Pottery

Ateo - 10-8-2011 at 10:56 AM

I'm doing a pottery run from Oceanside down to Rosarito soon. Anyone have a favorite pottery store in that artisan stretch from south Rosarito to Puerto Nuevo?

I went to Evergreen nursery yesterday and the $50 pots are the same you can get in Mex for $12.

Probably reasonable when you consider duty, transportation and labor.

SteveD - 10-8-2011 at 01:14 PM

We like the shop about 1/4 mile North of the shops in front of Fox Studios. It's a 2 story white building on the East side of the road. I think their name is Salvadori's.

BajaBlanca - 10-8-2011 at 01:27 PM

The most beautiful pottery pots I have ever seen are in ensenada ...

Exactly, that's why I'm going to straight to the source.

Half the fun of Rosarito is the 'drive by' of all the roadside shops. "Keep going, keep going. No, slow down. OK. STOP. STOP HERE!!!"

And you forgot---
"There, there we missed the best one. Turn Around, please."

"I can't just turn around anywhere. There will be more! "

"No, please that is the best place. "

"OK, now we are lost and do you have any idea how to get back there? "

Have fun and I have also heard that the one SteveD mentioned is a good one. We have not shopped in that area for a while.

Ateo - 10-8-2011 at 03:49 PM

Seems like all the stores sell the same stuff, and many do! Our favorite is just across from Gaviotas. Just need some pots for some cactus.....

EnsenadaDr - 10-8-2011 at 03:52 PM

Well, it depends on what kind of pottery...I just adore Talavera...I want a house full of it....

Nan&D - 10-8-2011 at 04:50 PM

Have you been through Tecate? There's some great places around km 5.

J.P. - 10-8-2011 at 05:12 PM

I love nice pottery In my collection I have some really nice Mat Ortiz pieces. there is a place in Ensenada where the Artsins show their work But most of mine came off of E Bay.
I would like very much to go over to the colony some day. maybe put it on my bucket list.

MATA ORTIZ

chrisx - 10-8-2011 at 05:23 PM

just south of Tecate on the Ensenada road is where real artists sell their own art

REAL artisans???

EnsenadaDr - 10-9-2011 at 08:59 AM

In La Bufadora, I picked up a Talavera fruit bowl that was signed supposedly in Puebla where they make the stuff, but how do you know the signature is real?

Our best pot from Mata Ortiz ----we have not been there for a few years, but it is a great trip. Take lots of bubble wrap!

But since ateo is looking for something for planting cactus, I don't think this would be appropriate.

For plant pots, as others suggested, we go to the Tecate area. It is just so much easier crossing the border both ways.

At the La Buf Mall, the sig is probably real if it looks like this:

Haven't been thru Tecate in about 5 years. I'll check next time I decide to bypass san ysidro. Thanks!

Ateo - 10-9-2011 at 09:25 AM

Ok, Tecate it is! Time to switch it up a bit and head east. Looking forward to it. Haven't been to Tecate since 2007. My wife can buy some pan, we'll go pottery hunting and enjoy the easier border crossing. DianaT, that pot is awesome! I'll take some pictures of what I get and post when I return.

Nan&D - 10-9-2011 at 11:08 AM

Hope you have lots of room! You might go home with a fountain too....

Don't forget the Cuban cigars.

Thats a Very nice piece I am looking for a white one with black trim.

Curt63 - 10-9-2011 at 07:00 PM

Tecate is the source for most of it.

DianaT - 10-9-2011 at 07:55 PM

JP

This is a white one we bought for our son on our last trip there--

And here is one of the sanders in the village

ATEO, once you get all those beautiful planter pots, think about Mata Ortiz for the inside decorations---the story from there is one of a unique success and, well, it does become addictive.

J.P. - 10-9-2011 at 08:04 PM

Wow that' the pot I was talking about I have a black one simular to it , We have 9 Mata Ortiz in our collection and several others that are beautiful but none Nice as the Mata Ortiz.:cool::cool:

DENNIS - 10-9-2011 at 08:17 PM

Mata Ortiz pottery is losing it's value due to over-production. Soon it will be next to worthless unless signed by a notable artist.

There is so much there and so many close by places that are wonderful.

To think that one person, Juan Quezada, made such a difference.

We so need another trip there. A part of the joy is meeting the potters---as they say, up close and personal.

Yes, it is a concern in the Mata Ortiz community and there is a lot of competition between the local barrios.

We just buy what we like. And we did research the different artists so we have some that have gone up in value and some have not---but that is not why we have bought several pieces.

And I wish I could create the absolute worst pottery that came from them. We have one rather flawed piece in our home in BA and people---including me----still think it is a great piece of pottery

Ateo - 10-10-2011 at 08:17 AM

Ok, so about 5 km south of Tecate on the road to Ensenada would be a good place to start? Thanks. Thanks for posting those pics Diana T.

Nan&D - 10-10-2011 at 08:25 AM

yes, you'll see a few places. One on the left heading south is our favorite for garden pots as they have lots that are still left the natural clay colour rather than being painted. You can varathane them (flat or satin keeps the natural look) on the outside for long lasting outside life. The insides can be painted with tar, or varathaned. They also have great statuary cement pieces for the garden.

You can find Talavera sinks on Ebay, in La Paz and Mulege and probably in south Rosarito Beach.

I never remember the name of the tile and sink place we like so well in Ensenada, but it is easy to find. It is on the main street after the turn south and before Costco and Walmart. It is on the west side of the highway --- quite small and on the s/w corner where the Ford Dealer is on the n/w corner.

We have bought both a sink and hand painted tile there and we bought both on our way north and he held them there so we could pick them up on the way south.

This is my favorite shop in La Paz:

Ateo - 6-12-2012 at 05:13 PM

Thanks all for the recommendations. DianaT -- I know that intersection. I'll check out.

DavidE - 6-14-2012 at 03:27 PM

Ijole!

The last time I priced a genuine single place setting of Talavera in Puebla, it cost siescientos pesos! There are too many talaveras falsos out there for my taste.

Yeah check out their work with the broken pottery. Take a look in the bathroom for a show of color! I may have bought out all their broken pieces yesterday to tile a bar.
Oh... check those beautiful tortilla warmers too! Great stuff here, many, many sinks!!

Ateo - 6-15-2012 at 08:20 AM

BornFisher: I will take your advice. Thanks!

Leno's business is located on the Tecate-Ensenada highway . He is on the left side of the highway just past Km. 15 as you are traveling south of Tecate. There is a nice pullout next to his lot.

You will see his beautiful pottery out in front of his place. You might have to give a holler to get his attention. As he might be in his shop up on the little hill or in the house to the left of his gate.
