Gov. of Baja's Take on the San Felipe Malecon

Personally, Sat. nite in summer on the San Felipe Malecon
is a favorite of mine. It's warm, many vendors, slightly caotic, practicing
my Spanish with the Borrachos, while they insist on having their arm around you, good fun. Apparently the Gov. does
not share my opinion:

* * * * *

TIJUANA - The San Felipe malecón "smells like pee," said state governor José
Guadalupe Osuna Millán.

The state leader repeated that expression twice during a meeting of the State
Public Security Council carried out at the 28th Infantry Battalion, which was
attended by General of the Second Military Region, Alfonsol Duarte Múgica,
ministers and mayors.

The chief executive mentioned this when the state secretary of tourism, Juan
Tintos Funcke, referred to the Baja California tourist zones.

Borrachos relieving themselves in the sand where it hardly ever rains. Yup, the Gov. could be on to something.

almost as long as i can remember the Malecon in San Felipe has been trashy, I have never understood why the city doesn't clean this mess up, and offer more rest rooms and trash dumpsters,
this is especially true during a Holiday week end, most times it can be just disgusting

----probably because it costs a small fortune to build and maintain public restrooms, and trash facilities. That is usually the problem.

Of course the answer, which will NEVER be realized apparently, is "personal responsibility" of all involved, and/or to address the trash with volunteers.

People look at me like I am nuts when I pick up trash in the Safeway parking lot going, and coming from the store. but it makes ME feel good, so I continue. :light:

I understand what your saying about personal responsibility, I agree with this statement,
but you would think the city of san felipe, that almost entirely relies on tourists ( they have really no other industry)
would invest in a infrastructure that would promote tourists.
one being the clean up ( on going ) the Malecon and the beaches of this area

Due to the shoreline location, septic system is not doable. They would have to install sewage plumbing and a lift pump. In other words, fuhgeddaboudit.

I agree
San Felipe will just have to live with it, but its unfortunate that they cant come together on an issue like this, it really does hurt every one in town in one way or the other
San Felipe is such a beautiful location

There are restrooms at each end of the malecon. Even when they're open, how do you get drunks to walk that far???

The San Felipe malecón "smells like pee,"

Ya...it does at times. ....bout the same as the Santa Monica Pier! it can be trashy at times too......bout the same as Muscle beach, S. Ca.

I just think that the Politicians have a bad smell themselves.

I have seen the malecone clean..... most of the times.

Thankfully I remember San Felipe before there was a malecon. Unfortunately the entire town seemed to go downhill after that. Each year the whole town seemed to just get dirtier. I haven't returned for over 20 years but it is still on my bucket list to make a long weekend just to see all of the changes.

Its really going too have to pick up for the Shrimp festival. we love it over here the weather is great it is a refreshing break from the other side
As another Nomad would say the Govenor can KISS MY GRASS, he has far more important things to worry about than the Pee Pee Smell on the Malacon.:P:P

If the gov. thinks SF smells like pee he surely doesn't want to visit Deno in Rio Linda.

your right that the down town is dying a slow death, we have very good friends that live north of town, El Dorado Ranch, the last couple of years they have commented about the Malecon and down town being void of tourist. years past the Malecon was a favorite place for all to enjoy, not now, alot of new businesses have gone in at the north campos, so they are just staying there for shopping, restaurants, bars , gas, he was just saying to me that they have no reason to go into town now, they find downtown and the Malecon depressing

He should be concerned about the pee smell at San Felipe... tourism is a big revenue for the city and it isn't the only beach in Mexico, afterall. San Felipe businesses are suffering... they don't need another reason for people to not return there to spend money.

On another thread someone is asking for 55 gallon trash bags to help clean the city- because La Paz can't afford to buy them. Trash and pee.... The next call for help will be for a man with a flute...
