2011 Baja 1000 Race

TMW - 9-25-2011 at 09:16 AM

SCORE has posted a proposed map for the 1000 race. Looks like a combination Baja 500 and SF 250 course.

https://www.score-international.com/races/1136/44th_Annual_T...

Thanks TW !

Am I understanding that the Contingency is on Thursday the 17th and the race begins the next morning?

Thanks, BW

David K - 9-25-2011 at 11:29 AM

That's the way it looks to me Chuck, 17th Registration. 18th-19th race. 20th Trophy presentation.

Thanks, looks like we'll be at the Sulphur Mine location just West of our place...

Never seen the 1000 in real life. Think I may go camp at Punta Cabras to check it out.

Pole Line Rd. Baja

Ken Cooke - 9-25-2011 at 12:48 PM

I'm thinking about getting the Jeeps together to run the Pole Line Road which will run near Stage 4 of this race. Tentatively, Nov. 19-22nd with a wind down in San Felipe for 1 day. Maybe, we will get a chance to buy Baja 1000 regalia in San Felipe! :bounce:

Lots of folks camp around there to watch the race, probably will be some pit action as well. Just be aware that it is pretty late in the race so you'll see most of the bikes and all of the cars after dark. You will also see fewer racers, in that attrition will have reduced the number of vehicles, both bikes and cars.

That will be pretty close to the half way point in the race, so the fastest racers will get there about 7 hours from when they start... If Trophy Trucks begin at 10:30 am... it will be dark for most of the four wheel action when they reach the sulfur mine.

An ideal spot would be along the section between Borrego Wash and San Matias Pass where the race runs twice!

TMW - 9-26-2011 at 07:27 PM

Just figure 50mph for the fastest vehicles and plan on when they will be there. Everyone else watch for the headlights.

Exactly! The sulfur mine is about 350 miles from the start... at 50 mph = 7 hours. I am guessing the first bike will leave at 6:30 am and the first 4 wheeled racer (Trophy Truck) at about 10:30... ? just a guess based on past races.

David K - 10-12-2011 at 05:08 PM

Just over a month from now... expect an increase in area traffic and pre-running the coarse the two weeks before the race Nov. 18.

It's great to see that the 1000 will avoid the road south of Puertecitos to Gonzaga Bay...guess somebody finally figured out that the race wrecks the road. I know that SCORE pays the Mexicans for damage to the road but, of course, that money gets spent on stuff that is more fun than grading dirt that has a two inch washboard on top of race produced "swoopy doos" that put you into the air at any speed above about 20 MPH. The unpaved road south of Puertecitos has been graded pretty well to support the trucks on the highway project and another Baja 1000 on that part of it would wreck it.

I love the 1000 but "NIMY"....since the repair never, ever got done.

Speaking of the Baja 1000 ... just finished watching Bruce Brown's: Baja 1000.. which was brought up by another Nomad

Thank God HE did it and for the recommendation ... a real treat just to see Ensenada in 1968, and what MEX 1 used to be like ....

Not even talking about the race and equipment of that period..

The "old" days down in Baja... used to drive an old 57 VW myself ... forgot how good they really were .. down in the Baja... a really cheap off road vehicle for the day... got mine in 64 for $200 with a wrecked front end .. junk yard (WOW remember those days) $35 dollars for hood, two fenders and a windshield .. never put a bumper on it... license plate was held on with some #10 wire...

Curt63 - 10-18-2011 at 09:05 AM

I'll be out on the course this weekend between Colonet and Pt San Jose.

We'll be just trail riding (dont want to spill my beer speed).

Definately one of the more dangerous things I do in Baja!

Sure hope a pre runner doesn't kill me

honda tom - 10-19-2011 at 10:48 AM

looking like a 11:30 start for 4 wheel vehicles... (unless enough drivers complain) San Felipe (town) 8PM mine 1.5 hrs before

David K - 10-19-2011 at 11:00 AM

Right... so unless you want to see mostly HIDs in your eyes, find a place to watch closer to the start!

TMW - 10-19-2011 at 01:11 PM

The official 1000 map is out with course notes. Looks like the only change was after Borrego the course follows the steel power lines to San Matias instead of near the hwy.

