Off Road Expo in Pomona

John M - 8-22-2011 at 08:21 PM

Mark the dates, October 8 & 9

http://www.offroadexpo.com/

TMW - 8-23-2011 at 09:43 AM

Marked and ready.

David K - 8-23-2011 at 10:05 AM

I hope it is a good show... after going to them up to 2009, (which was tiny compared to the others) we passed on last year's. The best part is visiting with the Nomads, including dinner with John M's family afterwards... Chevy's rocks!

Pacifico - 8-23-2011 at 04:11 PM

Unfortunately.....No, wait.....fortunately I'll be in Baja then! :lol::lol::lol:

Udo - 8-23-2011 at 05:28 PM

Ken Cooke - 8-24-2011 at 06:00 PM

I might go...

But, the big Off Road Expo is in Tijuana this weekend!:bounce:

100+ miles away and into another country is a 'for sure'... but 10 miles from your home is a maybe? :?:

 See you soon Ken... even if your logic escapes me!

The Pomona Off Road Expo isn't that much fun. I don't enjoy hanging out close to home - never have. I prefer International travel to local places to visit. That's what brought me to BajaNomad in the first place. Otherwise, I'd be webcrawling the Riverside.gov website. :light:

TMW - 8-26-2011 at 10:12 AM

Lots of Jeep stuff there last year. You might see a new whiz bang gadget that will make yours do things never thought of before.

wessongroup - 8-26-2011 at 10:50 AM

Pomona vs TJ... I'd take Tj too... lot more fun.. IMHO

Again Ken... don't forget that camera... :):)

No doubt about it being more 'fun' and scantly clad young girls in Tijuana... But, the Off Road Expo is in Ken's back yard and is where the industry displays all the kinds of products that Ken likes to use... Plus, there are a few girls there too!

2009 Off Road Expo:

wessongroup - 8-26-2011 at 11:06 AM

We used to hit the Pomona Fair plus all the other things RV's and off road.. for a long while .... haven't been in many years... used to be a lot of fun.. too..

But, still like the weather and beer down SOB... just saying..

TMW - 8-26-2011 at 01:54 PM

Ken don't need to be going to TJ looking at girls. His wife might make him into another Bobbit.

Deja Vu

We normally get to see lots of the displays throughout the year. Here's proof!

Standing with the world-famous Rick Russell!:bounce:

The ARB "Uber Jeep":o

But, Tijuana takes the cake! I can't wait to see all of the excitement - something badly missing in Pomona.

Desertbull - 8-26-2011 at 06:22 PM

Same weekend as Pete's Camp Poker Run and the Powder Puff desert race in Barstow...Powder Puff with more than 200 entries...ladies wanna race!

Curt63 - 8-26-2011 at 08:23 PM

Bummer I'll probably be at our desert opener ni Glamis riding the BIG sand.

David K - 9-17-2011 at 03:12 PM

Bummer... we always go on Sunday... maybe we will change plans?

If the Nomads want to go on Sat and meet for a drink and dog I'm Ok with that.

Let me know if you plan on meeting outside of the event, and I would be happy to stop by and visit.

TMW - 10-1-2011 at 02:27 PM

What's the word on who is going and when, Sat. or Sun.? Is John M buying the drinks? Is Ken buying dinner afterwards? Is DK getting a new Baja Tacoma for Baja. Is Neal Johns and John M going to show me the Mojave Road?

David, do you have a time factor for when you, Ken, et al, will be at the expo?
I am assuming on Sunday.

The fairgrounds is about 20 minutes from where I am staying.
Let me know, please.

Nope... nobody liked Sunday, so if we go Sat. or Sun... it will be a last minute decision.

It sure was great fun in the past with Surfer Jim, The squarecircle, TW, John M, Neal Johns, Ken Cooke, Frigatebird, etc.

Let's just go both days!LOL

If it's a last minute decision...let me know which day (s)?

Saturday for us!

John M - 10-4-2011 at 08:25 AM

Etched in stone, for now.

Meet at the same food stand as in the past around noon?
cell 760-221-2906

And TW - We just did the Mojave Road three weeks ago, didn't know you were interested. It's close enough to do it again, we can talk about it on SATURDAY!

I would like to do the Mojave road as well! It will be like the Baja main road BEFORE Hwy. 1!

TMW - 10-4-2011 at 08:48 AM

I'll be there Sat. too. Meet outside bldg 4 in the middle with bldg 5 & 6 across from us. http://www.offroadexpo.com/event/197

Thanks Udo... that would be fun to meet up with you guys and the other Nomads again, too.

I really think Saturday is already planned, but I am seeing if that can change. I really wasn't sure about going at all... business is really down, and the rain isn't helping! If things were better we would like to go to SallySouth's event to help her daughter's fund raiser in Dana Point one day, and the Expo the other.

TMW - 10-4-2011 at 09:02 AM

John I would very much like to talk about the Mojave Road. I have Dennis Casebier's latest Mojave Road Guide. He gives you and Neal Johns a warm acknowledgement.

Look for these beautiful people at the Expo.

wessongroup - 10-4-2011 at 09:08 AM

Thanks to all.......... sounds like a blast for all who attend ... and having two aren't afraind to "shoot" some pic's..

