Update on Juanita

 Pages:  1

Sallysouth - 6-17-2011 at 09:17 PM

A week in Best Western, shuttled back and forth across the border each day, She in a wheel chair, I booked a room at Hacienda del Rio.They were so kind, accomodating, etc. Now, after a week with Dr.Calzada, he calls our room and says, come see me now.I can not help her.Get her to a good hospital now, she needs a blood transfusion . The shuttle picks us up at the hotel. which is not protocol... Off to the Otay border, out of the van, back into the wheelchair.People in the van rush forward to help us.I have two peices of luggage and her bag with meds .Three blocks later, we find the waiting shuttle, but have to wait for the driver. He is in the bank, hassling with another driver, and he comes back, 15 mins later.Juanita cannot sit up because of her whole body pain.We make it to my car I left at B. Western, I put her in the pasenger seat in prone, and I drive her to Mission Hospital, ER, where she is now.MSI, Medical, they can't seen to push the paperwork thru. She is slowing dying.UCI(Irvine Med) has a bed for her .She needs treatment yesterday!!!This is what she has.Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This is only the beginning of this story. She had acute, severe Pneumonia when I finllaly retreived her from SD airport.I took care of her for that week, and of course, I got acute broncitis.Got a Z pak, and have had her children living with me.(They are 5 and 7)I am trying to be strong, but sure could use some help.Thats all I can write tonite.Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.I hate the California Medical system..She is dying and it is Friday. She has been there, blood transfusions, and they do nothing,.,its friday they say.

I just got off the phone with her Dad.He talked to her doc and he told him it would cost $600.000 to a mil to accept her and or treat her.So what could be done is maybe a fund for her girls. Thanks Mike and all...Guess it is a waiting time right now.Damn the weekend... prayers for her please...:saint:

jenny.navarrette - 6-17-2011 at 10:55 PM

Sally, I am so sorry about Juanita. I know nothing about your family, but I have ideas.

If Juanita is a US citizen with a social security number, or has permanent residency, and has worked in the US at some time, she can apply immediately for social security disability benefits. This can be done on the internet. There is an emergency procedure called "Presumptive Disability Payments" which can get her some money right away. If she gets on Social Security disability, she will eventually qualify for medicare. Once on SS, her children can qualify for supplemental income support benefits until they are 18.

Also, being that you are in California, the kids can qualify for "Healthy Families" medical insurance through the state. It is very cheap, something like $10 per month for full benefits with a $5 co-pay.

Finally, I believe California's Medi-cal is for indigents who are residents of California. Start working on that if Juanita is a legal resident or US citizen.

Very sorry for your anguish; it is palpable and heart-wrenching.

What is her white blood cell count right now? Has it spread to the central nervous system? It certainly sounds like it.

DENNIS - 6-18-2011 at 07:46 AM

I pray.

David K - 6-18-2011 at 08:00 AM

Prayers for you, her, and family. Sorry that this has fallen on all of you!

Here is the flyer you sent me:

Querida Sally, I pray that Juanita's strong spirit will win the battle, miracles do happen, we can only hope, that and wait with you in my heart is all I can presently offer.
Thank You for letting Us know what is going on, Sara

Oh Sally, this breaks my heart. I wish I were close enough to help you. Is there anything that I can do for you or Juanita here in Los Cabos.
Hang in there and know that all of we Nomads are praying for a happy ending.

Thanks Judy. There may be something you can do.She has lots of friends down there but her store will need to be vacated and all of her stuff put into a storage.Same with the house. There are 8 cats there right now, two sets of babies. Not sure what will be done with htem. Her Nanny is staying there(she is a live-in) And hopefully her boyfriend also who works for Juanita, so I guess all is safe there.I will keep you updated and thanks for your generous offer of help.

Bajahowodd - 6-18-2011 at 03:33 PM

Sally. I fervently hope that Juanita can overcome the current situation. And props to you for caring and working so hard.

I have first hand knowledge of how slow the application process can be to many of the programs that have been mentioned, as I have been fairly close to the position that you are in right now. Especially MSI.

That said, has anyone even noticed that basically all the programs that have been mentioned here, while life savers for so many, are under strongly under attack by the Repubs who seek to eliminate them???

bajamedic - 6-18-2011 at 10:33 PM

Sally, both you and your daughter have been on my mind all day, after reading your post.

My daughter and I have worked in the healthcare field, here in California for many years, we have seen lots of good and even a little bad.

