They're trying to develop a better drug sub. Oh well....back to the drawing board.

AmoPescar - 5-6-2011 at 12:02 AM

Do they have a cause for the crash??

OR....did they just get a little TOO LOW?

I heard sirens and police/ambulance tearing down Salvaterria around 12:30 yesterday...wondered where they were going so fast. wish I'd followed. is the plane still off shore?

bill erhardt - 5-6-2011 at 06:47 AM

Here are a couple more fake photos of the airplane still in the water at the end of the runway at 7:30 this morning.....

Under guard by Loreto's finest......

woody with a view - 5-6-2011 at 07:02 AM

is that an oil/fuel slick or just calm water behind the plane.

woody.....Just calm water. The plane does not appear to be broken up at all.

bajacalifornian - 5-6-2011 at 07:10 AM

There is a containment boom around the aircraft. Noticeable odor of jet fuel present.

rhintransit . . . we do only hear sirens for parades around here. I thought the sirens were background noise during an interview on Fox News from some American village.

they blasted down Salvaterra at high speed...something I'd never seen/heard. all of us at Ladies Luncheon at Mexico Linda were amazed.
guess I'll do a drive by and see the latest tourist attraction later today.

mulegejim - 5-6-2011 at 07:35 AM

Kind of reminds me of the Japanese airliner that ended up in the mudflats on approach to San Francisco airport back in 1968. Below is a link to the story. Jim

This article says the took off from Loreto and reported a mechanical problem and returned. Only the pilot and co-pilot were aboard. The picture shows the landing gear is up, which would be correct for a planned ditching in the water. The plane is right off the south end of the runway.

wilderone - 5-6-2011 at 07:57 AM

So Mike - what will they have to do to get that out of there and in the air?

Skeet/Loreto - 5-6-2011 at 08:04 AM

Mulege Jim>

Iwas the Adjuster on the Dc 8 japan Airliner that went into SF Bay on Nov. 22 I968 with 187 passengers on Board and No Injuries.

The Pilot committed Hari Kari 10 years later to the date of the Accident. He dialed in a 1,000 Ft/ error on his Altimeter Settings.

My bigest problem was getting the Aircraft out of 7 feet of Mud and Water.

bajacalifornian - 5-6-2011 at 08:32 AM

I have contacted one of the main shoes for aircraft recovery in the Baja. Hoping this friend will be here for a visit.

After one million pages of paperwork, wings are removed and laid aside the fuselage after it is lifted onto a flatbed. Access is convenient. The whole goes North for repair.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-6-2011 at 08:39 AM

Dave Deal use to do a great Job of recovery. I wish whoever gets the job "Good Luck"

Anybody on the Board that has any Photos or Memory of the Twin Engine Cessna buried in the Water and Mud off of the end of the Runway at Pt. Chivato.
The last I was there on An Aircraft Recovery of a Cessna 210 you could still see the outline of it in about 25 Feet.

Would be interesting if some of the divers around Mulege would go down and take a look and inspect it.

What's amazing about that one is the wheels were down. You were the adjuster - what a small world. Jim

Skeet/Loreto - 5-6-2011 at 12:46 PM

Jim:
zI had just been hired by Associated Aviations Underwriters as the Pacific Northwest Claims Manager with an office on the 7th Floor of the Alcoa building.

shortly after the acciden General Sweitzer and Ed Griffith arrived from La and since I was new boy and less experienced in Airline Claims i was appointed to the Job of Salvage.

The Aircraft had landed with the Wheels down in 7 feet of Mud and water just short of the Runwasy which had a ramp down to the Waters edge of the Bay.

At that time we did not have Airbags, we could not pull the Aircraft forward.
There were little japanese people running around with smal hand Hel Computers or something.

I was requested to hire the salvage people and proceed. I hired Vaughn Lamb and his partner and the Japanese wanted all the Skins inspected on the bottom of the Aircraft Took two days.
In the mean time I found that there was nothing set up ti Lift an Aircraft upward, Ended up getting Douglas to remove top shins and place a strut on the Spar of each Wing.
Then brought over a large Crane and lifted the Plane up and floated the Barge under the wheels and pulled it up to the Runway Ramp!!

This Aircraft was back in service in one year..

I only stayed with Associated about 2 years as I did not like working in a Town where Nobody Smiled,

mulegejim - 5-6-2011 at 01:46 PM

"I only stayed with Associated about 2 years as I did not like working in a Town where Nobody Smiled"

Skeet, you must not have run into any of the San Francisco firemen as they are a fun bunch of guys - got to know many of them over my many years as a Los Angeles fireman. Have had some great times in that town with them. Jim

Skeet/Loreto - 5-6-2011 at 03:44 PM

Yeah Jim> There was a group of Fireman fro Long Beach who were the first settlers of Coyote Bay down at Conception
They had the only House up on the Hill, I think it is still there.