Looking forward to the trip report ... :):)

surfer jim - 10-4-2011 at 09:52 AM

Still here.....

Probably won't go to EXPO. Went last year and it was mostly jeep stuff and lift kits. Wrote note on calender not to go back!.
Will be in BARSTOW watching Powder Puff race Saturday.

Would like to do MOJAVE ROAD. It has been many years since last trip. I may have to go find a book with the details of road....it is somewhere.

Any possible dates for Mojave road?

While we are at it how about DEATH VALLEY trip?

Wonderful to see you Jim! We were disappointed with the 2009 Expo, and didn't go last year. Too much Jeep stuff, huh? That should be perfect for Ken! It used to be an equal mix of Jeep and Toyota stuff with off road racing and other off road stuff and camping gear.

No room for civility in OT, John.
Anyway....when you go to OT, you'll be asked to sign in. The secret word is.... over18......just like that.
Spray yourself with feces repellent before you go in there.

I'm still around, and maybe 50/50 for the expo either day. I have been prepping for a Sierra hike, and wearing myself out.

Mojave Road would be a first for me. I'll have to get caught up on the details. And the Pole Line...might be a second deflowering in as many trips.:D

Where will this take place? I will look for you and Elizabeth.

David K - 10-7-2011 at 08:52 PM

Josh doesn't know how it is parked, only that it is inside at the OFF ROAD MAGAZINE booth... If we ride up with Josh, it will be not as early, since we will need to remain there until 5 pm closing and who knows how much later until anything blocking the truck from leaving is moved.

I don't know if it is the Ford Raptor Luxury Prerunner (as seen on the multi series You Tube videos) or another of their beautiful creations? We will get to ride in it out to the parking lot where it will be loaded on the trailer.

Look for RaceWorks name on other off road racers on display there. Steve Sourapas' Corona Beer Trophy Truck is one of the RaceWorks project trucks, too.

No, you know my political belief is honesty... no BS.

Here is what I read on another forum:

"was anybody else at the 12:00 demo and saw the yellow pro 2 truck catch fire at the end?"

"Yeah we were there. Firefighter guy told us to step back from the front since the fire was so big"

surfer jim - 10-9-2011 at 10:01 AM

Only report I saw so far says it was not good....very small.

TMW - 10-9-2011 at 11:04 AM

I thought it was a pretty good show. Lots of Jeeps everywhere. Jeeps Jeeps Jeeps. Ken will like it. Very very few Toyota FJs. I talked to Bilstein about the delay in shipping the 5160 shocks and of course he checks and says the ones for my GMC are in stock ready to ship. Didn't hear anything about a car fire. I saw a front bumper with light bar for my 04 Tacoma that I really liked and will call the company next week.

Met John M not at the meeting place but inside one of the buildings and we discussed the Mojave Rd run next weekend.

It's interesting just watching people. With a beer in hand I sat down outside the north end of the big building near where you enter and for a while just watched people. I saw a guy with his right foot in a cast resting his right knee on a reverse type tricycle with the handle bar over the now two front wheels and pushing himself along with his left leg.

Next up a guy and his girlfriend walking along and she was to his left side and biting him behind the arm on his back side. She was holding on with her teeth like for dear life.

Seems like most of the girlfriends and girls not attached with a guy had on tight pants or short shorts. The wives appeared to dress more loose and comfortable.

Lots and lots of baby strollers and lots of young kids with parents. Nothing like family day at an off road event.

I bought tee chits for my granddaughter and wife (they were not there) that said "Girls Get Dirty Too". I called home to get the size first. Also picked up a couple of videos on the Rubicon Trail and Panamint Canyon trails.

Sorry I did not take my camera so no pictures.

They have downsized for the last couple of years. It's in three buildings one large and two about half size. Still a lot of outside setups and race cars and 4x4 trucks etc. I've always went on Sunday before this year and the last two years the crowd was down from previously. Yesterday there seemed to be a larger crowd. But maybe that's because it was Saturday.

BORING!

Okay, I put all my photos in it's own thread in the Off Roading forum (as did Ken), here: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=55596

Barry A. - 10-10-2011 at 09:00 AM

TW---------in an above post you mention "Panamint Canyon trail"---------are you referring to Surprise Canyon up to Panamint City??? If so, I thought that it was permanently closed by the Park Service (Death Valley NP) since it washes out from time to time???

We talked to a character in Ballerat last week, and he said it was permanently closed to vehicles!?!?!?!?!?

Barry

TMW - 10-10-2011 at 09:37 AM

Surprise Canyon is closed I should have said Trails as it covers several trails in the Panamint range. These are the Rick Russell series. I talked to him about going to Panamint City and in the video he does just that before it was closed. They had to winch up 5 or 6 sloping water falls. Overall a very good video.

Barry A. - 10-10-2011 at 11:28 AM

Thanks for clearing that up, TW-----appreciate it.

I was lucky enough to drive to Panamint City in a 2-wheel drive Chevy pickup back in 1954 before the "floods" took out the road. It was just very steep back then, but not a real challenge----------spent the day poking around the old city ruins---------very cool place back then, and probably still is. I remember my skinny tires were partially bald and we worried a little about that going over rocks-------but made it with no flats all the way from San Diego, and back.

barry