My Story: My family and I have been on the cancer trail along with my 35 yo daughter, as she has been fighting Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her Doctor told her that 90% of his Lymphoma patients require no further treatment after the first round of Chemo. When that did not work, he gave the same odds for a remission with a second round of Chemo. When that did not work and we had begun to feel hopeless and wondered about her life span and what would happen to her 4 yo daughter, we all decided to fight and pray. Many prayers and tears were offered by both friends and family and she is now in remission after a stem cell treatment. Although the stem cell was brutal on her body, she is in remission, keeping her own home going, taking care of her daughter (now 5) and seeking new employment that can accommodate her needs due to some of the left over effects from the stem cell process. To look at her today, you would only see a healthy vibrant mom, daughter and wife. Keep up the faith and give a good fight, the system (California Healthcare) has given her and our family a new lease on life, I pray that you have the same outcome. JH

goldhuntress - 6-18-2011 at 10:43 PM

So sorry to hear this. You may try contacting the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, they may have good advice to offer. My Mom was just diagnosed with a different form of Leukemia . The copay for her meds was supposed to $4,600.00 per month but some foundation has committed to paying that bill for 3 years, $165,000 in total. So, there is help, you really need to get some help navigating the system. I don't know how my folks found out about this group but I will find out and let you know. Meanwhile, quoting Dennis, I pray.

JESSE - 6-18-2011 at 10:54 PM

If theres anything i can do, LMK.

Hook - 6-19-2011 at 12:10 AM

This doesnt seem like the place or time to discuss the politics of medical coverage. It's a tough question, unto itself.

Sally needs tough answers, right now.

Pescador - 6-19-2011 at 07:16 AM

I am not going to go into the politics of this issue, but after having gone through the cancer treatment not only with my wife, but all of the people that we met while in treatment, I do know for a fact that what Juanita needs to do is to check into the emergency room at a major hospital and she will get admitted to the cancer treatment center. We had a good friend who was basically broke with no health insurance at all and she developed breast cancer. Her treatment was almost on par with the treatment that Marika received with the only possible exception being that she received her chemo at the hospital while Marika got to relax in the easy chair at the Cancer Center. So you will have to be a little persistent in your approach and basically indicate that Juanita can not pay for her stay, but that she goes in through the emergency room and they will treat her. That means that you pick the best hospital with a cancer treatment program and go in to the emergency room there.

BajaBlanca - 6-20-2011 at 10:08 AM

you are in my prayers. can someone give me some background on Juanita ?

also, can someone in the States set up a pyapal account so we can contribute a little to help cover costs of a babysitter/food/clothes for the kids ?

I met Juanita in Feb. 2003 when she attended Viva Baja 4... Here is the photo and caption from the web page for Viva Baja 4

Maalaea Garcia and Juanita Miller are Msal's (Sallysouth's)beautiful daughters.
Juanita owns El Fuerte Sportfishing in
Puerto Escondido, Baja California Sur. http://www.elfuerte.com/

Since then, El Fuerte Sportfishing has moved to Cabo San Lucas and more recently I believe it is no longer in the fishing business?

I agree with Pescador... find the best cancer treatment hospital you can (Scripps comes to mind) and take her to the emergency room. Honest to goodness, Sally, they will (have to!) accept her and then will treat her. I know this as fact based on treatment of a family member and of a close friend.

Do not allow this insurance rigmarole to waste valuable time during which Juanita could be receiving treatment. The Medi-Cal/MediCare issues will be handled by hospital social workers and administration after she has begun to ring up bills.

Just take her to emergency at your hospital of choice.... and refuse to leave until she is seen. You will be well within your rights, so don't be afraid to do this.

I'll send you a u2u with my personal contact info.... and we can talk further if you wish.

nena

Bajamatic - 6-20-2011 at 04:46 PM

Take he to the ER. They will admit her. That comes directly from an ER doc.

Ditto. This is exactly right. Drive her to Scripps Green Hospital. Now, if possible. With her condition, admittance into the ER will be no problem.

u2u me if you need transportation or any local assistance.

I dont know this young lady (Juanita ) but I am a person willing to help, as I and many many others helped the little baby that was brought to our attention because of her bad heart. It is my relationship with my Lord and Savior which compels me to share what I have been given. If somebody could set up a Paypal Acct. I'm sure we could get some much needed help to these people. God Bless you Juanita.

