do the same for several days. Also collected snakes East of Constitution where some stories indicated that the Snakes would not Rattle before Striking.

Size does not count{My beleif} Have you ever been on a Horse that has been bitten by a Rattler?? I have two times! Once with a Mule.
I was ;plowing near the Creek one Day with a Team of Mules when a Fair size Rattler came from about 15 feet out of the weeds to get ole Jake.

Osprey, sometimes these so-called experts on a Specie does their study inside a Lab not out in the open. I question their results.

When I transplanted the Snakes I had in mind to see if possible they would transfer a gene from one to the other. The photos that I have seen of the Texas Rattless snakes is very close in color but much larger.

drarroyo - 5-2-2011 at 01:00 PM

yyea. You're an intellectual powerhouse.
Why don't you explain to us why it is that your god made these rattleless snakes. Was it working on horse tails and snakes on the same day??:lol::lol: such a busy god!

Osprey - 5-2-2011 at 01:18 PM

Skeet, let's hear your lecture on the Lyre snake. Lots of those in Baja. They are venemous, have no rattle. The Mexican name for the Lyre snake is Sordo. Tell us why they call it the "Deaf" snake.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 01:18 PM

In my 80 years of life, I have always had an interest in "The Reason behing Actions of Humans and Animals"'.

When I waqs in Japn for awhile during the Korean War, I would take a bicycle and go out into the Countside and talk to and observe the People and their actions.
One action, that of cutting their right hand off if caught for stealing was an example.

Later While working in Yosemite Natl. Park as a House Detective I caught several different kinds of people{Judge, Nuns, Preacher and supposedly good people stealing Curios from the Shops

Then later on while a Policeman /Investigator in Hollywood I became involed in a "Lis Renay" deal she was having with Dogs.

Then Later in South Central LA. working with a Mulatto Partner I observed some very different Human actions between Men and Women.

Then to East La where I observed some very Strong Gang Life

could we be like RattleSnakes? You can observe on this Board and thread several individuals that are UNABLE to answer a question or respond to an inquiry with out some DIAPERHEADED COMMENT.

Is there anyone out there that has been to Isla Canalana and seen the snakes i am talking about??.

.

ElCap - 5-2-2011 at 01:22 PM

I hiked that island in spring of 2003, when we were able to anchor overnight during a calm weather window. Saw some really beautiful giant cordon and barrel cactus, but didn't see any rattleless rattlesnakes. But I'm pretty sure I heard one though . .

ursidae69 - 5-2-2011 at 01:30 PM

Hi Skeet,

here is some info on the endemic snake on Isla Catalina: http://www.sdnhm.org/fieldguide/herps/crot-cat.html

Can you tell me where in Texas you released these snakes? I'd like to let the appropriate folks know there that an endangered non-native species was released so they can take the necessary steps to remove them. I'm forwarding the thread.

Just a FYI on your premise, adaptation and evolution take a little longer than what you are thinking.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 01:35 PM

El Cap: Thanks for the report. When I camped there I usually was on the West side at the small Sand Beach. Just off the beach and up a small arroyo I could locate several small dens and observe .

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 01:41 PM

Hey 69!
I did notreleae any endangered Specie!!
This was before any of those Nuts had created that bunch of Poop!

I would not tell anybody where I put the Snakes as I want to keep observing them and I have a Grand son that is real interested and will protect them from the "Nuts".
I can just see some of those Nuts stomping along and gettin Bit 15 times before they ever get to the Den!!

No. Thanks for your Offer.. All my Photos and Papers are protected with a 30/30 Winchester Saddle Gun.

Cypress - 5-2-2011 at 01:55 PM

Now if you want to talk about snakes, a cottonmouth is born with a bad attitude. They rattle their tails like a rattlesnake and will go out of their way to bite you.

DENNIS - 5-2-2011 at 01:58 PM

I've often felt that Skeet has done much more in his mente than on the ground. I hope this is one of those times.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 02:43 PM

Osprey: No! I do not know about that Snake only the Rattler.

Dennis> How about a 'Challenge" about my mente or ground??

