If you take your cabeza out of your culo, you might realize that by and large, it's the right side of the political spectrum that would be the first to trash Mexico.

That said, the author of the article seems to me to be less than educated about the entire issue and may just have her own agenda.

That whole thing about the number of US citizens killed in Mexico is a total red herring, in that she provided no comparisons, while also leaving her an out about whether the number of casualties were tourist related.

Bottom line is that the article was bunk.

When I came down here to live, (it will be 22 years in July), My Mother and Step Dad had such a fit, they were sure I would be hauled off to some cave back who knows where and be raped and done away with for sure.
Well, I must admit this did provoke some pretty racie fantasy's in my head, You know some Young Stud with his bandaleros, riding on his horse sweeping me up and off in to the hills we would go, ho ho, I am still waiting.........sigh. Alas, nothing of the sort has even come close to happening, and now that I am a grandma, I expect it is even less of a possibility.

My point is, the fear of the unknown is nothing new. I would be nervous as all gidout in Chicago on my own for example. I am not saying no harm will ever come to me here, but if I was up North, well bad things can happen any where.

News organizations need content and for some strange reason, stories about travel or violence in Mexico draws an audience.

Katiejay99 - 6-10-2011 at 07:40 AM

I think it is interesting that MSNBC has seemed to pull this story from their site. It was the big banner when I copied it. Now I can't even find the story on their site.

I think they may have gotten a bunch of nasty emails and perhaps some of them from top people in Mexico. Anyhow, I am glad they did pull it. The link still works.

I just shake my head at people who constantly question me about living in Mexico and how dangerous it is. LOL. At least people enjoy themselves here. I mean look around at how many people sit outside, wave as you go by and just generally love life. That is how it is in Todos Santos and I very much love being here and being a part of it.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong Forum. I'm sure BN can fix it, right?

todos santos is not DF or texas border region.

in all 3rd world countries, there is a marked difference between the expat enclaves/resort areas and the parts of the country where most people live real lives. in parts of mexico, many of the people living real lives are living lives of violence and terror.

i don't think todos santos is representative of the other 99% of mexico.

I'm the last one of my circle of friends who still visit
Baja. Some of us feel comfortable in Mex others don't.
For me I started out with surf trips in the 70's. But I do believe
if an unfortunate incident would happen to one of us,
more than likely we would not return. The # of Americans
killed in Mex gets me wondering how many, and
I have to be PC, have underbelly connections in Mex
are down there for something more than tourism
Not to forget the FACT that on at least 1 occasion last
yr or so, there were bodies hanging from a Blvd overpass
in so. TJ. We all know who the violence is directed at,
but no wonder the casual Mex gringo tourist is
concerned

Mtgoat, In some ways I actually agree, I often reflect that while I live a life oblivious of violence, there is some guy just kicking the bezesus out of his wife in the very same town at the very same moment that I am breathing deep the peace. Where we differ in our perspective is; I don't think violence and terror is only experienced in 3rd world countries and only affects the poor. I believe this exists in all walks of life in any town, any where in the world, it is USUALLY (but certainly not always, in this moment I think of Africa, ay, yi, yi), behind closed doors. I walk among the lower income folks a little more than I hang with the rich, I don't believe that most of the people I interact with wish any harm on anyone.