Hello Sally,
I am very sorry to hear about Juanita's health issue but I am glad that she is getting the needed treatment now. I would recommend checking with Breast Cancer Solutions @ http://www.bcsurvivors.org/ or 866.960.9222 for information on how to navigate financial and health care issues. Due to their mission they can only directly support breast cancer patient but they provide information to other cancer patients as well. They are located in Orange County.
Also, please check your U2U.

great news ... glad you are doing better too.

Sallysouth - 6-25-2011 at 06:30 PM

The latest, She has been moved to a room that monitors her heart(i'm thinking teletromy?) On Monday the blood bank kicks in and they will be trying to find a match for her Platelets. She has lost so much weight, according to Amy, my youngest.Good news is, she walked today, from her room to the nurses station. That is the furthest she has walked in weeks. Her Father is with her almost constantly. Her girls and I have bonded and are learning from each other. The girls' Dad has been on a constant vigilance and taking the girls for overnite stays, which gives me time to walk, relax and get stuff done.My shingles are healing.Only two other issues now, my Dad, who thinks he is married to Juanita, and my SO, in a neck brace and on Vicodin, and drinking at least a sixer a day.I would like to know who coined the phrase"golden years".We need to talk...All in all, it is a heck of lot better today than what it was when Juanita and I were in TJ losing precious time and looking for answers, two or so weeks ago.She knows she is in the best of care with top notch docs now.She told me so today.Keep on praying amigos..it helps! Sally

DENNIS - 6-25-2011 at 06:37 PM

I pray, Sally. I pray.

Eli - 6-25-2011 at 06:40 PM

Thanks for the up date Sally. That Juanita is where you and she believes she should be is so important to fight the battle. What ever path one takes, believing is an all important element in healing, I think.

I was wondering how your Dad was doing. Is he living with you for now?

As my dear ol Dad use to always say, "Getting old aint for sissy's". Hang in there, the pendulum has to swing.

I am not real good at prayer, but when ever I walk by a church, which here is often, I stop at the doorway for a moment and ask La Virgin Guadalupe to keep giving her strenght to Juanita, and I will continue to do so.

toneart - 6-25-2011 at 06:47 PM

Sally,

I have personal experience with Cancer. Of course, everyone has their own pet remedies, offered with good intentions, so I won't give any. Juanita, you, and the rest of you family will learn and do what feels best for you. The advice you were given here on the BajaNomad was good in regards to expediting Juanita's entry into a hospital.

Just know that the exponential power of our collective good wishes and prayers are with you and are working. I am glad you are getting some relief from bedside duty. Caregivers have a very difficult job. Bless you!

Tony

Sallysouth - 6-25-2011 at 07:03 PM

Sara, you are so rightin the beliving part, but this time it is fact, even better! And like you, I am not real good at prayer, but we all "pray"n our own ways, yes?Thank you for thinking of us.Tony, The advice given here was good, but I had already done what was needed to do straight from TJ.What I wanted to do a very long time ago when she first got sick.Straight to a good ER.Thanks for the kind thoughts.Abrazos, Sally

Sally,
Again I wish Juanita HEALTH, and any thing I can do to help out, more
than willing to do so. I met Juanita in Puerto Escandito, a few times,
She helped with fuel for my boat, and supplies back some years when
she was in charge of El Fuerte Sportfishing, I don't forget kindness.Which we
all should recall, if it is given freely, which she did, Great Lady.
Hope for the all the best,
Mike

Sallysouth - 6-25-2011 at 09:12 PM

Thanks Mike.I was wondering how you knew her.Was that when they lived at Tripui?I stayed there with them for some time.I loved that place.Yes, she is an awesome woman. She is very scared right now, and missing being in charge of her life. How about a mail setup??Nomads could send cards or letters to me .I dunno why I hadn't thought of this before. How safe is it to put my house addy here on the www?Not sure if the hospital would receive mail for her.We have a PO box addy also, for biz, but it would work.

shari - 6-26-2011 at 07:07 AM

Sally, you, Juanita and your family are in my thoughts today as I send positive energy and prayers your way. I am relieved to hear you are climbing back up and getting better too...somehow we often take on the stress of people we havent even met yet...I breath a huge sigh of relief to release some of the anxiety I felt for your family....hang in there amiga!!!

