southwest swell that originated off the coast of New Zealand,
mcfez - 9-1-2011 at 03:53 PM
20 foot waves in Newport Beach, flowing over the "The Wedge." The high tide is also flooding out parts of Newport Peninsula
Wondered where it was coming from----thanks. We have had no beach for a couple of days.mcfez - 9-1-2011 at 04:56 PM
Balboa was like a second home for me...I have never seen waves top the The Wedge ever. It must be a awesome sight.Udo - 9-1-2011 at 05:06 PM
I was at Camp Pendleton RV beach this morning, and the surf HAD to be over 12' high.
The local lifeguards did not let any of the Marine surfers go out and closed the beach altogether.Curt63 - 9-1-2011 at 05:06 PM
In North San Diego county, most spots are closing out.
Waves were hitting the bottom of Oceanside pier and really shaking the pier.
Only 2 guys were out surfing the closeout bombs at the pier
Im waiting for this one to settle down a little before I paddle out.Woooosh - 9-1-2011 at 05:23 PM
Waves do look 11-15' in centro Rosarito. A few "jet ski assisted surfers" out this morning. Nice sandy bottom here to eat. Good clams too. Big
waves but water level low- barely to the seawall.
BTW: The beaches nearby in San Diego have been closed on and off the past week from an (alleged) Great White sighting.

Oceanside is 10'. I was the only guy out at the harbor. Nothing rideable though - just punishment.BornFisher - 9-1-2011 at 09:31 PM
Well the south facing locations are getting bombed! K-38, long lulls, followed by 30 wave sets, some waves looking like waterfalls. Strong north winds
screwed things up a bit, but Califia was calm and had tow-in crews out there. Wish I was out there paddling over those cliffs, errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, OK
just wish I had pulled off the road and watched! What a show!DavidE - 9-1-2011 at 11:08 PM
Good surf down at pescadero.willyAirstream - 9-2-2011 at 12:50 PM

We drove the road through Tijuana to Ensenada today and the surf was bigger than I have ever seen it on that road. Very few surfers out in that
stuff. The news in San Diego claims that it was caused by a major storm in Antartica and would last a few more days.
Not Baja ... thank God

Hi, tiotomasbcs

I think it was called "The Den of Socrates" or "Socrates Den", but age may be interfering with my memory.
The Pussycat Theatre (XXX) became the Balboa Theatre and featured "Rocky Horror" events on the weekends for many years. Then they went legit and
then, out of business. We saw the last showing, "Henry V".
Life on Balboa on the weekends was difficult in the "80's, because Friday and Saturday was cruise night. The NB police issued residents special
"Orange Ball" stickers so you could get around the blockade to go home.
I am not sentimental about the Wedge. Too many stupid people are attracted to large weather events. I saw the jetty underwater in the "70's more
than once. and knew of pedestrians strolling on the jetty who were washed into the sea and drowned in those conditions.
Too many friends of friends and others children ended up in Hoag Hospital because they were teenagers and thought that they were "bullet-proof" in
the water. Becoming a quadriplegic at age sixteen is a damn tragedy.bajabass - 9-5-2011 at 11:39 AM
Glad you had a good weekend of surf Woody! Sorry about the troll response to my post.woody with a view - 9-5-2011 at 12:23 PM

A new swell hit.
I surfed O'side harbor yesterday in trunks with 66 degree water and about 2' overhead.
Real nice waves!
My buddy surfed epic Trestles yesterday with all the tour pros in the water warming up for the contest. He didnt get many waves, but what a show!
The Trestles contest starts today. It will be live streamed online, but I dont know the site