How hard will it be to get thru Ensenada from San Diego on Nov. 18th with the Baja 1000 going? plan on leaving around noon.

I've been to the start of the baja 250 and that was alot of people just trying to figure out when I should leave SD to get to San Quintin before sunset.

Thanks for any help!

TMW - 11-3-2011 at 11:39 AM

It depends on when you will be going thru. Assuming you are going south on hwy 1 just stay on hwy 1 when you get to Ensenada. I mean don't come down to the water front area. Hwy 1 bypasses the start area. The start is in front of the Riviera Convention Center. Bikes at 6:30am with the last bike about 7:30am. First truck at 11:30am with the last car about 1pm. They start every 30 seconds. Ave. Lopez Mateos, the street behind the Center will be closed in that area. There is two way traffic in front of the Center on the normally south bound lanes but I would avoid the area completely.

I'm not sure how it's marked but hwy1 will go straight and 1D curves to the right to head to the water front. That's what the AAA Baja map shows. Hwy 1 joins Calle 10A then turns right at Ave Ruiz then left to Calle 9A and finally right on Ave Reforma and south.

It's a zoo... why would you go through Ensenada on that day if you don't want to see any of the race activity? If you must, then do as TW says... use the inland (left/ straight) route at the split before entering town.

Shaner - 11-3-2011 at 12:35 PM

Thanks for your help! My wife, son(1 year old) and I have the week off for Thanksgiving and want to just cruz down, she's not that into the race but Im just happy she wants to go down. The plan is to get down to Loreto but we need to be at my parents house in San Felipe - Bahia Santa Maria by Friday the 25th for some Thanksgiving Turkey, so its kind of up in the air.

We dont have a room friday night reserved but Sat. and possibly Sunday we are staying at San Ignacio Springs, my other idea was to drive down to my parents house friday the 18th and stay the night then head to San Ignacio thru Gonzaga(love the road status updates on this site!) early Sat. morning...either way its looking like alot of traffic.

Again thanks!

TMW - 11-3-2011 at 12:48 PM

Actually there will probably be more traffic in the San Felipe area on Friday since the race will spend a lot of time in that area. So chase crews will be all over it running back and forth and you may know how stupid and crasy some of them can be. There will be chase crews on the pacific side later in the afternoon, mostly after the 4 wheelers leave.

Two Baja Nomads (maybe more) have homes at Bahia Santa Maria.

Shaner - 11-3-2011 at 01:52 PM

Cool we are on the southside, my grandfather was and still is one of the partners of one of the first round houses on the beach, he and his classmates at SDSU camped there before having the house built in the 60's i think, it was 10+ partners now down to 3, some partners that left built homes in Santa Maria a few houses down. My dad's house is right next door, my favorite place to be!

David K - 11-3-2011 at 02:03 PM

10-4, we used to fish on the bay (we called it The Lagoon) before Aniceto Madueña home-steaded the area. First round houses built on the bay (named after his daughter Maria) about 1968 or 69. In 1972, I had a vey bad motorbike crash on the runway road just down from the Madueña home/ office... They all knew about me back then (I was 14). We rented a lot on the bay, but never built on it... In 1978, the bay radically started to change and many round houses were lost (including the lot where we had leased). After that, new homes went up along the non-bay beach (Playa Hermosa and up to the bay's peninsula).

Shaner - 11-3-2011 at 02:39 PM

Very cool! Lots of great memories down there, looking forward to more!

I haven't tried the link provided above, but my direct log-on with RDC for W-man is working fine. I'm not doing any tracking at this point (no 'personal' reason this time) but may later in the day.

Kamloops is still represented:

"...ok we still have big Al Perrett in the race on Richard Jackson's team, along with Bill Nichols,I'm not sure of the number, but there are only 2 entry's in plus 60...."

Al and Bill are pals from way back....Al is 73 or 74 years old and rides circles around most folks....hardcore team !

Real cluster#@() going on right now. Conflicting reports about a jack-knifed truck blocking the course at ~ RM 4.5. Talk about a re-start for TTs????

Allen R

David K - 11-18-2011 at 01:24 PM

Yah, I see them all bunched up just outside Ensenada... and now they are moving past the blockage... Jesse James followed by Gustavo...