Her platelets are up today also.Still one day at a time. Thanks Shari, DianaT, Doug, Tony, Eli,and all of you caring Nomads.I walked also this morning and yesterday, around the harbor and back.Sure makes a difference!More tomorrow...Bless you all, Sally

Eli - 6-27-2011 at 02:45 PM

Sally, I am so glad to read that Juanita is having a good day. The good days are to be cherished, hopefully her strong spirit and the meds will get her thru this.
Meanwhile, walk, continue to take care of yourself, continue with your conviction that you are on the right path. Remember, you are much needed by those who love you, you are so fortunate to be loved, even when there is so much pain in the process.

bajajudy - 6-27-2011 at 04:29 PM

Sally
I second what Eli said. Take good care of yourself so you will be ready when she gets out of the hospital.
Please give my love to Ty and Juanita

krafty - 6-27-2011 at 04:30 PM

How are your shingles? I know your daughter is your #1 priority, but I think shingles are the most painful malady one can have. Take special care!

Sallysouth - 6-28-2011 at 01:37 PM

Todays update.Just got off the phone with mija and she is doing really well today. She is eating now and off the pain meds! She told me she doesn't remember the 10 days she spent in Mission Hospital at all. They had her so doped up.The doc says the chemo is kicking butt and her pain is almost gone!! That woman is a fighter! My shingles are almost gone.I caught it fast and got antivirual meds for them, which I take 5 times a day.Yeah, Krafty, shingles are miserable if left untreated.Unfortunatly, I cannot visit mija until they are totally gone, very contagious. Thanks Nomads, again, for your prayers and well wishes. You guys and gals rock!!!!:tumble:

capt. mike - 6-28-2011 at 03:47 PM

glad to hear Sally!

did they tell you anything about the shingles vs a vs your history with chicken pox??

my mom just had shingles - wow what a terrible affliction!
i have had chicken pox which means either i will get shingles or i will not.

medicine.... a dark science it seems.

David K - 6-28-2011 at 06:36 PM

I recall tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a treatment for shingles... I will check my refrence on it...

krafty - 6-28-2011 at 06:42 PM

I had it and did have chicken pox. It is also very much stress related.

Sallysouth - 6-28-2011 at 06:44 PM

Mike, Shingles are a form of Herpes Zostrer(don't ask me what that means).I have been told the Chicken pox virus lays dormant in ones body and becomes Shingles when you are experiencing extreme trauma or stress.I have had an outbreak three times, the first when I was pregnant with my last baby, 8 1/2 months along and my husband told me he was leaving me for another woman. He did.Second time was 5 yrs. ago when I had emergency surgury for a rutured abcess diverticuli. Now this one.Important that it be treated as soon as you even think you have it.HUGE difference!Yes they are very painful, specially if they are on your buttocks(mine)!!!How di ur mom get rid of them??

Eli - 6-28-2011 at 07:09 PM

I was watching a special about Shingles on T.V., they talked about a vaccine, that works only a percentage of the time, you have to have the shot before you have an eruption, and there are no guarantees, maybe like 50% of the time it works, the older you are the less chance it can avoid them. So, Mike you might investigate that option?

Natalie Ann - 6-29-2011 at 09:15 AM

I am so pleased with the good news about Juanita!
Truly your daughters know how to fight for their lives.

May the news of Juanita continue to be positive....
and may your shingles go far away and forget to come back, Sally.

Prayers continue.

jureal - 6-29-2011 at 09:19 AM

We have used the leaves of the malva plant as a remedy for shingles.

Eli - 6-29-2011 at 10:00 AM

Sally, Juanita continues to be front and center in my prayers. I know that not all days are going to be easy ones, the pendulum must always swing. I hope that today she is o.k.

What are they and how do they work? I don't suffer from Shingles, but I know this info will interest some folks here.

jureal - 6-30-2011 at 12:37 PM

We used it on shingles when my mom had it. Also on chicken pox when my wife and daughters had it. BTW, you can catch the chicken pox from someone that has the shingles. Turned out that my wife never had it and she was taking care of mom when she had the shingles. We used it a a topical dressing over the affected areas. Boiled it in pot of water to soften the leaves.

Here is a link.... many others.... just google it.

http://www.natural-healing-guide.com/therapeutic-teas.htm

Found that it soothes the skin and lessens the scarring later.

Old Mexican home remedy passed on to us by my wifes mother.

Btw, the malva grows like weeds around here.

flyfishinPam - 6-30-2011 at 03:09 PM

flor de malva, yes I do see it all over the place in the desert, maybe David K knows which page its on in Norman Robert's book to ID it (I don't have it with me now)

flyfishinPam - 6-30-2011 at 03:37 PM

OK as I didn't have the book in front of me I wasn't sure. There's a lot lacking in that book but its a good general reference. This plant is all over the place and often it will be the only plant in bloom, it blooms throughout the year. The flowers are small like 1/4 inch in diameter. The base is often woody and it grows to about 3 feet high

take care of yourself Sally and we're sending positive energy to Juanita so she recovers

Oh, it could very well be in there... but under a different name or the web site's bio. name is incorrect...