I have said before that I do not Lie, Cheat, nor Steal/

Just for starters Dennis why not check out what I said about "Lis Renay" in Hollywood then after you have done an investigation callme to task??

Dennis. Have you ever hear about the "1948 Committee on Un-American Activities??
Find and read it. That is why I do not ever go to Santa Fe New Mexico!!!

That was about the Braceros singing that "Guadalajara" song day and night, wasn't it? White folks thought it was a call to rape the bosses daughter.
Sure....I know all about it.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 03:01 PM

No Dennis!
That was about the Communists/Socialist take over and running Santa Fe New mexico.

they still own and Run it.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 03:04 PM

Back to Snakes!

There was a Study done many years ago ,before the Endangered Specie Poop concerning the "Shedding' of the Snakes outter coating or Skin.

Does anyone on this Thread know "When and Where" this study??

I am interested in the reasoning of "Why does a Rattler "Shed" his Skin and obtain another rattle.??

No, Skeet. I didn't hear about that. Were they Braceros?

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 03:32 PM

No Dennis!!

They were from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and around.

All White and 21 Years of age. Can you even imagine those people beleiving that BS??

DENNIS - 5-2-2011 at 04:09 PM

Were they Pachucos? There were a lot of Pachucos in Los Angeles. Kinda hard to tell what color they were....big floppy hats, baggy clothes and all.
I'll bet that's what they were, all right. Pachucos.

This is all new to me, Skeeter. I do appreciate the history lesson.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 04:17 PM

Dennis: I will bet that you did not know that here was a Communist hdg. Office in Villa Constitution until about 10 years ago and that you do not know who was the Head of the Communist Party in La Paz, his position and his connection to Loreto.

Take a shot Dennis, see if you can come up with a photo or the Answers. Stop Talking and start Walking the Walk!!!

This is the kind of reckless, irresponsible flocking with nature that has resulted in Killer Bees, Pythons in the Everglades and may release Nile Crocodiles into the Amazon. When I lived on Cozumel, there were zero snakes. Then a movie company released Pythons instead of taking them with them when they finished filming. Now they have multiplied and are decimating the local wildlife.

Must have been them communists. Were any of them from New Mexico???

Osprey - 5-2-2011 at 04:58 PM

Skeeter, snakes shed their skins as they grow out of them -- imagine a big old rattler or gopher snake inside his baby skin and you'll get the idea. Knowing that, you can see that the animal sheds, grows out of the thing at the rate of growth of its specie and its particular growth rate vis a vis the amount and kinds of food it eats, the calories it uses over time to move about, mate, give birth or aestivate. So two rattlers of the same sub specie, the same age, could have different numbers of buttons because of these variables. In the zoo, should be about the same.

ursidae69 - 5-2-2011 at 05:07 PM

Skeet, it's been an interesting journey watching your mental capacities decline over the years. I actually believed this thread for a while today, but after thinking about it and thinking about all of your posts on this board the last 8 years, I realize you're just a crazy old coot. Not many like you left amigo. Keep thinking about those imaginary snakes that you transplanted and keep posting.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-2-2011 at 05:08 PM

Thanks Osprey:
I was aware of some of that infromation.
There is some indacation that in certain areas, the snakes only shred once every two years instead of every year. I am trying to verife some of that information.
I am also looking into any info on "Rabies' Rattlers. None have come up so far, just the Skunks.

Thanks again Osprey, but just look at the Nuts I have to go through to get some Honest Info.,, What a Life this new Generation must lead, I feel so sorry for them and their children.

Since I'm in a helpful mood, you should try to attend the Biology of Rattlesnakes symposium in July in Tucson, Skeet. Every rattlesnake researcher in the world will be there. I wish I could go, but I have a job to deal with. My Baja trip took all my time off until next year. You should go though, I'm serious.

I was wondering how long it would be until the self appointed preacher started calling people he doesn't even know "weak minded, commie, welfare" stuff . . . .

Quite entertaining, actually ~ in a sad sort of way....

