Gov. of Baja's Take on the San Felipe Malecon

sancho - 10-31-2011 at 11:27 AM

Personally, Sat. nite in summer on the San Felipe Malecon
is a favorite of mine. It's warm, many vendors, slightly caotic, practicing
my Spanish with the Borrachos, while they insist on having their arm around you, good fun. Apparently the Gov. does
not share my opinion:

TIJUANA - The San Felipe malecón "smells like pee," said state governor José
Guadalupe Osuna Millán.

The state leader repeated that expression twice during a meeting of the State
Public Security Council carried out at the 28th Infantry Battalion, which was
attended by General of the Second Military Region, Alfonsol Duarte Múgica,
ministers and mayors.

The chief executive mentioned this when the state secretary of tourism, Juan
Tintos Funcke, referred to the Baja California tourist zones.

Borrachos relieving themselves in the sand where it hardly ever rains. Yup, the Gov. could be on to something.

redhilltown - 10-31-2011 at 10:53 PM

The San Felipe malecon???? I could think of a LOT of other places/things/cartels besides there for the Gov to get peey about...(pun intended!)

desertcpl - 11-1-2011 at 10:07 AM

almost as long as i can remember the Malecon in San Felipe has been trashy, I have never understood why the city doesn't clean this mess up, and offer more rest rooms and trash dumpsters,
this is especially true during a Holiday week end, most times it can be just disgusting

Barry A. - 11-1-2011 at 10:20 AM

----probably because it costs a small fortune to build and maintain public restrooms, and trash facilities. That is usually the problem.

Of course the answer, which will NEVER be realized apparently, is "personal responsibility" of all involved, and/or to address the trash with volunteers.

People look at me like I am nuts when I pick up trash in the Safeway parking lot going, and coming from the store. but it makes ME feel good, so I continue. :light:

Barry

desertcpl - 11-1-2011 at 10:54 AM

I understand what your saying about personal responsibility, I agree with this statement,
but you would think the city of san felipe, that almost entirely relies on tourists ( they have really no other industry)
would invest in a infrastructure that would promote tourists.
one being the clean up ( on going ) the Malecon and the beaches of this area

Mengano - 11-1-2011 at 10:55 AM

Due to the shoreline location, septic system is not doable. They would have to install sewage plumbing and a lift pump. In other words, fuhgeddaboudit.

I agree
San Felipe will just have to live with it, but its unfortunate that they cant come together on an issue like this, it really does hurt every one in town in one way or the other
San Felipe is such a beautiful location

bajalou - 11-1-2011 at 12:58 PM

There are restrooms at each end of the malecon. Even when they're open, how do you get drunks to walk that far???

desertcpl - 11-1-2011 at 02:17 PM

you need Pee Pee police

mcfez - 11-1-2011 at 02:33 PM

The San Felipe malecón "smells like pee,"

Ya...it does at times. ....bout the same as the Santa Monica Pier! it can be trashy at times too......bout the same as Muscle beach, S. Ca.

I just think that the Politicians have a bad smell themselves.

I have seen the malecone clean..... most of the times.

Thankfully I remember San Felipe before there was a malecon. Unfortunately the entire town seemed to go downhill after that. Each year the whole town seemed to just get dirtier. I haven't returned for over 20 years but it is still on my bucket list to make a long weekend just to see all of the changes.

We are in San Felipe now we have been here 2 days it is so sad to see the place so vacant when we go out to eat we dont look for our favorite places we look for one that is still open. Its really going too have to pick up for the Shrimp festival. we love it over here the weather is great it is a refreshing break from the other side
As another Nomad would say the Govenor can KISS MY GRASS, he has far more important things to worry about than the Pee Pee Smell on the Malacon.:P:P

Yeah, maybe he needs to drive on some of the roads

Patch the potholes and pick up the trash for starters!!!

baja1943 - 11-2-2011 at 07:20 AM

If the gov. thinks SF smells like pee he surely doesn't want to visit Deno in Rio Linda.

your right that the down town is dying a slow death, we have very good friends that live north of town, El Dorado Ranch, the last couple of years they have commented about the Malecon and down town being void of tourist. years past the Malecon was a favorite place for all to enjoy, not now, alot of new businesses have gone in at the north campos, so they are just staying there for shopping, restaurants, bars , gas, he was just saying to me that they have no reason to go into town now, they find downtown and the Malecon depressing

He should be concerned about the pee smell at San Felipe... tourism is a big revenue for the city and it isn't the only beach in Mexico, afterall. San Felipe businesses are suffering... they don't need another reason for people to not return there to spend money.