[Edited on 11-18-2011 by David K]

bufeo - 11-18-2011 at 01:27 PM

Someone on RDC pointed out how much this change in start time will affect the pits where light-bars are to be set. The guess is that some of the lower classes will be in the dark by RM60. Hope their lights are all set at the Start.

Allen R

P.S. Just heard someone on WM talk about getting a light-bar BACK to RM 77.

ok - i can get wild bill now and hear WX man on his feed.

13 TTs went off but they are bringing them all back and a restart cause a semi is blocking the course.

they are going to move the start line to beyond where the semi is causing the course problem.

Hey back atcha, Mike.

I can't understand why some (actually a lot) of folks are not getting WX feed. My PC is ancient (12-years old) and I'm having no trouble with any of the feeds. The video was down for a while during the re-start, but is supposed to be back up after the 'situation' is re-solved.

Wow! WX is being inundated with calls. Bob's going to need some help at some point.

The 'jump' at RM 577 doesn't look good either.

They have a spot off the Observatory road and Bob (Weatherman) parks by the telescopes (or used to)... that is at 9,280 feet ASL, and about 5+ miles WNW of Diablo Mountain.

It's been almost an hour since the trophy trucks took off the line and the class 1 racers aren't happy! Hey at least the lead cars won't have dust.

Unfortunately the smaller classes will be racing mostly in the dark. This messes up plans for a ton of people. Racers already have their light bars down at Borrego as they planned to put lights on there and have no way of having their chase crews relocate. Due to the two hour delay in start time racers will either have to survive with minimal lighting or relocate their chase crews and light bars...yikes!

Click this Udo: http://www.race-dezert.com/home/2011-score-baja-1000-live-co... and just scroll down to the runing info. ticket on the right, or further down the page for the live map... you can zoom in on the map.

The Live Video Feed ended after the last racer and the off road ambulance left the start... about 2:30. The feed will come back on as the racers finish tonight (about 8 pm for the bikes and about 3 am for the Trophy Trucks, was the annoucers guess).

go to live action and click on the BFG race relay 12 link. it is Wild Bill on top of that mountain they base every race, mt. Diablo i think it is.

i still can't get the WX man feed of RDC.

just reported the locals built a huge unsafe jump on the course RM 577 by Erindera sp? and they need Score officials or cops to go take it down.

They have a spot off the Observatory road and Bob (Weatherman) parks by the telescopes (or used to)... that is at 9,280 feet ASL, and about 5+ miles WNW of Diablo Mountain.

125 mph? I've never gone over 110mph. That's was on a paved road. I thought I was gonna die.

I may be a dork, but I'm watching Dust To Glory right now. The racing website don't work on my iPad. :barf:

David K - 11-18-2011 at 06:41 PM

That is cool... I just started hearing the Weatherman a half hour ago on Race-Dezert, and I never could hear Wild Bill (BFG Relay 12) even after downloading the iTunes program asked for on the BFG site.:light:

Udo - 11-18-2011 at 06:42 PM

When we were in Italy, a couple of years ago, 125MPH was the minimum speed on the AUTOSTRADA, their version of a freeway.
The cars there are geared differently than here and therefore the high speeds do not necessarily equate to high RPMs.
We rented a small Volvo, and we eventually worked our way to around 140MPH (300KPH).
At that speed, one did not much time to think about the next exit. Most time we ended up getting off at the next exit ramp!

The lead Trophy Truck (Bryce Menzies) is nearing Arroyo Matomi .

Robby Gordon is in 5th place at this time, and Gary is right behind!

Okay, so you all have the links... Hope you can watch the race and hear the action.

Yes, we are ready. One Rubicon and an '05/'06 Unlimited are ready to tackle the Pole Line Road! It will be plenty of fun!:bounce:

David K - 11-18-2011 at 11:01 PM

Heading to bed, just had a look... and see Andy/ Scott McMillin got into the lead as they are on the course near Mike's Sky Rancho at 10 pm

At San Matias Scott McMillin first on the road as Menzies pulled over to pit. Scott now behind the wheel of the #31 truck and finally got around the Vanderwey/ LeDuc truck who are still running solid.