Hey Doug. Interesting edit. :lol::lol::P

absinvestor - 6-11-2011 at 12:42 PM

Eli- your story brings back memories. 1973 was our first trip to Mexico. We drove from the Bay Area to Acapulco. Our son was 2 and our daughter was 5. Before leaving my parents begged us not to take the children. They were sure that our 2 children would be kidnapped or killed after we were murdered by bandidos. They really thought that bandidos were everywhere and we wouldn't get 100 miles beyond the border before something terrible would happen. We and the kids had a fantastic time. (Our only problem was, due to my stubborn self, we ran out of gas. A gas station attendant decided to finish his siesta before getting up to fill up our tank which was nearly on empty and I decided to take my business elsewhere!!) We ran out of gas about 60 miles from the next gas station. Within minutes an elderly lady walked over from her little shack and offered to take my wife and kids to her home until we could get help. A Green Angel truck showed up about an hour later, shook his head at my stupidity and put 5 gallons of gas in our gas tank. Since 1973 we have made dozens of trips to Mexico and in the mid 90's lived for a couple of years in Baja Norte. (Early next month we are relocating permanently to Baja Sur.) I have never worried about violence. I do know that if I leave the house or motorhome unlocked I can expect to have my tv etc to be stolen. I also know that if I leave the keys in the car that the car will be missing on my return and that if I leave a full gas can outside it will be empty or missing when I decide to use it. These things also happen in the States but not as frequently as in Mexico. Other than the border towns I have never felt unsafe. My wife and I and two friendly dogs walk the deserted beaches well into the night and we've never had a problem. Might this change- maybe- but for now we prefer to enjoy the best of Mexico and not worry about what may never happen. Ron

Well said, absinvestor, your story rings so true, Congratulations on your pending move. I wish you many years to come of happiness in Baja.

I have only been helped along my way. In the mid 70"s I hitchhiked pregnant from Oaxaca back to the Oregon, I have traveled all over, slept on the beach alone for months at a time, nothing but kindness have I ever known here or up there for that matter, I am blessed no doubt. Well, ah, I once got pick pocketed on a city bus in Oaxaca, I should have known better than have my coin purse in my bag instead stashed in my bust. Also, in the California once I had a bicycle stolen which left me feeling horribly violated, and that is about it. I am the first to admit that someday my luck may run out and I will encounter the violence that I have been warned about, (I sure hope not).
Anyway, since I first registered on this board not so long ago back in 2003, someone is ALWAYS saying Mexico is no longer a safe place to be. Well, I think that may be true about the whole planet, if you time has come, it's come, doesn't matter where you be. So meanwhile, enjoy the gift of being, life is really that simple, at least for me. Sara

krafty - 6-11-2011 at 06:06 PM

Thanks, Sara-truer words were never spoken.

A friend of ours just visited PV, and bought a time share in Nuevo Vallarto, she said it's totally safe, 2 guard gates to get in, armed security everywhere checking your ID passes, even on the golf course. If Mexico is so safe why would they have these security measures? Have you ever had your ID checked on a US golf course? They said it's totally safe but were told not to go downtown? and never left the complex, now that's how I want to vacation.

Boy howdy are you ever right, this Nuevo Vallarto sounds like a jail, I wouldn't go there either.

It's weird, but during Semana Santa, a 2 week trip around the entire Peninsula, i not only didn't get mugged, raped, or otherwise harmed, but had a complete stranger return my lost wallet with 400 dollars in it intact. And he had to drive 300 miles to get it to me. Maybe this recent experience of mine is completely irrelevant to this discussion, but in addition I've spent a lot of time nights in "Centro" and have yet to see a fist fight. Not sure I could expect the same outcomes and observations back home in Los Angeles.

I think You comment is completely relevant to the subject of this tread, it is about is it safe to come to Baja right, which is after all a part of Mexico. Oh and I really enjoyed it too.

My advise to those who debate the issue is that it is really easy to decide; If it feels right, you should come on down, you will most likely have a great time and your faith in humanity renewed, if it doesn't, that's fine too, you shouldn't, Mexico is not for you.

ZZZZZZZZZZZ Deja Vu

The ONE thing ALL of these "Is it Safe ?" "Is it FAIR ?" "Isn't the USA MORE Dangerous ?" "Are the Media being Bullies ?", Yada, Yada, Yada Threads have in common here is that it's all a Bunch of Choir Talk.

NONE of the people who are influenced by all of those Bleeding Horror Stories in the Lamestream Media are going to be otherwise influenced by anything said here.

Hell, they don't even know "Here" exists.

I suppose it is Cathartic, though.

jeremias - 6-12-2011 at 01:33 PM

I think "they" may be the reason I'm getting so many waves to myself lately... thanks media! I think I'm a bit conflicted on this issue.