In San Francisco it was going from the "Flower Children" to the Dopers. Carol Doda was going by the wayside and all the Nuts were coming in. You Know like "Dykes on Bikes;
SF was to me at one time a Great Town { In the 50"s}.

Skeet

rhintransit - 5-6-2011 at 04:38 PM

apparently the decision was to drag the thing out of the water. Loreto's finest were not allowing spectators any closer. I hope this distant shot will post.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-6-2011 at 05:15 PM

Thanks for the Long range Photo. I appreciate it. That is the way I would have done it.

It will be interesting to see if this was a Stolen Aircraft. heard any rumors?

ANOTHER Skeeting Experience ?

MrBillM - 5-6-2011 at 05:40 PM

Sayeth Skeet:

WHAT ? You were short of Hot Air that day ?

Skeet/Loreto - 5-6-2011 at 06:18 PM

tug and crane maybe?
it will be a total though due to sea water intrusion but fed law is the responsible party [read owner] has to remove it from the country.

Skeet/Loreto - 5-7-2011 at 06:48 AM

If things are done properly that aircraft will be transported back to the Builder and compleley disassembled.
Salt water and especially Cortez Salt Water can do damage if not cleaned Properly.

NO Scheisse, Skeet ?

MrBillM - 5-7-2011 at 10:36 AM

"Salt water and especially Cortez Salt Water can do damage if not cleaned Properly".

REALLY ?

I'll bet that comes as a HUGE surprise to a LOT of people here.

Who Woulda Thunk ?

Salt Water CAN do damage. WOW !

I'd say that Skeet should be working for the Government writing PSAs, but I'm sure that has appeared somewhere on his resume of 1001 (and more) occupations.

slimshady - 5-9-2011 at 06:00 PM

Insurance may not cover such a mess if its pilot error that could have been avoided. Wish them luck

OOPS !

MrBillM - 5-9-2011 at 08:20 PM

IF it's Pilot ERROR, it can ALWAYS be Avoided.

And, while I have no idea what the various Insurance practices or regulations are, roughly half of aviation accidents ARE ruled Pilot-error with a substantial MAJORITY of accidents being "human" error or sabotage.

you have no idea what you are talking about

hull coverage has no relationship to pilot error.

in fact it is one of the reasons you get it.

claim denial has more to do with other FAA compliance issues regards the planes operating certificate.

805gregg - 5-10-2011 at 06:17 PM

I'll bet the cartels are inroute to take possession. With of course the proper bribe money.

Just curious...

You ever catch Turk Murphy's Jazz Band at Earthquake McGoon's?

capt. mike - 5-15-2011 at 05:55 AM

here's the skinny...

pilot wanted to take some pix.
thot co pilot was at helm.
co pilot was not "aware" of this "plan" and was not on the stick or paying particular attention.

classic case of "i thot YOU were flying it!"

settled it into the water when out of spool up time.

Mexican nationals.
soon to flying for some mexican airline likely....enjoy your travels...hahahahaha

bajacalifornian - 5-15-2011 at 03:17 PM

Mike, that is exactly the story that unfolded the day of the mishap.

The untold story & greatest blessing was a class of school children under the palapas just 20 meters or so from where the aircraft came to rest.

Aircraft was leased to a company in Toluca.

[Edited on 5-15-2011 by bajacalifornian]

Never a Lost Cause ?

MrBillM - 5-18-2011 at 10:28 AM

I received a pic from my son of an aircraft that they're in the process of rebuilding at the facility he's working for.

He had titled it "Where to Start" ?

I wouldn't have a clue.

I Guess NOTHING'S impossible.

capt. mike - 5-18-2011 at 02:45 PM

at $85 an hour or more... that is going to be an expensive rebuild! hahaha.
hell it's only moolah...

Cessna 303

MrBillM - 5-20-2011 at 10:56 AM

Which I'm not really familiar with, but it doesn't seem to be that much of a Standout. Limited numbers built because it wasn't that popular.

One thing he did say was that the pic comes AFTER they had removed a lot of the interior prior to the restoration.

It MUST make some kind of economic sense for the owner to spend the money.

I guess.

A little familar

beercan - 5-20-2011 at 11:33 AM

looks a little like mine did last month --new Bose intercom/headsets,
new GPS & Steering, new radios etc. After they they put it all together & vacuumed her out --IT WORKED !! Baby flew to intersections, and the music played !!