Is there any other local names for the plant (without the words 'flor de' in it)?

EDIT: I just clicked on your photo and it gives the 'rest of the name' you left out... 'flor de malva rosa'... Malva rosa IS in the book! Page 267!! (Melochia tomentosa)

I wonder if we are talking about two different plants that share the same local name? Roberts doesn't say anything about medical uses for the plant in his book.

Today is a very good day! Juanita is doing much better! She is producing platelets and is bossing the nurses around! The doctor is very optimistic about her recovery. The chemo really threw her for a loop, not know what to expect.Altho her Sis just went thru breast cancer surgery, masectomy and chemo ,radiation, the two cancers are very different. She is still in a sterile environment and I cannot seem to get rid of my broncitis or whatever the heck it is, so I cannot visit her.She is walking and getting her appetite back.Next biggie is another bone marrow biopsy to tell whether or not she is producing good or bad platelets. She also still has no white cell count which hopefully will change, but gives her No immunity to infections or viruses, etc.She is on an uphill swing now and the med center is doing an outstanding job of taking care of her.See you guys?? All the prayers and well wishes.... well there ya go!!!! Abrazos, Sally

BajaGringo - 7-4-2011 at 01:32 PM

Great news Sally - so glad to hear. Will continue to keep you all in our prayers...

Roberto - 7-4-2011 at 02:21 PM

Sally, glad to hear it. You clearly made the right choice in taking her where you did. For all it's faults U.S. Medical Technology is at the forefront. When you were asking about Sanoviv, I was shuddering at the thought that she might end up there. Glad the Mexican doctor was honest in saying he could not help her. Wish he'd done it sooner.

I am available to you for anything. I live in San Diego, not far from UCI at all. Just U2U me.

mike odell - 7-4-2011 at 03:28 PM

GREAT NEWS Sally, take care of yourself too.

Sallysouth - 7-4-2011 at 05:14 PM

Thanks Blanca. My shingles are all but gone.Took an antiviral pill, wiped em out!B.Gringo thank you also.We are not out of the woods yet.Roberto,, gracias also.San diego was where this all started but her family is here in the area now and tonite she is getting a pizza for dinner! She can have NO fresh vegis or fruits(except unpeeled, like bananas or oranges)because they may carry even a minute amount of bacteria.Cooked vegis on the pizza. She could not understand why my blood pressure had gone up to 167/99, and I needed meds for it, first time ever.I didn't know what to say to her. That was one of the most stressfull weeks(or more) of my life.Think about taking your child to a doc, in TJ no less, not knowing what was wrong with her, for a week.naw, no stress......I could go on but I already did....Happy Independence Day Nomads!!

measomsan - 7-5-2011 at 12:31 PM

very good news about Juanita indeed. I will tell the folks here in El Tule and we will keep praying for her recovery...

Eli - 7-5-2011 at 01:19 PM

Good news! Hope the upswing continues for You and Juanita.

Ken Bondy - 7-5-2011 at 02:50 PM

Buenas noticias Sally!!!

jureal - 7-5-2011 at 04:22 PM

Just to be clear, this is the one that we have been using. There are all kinds of different varieties of this plant.
http://www.countyofkings.com/ag%20commissioner/Ag%20Services...

We even have some of this sprouting on our lawn right now. Normally you see it growing everywhere in the spring while the ground is still naturally moist from the wet rains.

Sallysouth - 7-10-2011 at 11:05 AM

Latest news! Juanita has been "released" from the hospital for an eight day at home stay!!She has made remarkable progress. She is producing white cells and platelets now.She is at Dads house and her girls are spending some time with her but the girls are staying with me.Juanita gets tired easily and the girls are a LOT of energy. So she goes back in next Monday for three more weeks of treatment and then we will see what happens after that. Thanks Nomads for all your well wishes and prayers!! Abrazos, Sally

Eli - 7-10-2011 at 11:29 AM

I agree that a week at home will likely be good for Juanita's spirit.

Yesterday I spoke with a friend who received the same diagnosis in 1994.
He's beat 2 recurrances since 1994 and he's still doing well.
Keep the faith !