Woooosh - 11-2-2011 at 09:43 AM

On another thread someone is asking for 55 gallon trash bags to help clean the city- because La Paz can't afford to buy them. Trash and pee.... The next call for help will be for a man with a flute...

Bajafun777 - 11-2-2011 at 06:28 PM

Haven't been to San Felipe in some time but they use to keep the malecon clean but the pictures here make for a different story now. What a shame just not cool for anyone like that.
Note, when I was down in La Paz last year the malecon was very clean, easy going people walking, laughing day and night without any incidents that I could see. So, somebody must be picking up that trash or making sure you aren't throwing it on the ground. I just love walking on the malecons and enjoying watching & listening to others they enjoy it too. Hope, San Felipe gets it together and gets the malecon cleaned up before I take my buddy down there in a couple of weeks.
My buddy retired a few years agon and now insists he needs to to re-visit San Felipe since he hasn't been there since got out of the service too many years ago to count,LOL. Take Care&Travel Safe---"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777

David K - 11-2-2011 at 06:34 PM

With so many miles of awesome beach beginning just south of San Felipe, why would ANYONE go to a beach in front of a big town or city?

Photo taken this year, just 20 miles (1/2 hour) from San Felipe:

Obviously just after some event - Tecate and other tents still set up - not you're everyday situation. And a guy sweeping.

krafty - 11-2-2011 at 07:37 PM

Wow-we were going to take fam o/n the first week of Dec. May have to rethink this, especially if there are no restaurants open.

bajalou - 11-2-2011 at 09:39 PM

There are restaurants open in the downtown area, just not a s many. Also curio shops etc.

Bajafun777 - 11-2-2011 at 10:01 PM

bajalou, I was hoping that was the case and not the new dirty look for the malecon. DavidK, sometimes you have to do the downtown thing, especially when the urge to sit at a cantina hits along with looking for what local eatery is offering. The beach is great but again sometimes--------LOL. Take Care& Travel Safe---"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777

Bajachillin - 11-2-2011 at 11:34 PM

They have actually been doing a decent job of keeping it cleaned up lately. As for the restaurants there are still plenty to choose from. There have been a couple of new ones open up. Whether they make it or not, time will tell. Plus starting after the shrimp festival the Melecon is suppose to be reconstructed.

A lot of the roads have been redone, just not the ones you are likely to be driving on.

I have been to the Club Miramar more than once in my years... In fact, the Miramar was my first 'legal' entering and drinking at a bar experience, when I was 18... when the first SCORE Baja 1000 went through, Nov. 1975.

Need to tell him that it's better to be pi**ed on if you're a malecon, than to be pi**ed off if you're the govenor.

Cool, I was there for that race... camped at Club de Pesca. One of the Check points was at the south end of town. The ABC camera crew had hired little Mexican kids to throw chickens in front of the racers as they pulled into the checkpoint so it looked like they were in a really rural area

I once walked across into Mex from Guatemala, bussed
up to TJ, stopping at many seaside towns/cities, La Paz's
is as pretty and comfortable as I ran across. Never seen
sunsets like LP. And I like SF, and as Bajalou points out
that pic of trash and tents is after one of the events,
race, shrimp festival, etc. That in no way is typical of
the SF malecon, actually quite the opposite. I'm old enough
to remember when trash in the US in public places
was not as much a priority as it is now

Too funny... just like with political stories, altering the facts to make it look the way you want it to!

We watched the racers heading south at Valle de Trinidad (where they turned towards the Pacific for the run down to Punta Prieta area), then went to San Felipe (Miramar Bar), then down to the Sulfur Mine to watch them northbound, heading back to Ensenada. We camped the rest of the weekend at Nuevo Mazatlan.

DK, A couple yrs ago I was on the Annual Sand Dollar hunt
in front of Percebu, minus tide, far enough out with
a sand berm in between, so the houses were not visible, very
tranquil, quiet not a sound, I see why you hunker down
there