Skeet, I dunno, but just maybe you outta try to sit quietly and actually read your Bible - carefully, with an open mind and heart . . . Some good stuff in there . . . like "God is Love" etc. . . . :saint:

Yaknow, there's even some stuff in there about snakes and vipers . . . . ! !

:!: A warning, though, as you might find some of it objectionable . . . because I seem to remember that God created all of those "specie" thingys on purpose, so that might well make God one of them "specie nuts" too . . .

;D

It is Awesome to have lived a Life of Adventure and to be able to Post it and get some lively discussion about it!

However this time my Interest was in and ongoing Situtaion from the past that is still going on.

It amazes me at the amount of so-called facts are related by todays Youngsters ,some who do not beleive all the Bull Puckey and then those that will check out the Past and try to understand.. We just did things different and depended on our own Labors instead of someone on the TV /Net. as it is today.

I will pay anyone a $100 for a Single Rattleless Snake from the Isla of Catalana.

I will Pay $5 a foot for all Mexican Rattlers Skin. Skin must be tanned in Avon "Skin so Soft" Product for 24 Hours.

Gramps is not playing with the full deck. (maybe some slack is in order)
Couple that with having to exist in the texas poohandle, and some clarity ensues.

Hold the snake behind his Head and use a glass to Milk the Venom from the Fangs, then cut the Fangs off at the Base. He will be safe then during Transport.

If you decide to go into Snake Catching full time you can buy a Snakecatcher in Sweetwater Texas for about $25.

Excellent Site and Photos Goat!

As a youngster living on the Farm in Seetwater, at one time there was a Kingsnake which had swalloed a good size Chicken, had gone into a small tree and got Stuck in the branches. We could not beleive that it could eat such a large Chicken. We left it alone until about 3 days, It became thinner and was able to leave. Most people beleived that Kingsnakes were good and did not kill them, Suppose to eat Rattlesnakes, but I have no proof of that.

Kind of like the "HornyToad" thing that if you kill one, your Cows will go Dry.

Skeeter, "Horny Toad", isn't that another field of your expertise.:?::?: :biggrin:

Oh Yeah! I believe the proper term is nekked

Van:

The Horny Toad is just about gone. Very few left up here in the Panhandle.

As a kid on the Farm we played with them all the time, never killing one, as the Folks back in those days really believed that if you killed one your Cows would go Dry.

"As a kid on the Farm we played with them all the time, never killing one, as the Folks back in those days really believed that if you killed one your Cows would go Dry."

So let me get this straight, you never killed a frog because you believed an old wives tale, but you'll capture and maim a species from a protected environment (or pay someone else to) that qualified professionals deem worthy of protection for the survival of the species?

Just when you thought it couldn't get better, it does.

ursidae69 - 5-4-2011 at 02:53 PM

This thread is like a train wreck, hard to not look.

The book David quoted is a good handy herp book for Baja and you can get it for only 20.95 at http://www.bajabooksandmaps.com/ A great deal! It is always in my truck on Baja trips. They also sell the definitive guide for reptiles and amphibians of Baja by Grismer, for all the hard-core naturalists out there.

CortezBlue - 5-4-2011 at 03:19 PM

Oh, a new oxy marooon

Maybe they should be called rattleless snakes??

Skeet/Loreto - 5-4-2011 at 03:39 PM

Matic:

I would never, never "Capture and Mame" a Specie>. What I did by removing and very carefully handling the snakes and putting them into another place was to see if there would be any cnages over the years.

Matic you must learn that many of these so-called Specie Nuts only have Book-learning and do not ever go out and live with their Specie.

And it was not a "Protected Enviorment". There was no such Wording /rules/regulations., it was a time which people used "Common Sense" not Group Govt Therpy.

However, if I could get a snake from the Island I could again plant it in my special place and my Grandson could observe and record to see any changes.

Do you think any of these S'Species Nuts" would get out of their Office Chairs to Hold a Snake???

Ha! Ha!!!

ELINVESTIG8R - 5-4-2011 at 03:48 PM

I once removed a very large pregnant red rattlesnake from my driveway by putting her in a trash can releasing her on a firebreak some distance away from my home. After releasing her she gave me a big kiss on the smackeroo and took off. I have eaten rattlesnake which I cooked over the coals of a fire when I was starving as a kid but since I am not in that situation anymore I don’t harm them.

Bajamatic - 5-4-2011 at 04:09 PM

Skeet. OH! I totally got it wrong. For a second there I thought you meant that if you could go to that island, which is protected I think, that you would take a snake from there, and relocate it to a completely different region. Clearly you didn't say that. Now I get it. you meant, If you could go to that island and take a snake from there, you would do it, and relocate it to a completely different region so you and your grandson can see what happens. Thanks for clarifying.

FYI - you should get out more. The naturalists who advise the suits to make the laws spend way more time outdoors than you - I promise you that. They have degrees in these specialized fields and spend weeks at a time studying ecosystems. Do you know what a degree is, skeet? Or is that some new-fangled nut-jobber liberal thingy, too?

Bajamatic - 5-4-2011 at 04:19 PM

I forgot to add, despite you're claim that you would not maim anything, I refer to your offer of $25, complete with instructions on removing the fangs. So other than that, ok, you're probably right. the capture part I'm just going to let go. Because you clearly captured these animals. Unless you whistled a tune and they followed you north? Could be, I guess.

mtgoat666 - 5-4-2011 at 04:23 PM

skeet:
what is this nonsense about liberal scientists never leaving the office?
most of those liberal scientists chose their profession because they could look forward to government grants funding a career out in the field instead of a career sitting behind a desk!
your tax dollars are paying for liberal scientists to spend their professional time in the out-of-doors, exploring/traveling/climbing/hiking/camping all over the world!

McFez Have you finished Hi Sxhool yet?

You need to get out more often...the term Diaper head has change....around the 1970's. .......but you knew that already.

You assume your Dr is a Hindu......that's funny too. There are Christianity and Islam groups in that part of the world also. But....I am sure that your Triple Bypass Doctor has a huge banner on his/her wall claiming his/hers religion

Did I finish "Hi Sxhool"? Gods....hopefully not the one you attended! It's spelled.........."High School" .

Now...about them snakes that you are relocating......FOOLISH idea. In fact...plain ol stupid.

Guam, like Hawaii, has no native snake species. Its bird fauna had adapted to life without slithering predators. Then, in 1950's the US military probably accidentally introduced this species on cargo from other Pacific islands. The result today is a massive invasion of these snakes. Densities are around 13,000 snakes per square mile. Very few native bird species exist.

Wanna talk about what rats did once they were introduced (via ships) to the new World?

Rabbits. Cute little fellers (like Goat666). Australia installed a fence that stretched 2,021 miles to keeps em and other introduced critters out.

Congratulations Skeet....you most likely screwed up a natural habitat.

The real question here is this: did YOU finish High School?

goldhuntress - 5-4-2011 at 05:14 PM

Skeet, Your kind of weird science is meant for a controlled environment, not the wild, natural habitat. You have no idea what repercussions your act may have had on very sensitive habitat. That being said here's a picture I took of a baby Baja California Rattlesnake (Crotalus enyo) It's really small, less than a 5" diameter coiled up. Quite beautiful I think.

David K - 5-4-2011 at 05:17 PM

Yes, very beautiful... Thanks!

Cypress - 5-4-2011 at 05:19 PM

goldhuntress, Great picture. Thanks.

ursidae69 - 5-4-2011 at 05:21 PM

Fantastic photo! I still have not found a C. enyo and I hope to run into one someday. Beautiful snake.

burnrope - 5-4-2011 at 05:37 PM

This is a great topic.

Skeet, I do have one question. Are the rattlesnakes with rattles communists and the rattleless rattlesnakes socialists or is it the other way around?

Skeet/Loreto - 5-4-2011 at 06:41 PM

Matic:

A Degree??

BS Degree in Criminology/Criminal Investigation

Who's Who among Students in American Colleges and Universitys 1957

How about you?

Bajamatic - 5-4-2011 at 06:58 PM

I have a degree, yes.

Bajamatic - 5-4-2011 at 07:00 PM

We digress.
