Ave Internacional/TJ CLOSED

bajadock - 11-7-2011 at 01:14 PM

From Frontera today, beginning today, Ave Internacional(from border crossing toward TJ Playas) will be closed 3-4 months of construction/repaving?

Should be fun. Anyone crossing today?

Ateo - 11-7-2011 at 01:18 PM

I had heard they were gonna double deck the road to make it quicker and more direct for tourists to just haul ass thru TJ to the first toll booth. I read that a few years ago in the SD paper.

Yikkkeeeessss!!!! 3-4 Baja months = mucho tiempo! Bummer!

Ateo - 11-7-2011 at 01:57 PM

Yeah, and the article says 2 years till completion so that really means 5.

willardguy - 11-8-2011 at 10:04 AM

yikes! so whats the key to getting in and out of TJ and beyond?

Udo - 11-8-2011 at 10:07 AM

If going to Rosarito and close there...cross at Otay and take Corridor 2000 south.
If you still want to cross at SY, keep going on the right lanes and they will take you past the COSTCO. Drive another 1/2 mile to the McDonalds and make a right. Stay on the main road and follow the main traffic. This will take you to the North End of Rosarito.
From there you may go anywhere you wish.:bounce:

You know, I don't get it. Many of the construction workers in Mexico work at a snail's pace but you get the same workers and put them to work in the State's and they are some of the hardest, fastest workers around. What's up with that?

Udo - 11-8-2011 at 10:36 AM

In the US, they get paid by the hour. In Mexico, they get paid by the job!

This photo is this morning- from Playas to downtown TJ. Not good to say the least. We need to get to to San Diego from Rosarito this afternoon- but will take the 5&10 all the way.

Can't wait to see how long it will take before it needs repairs........

Woooosh - 11-8-2011 at 11:55 AM

I'm not sure the current construction has anything to do with the double-decker toll road project. They'll probably finish doing what they are doing and then tear it all up again. Seems that is what they do on the toll road all the time.

Woooosh - 11-8-2011 at 11:57 AM

700 cars per lane... hope we get there. geeesh

Where did you hear that? Mexican workers are paid by the hour.

SDRonni - 11-8-2011 at 05:56 PM

Is their easy signage to get from Otay to Corridor 2000????

Woooosh - 11-8-2011 at 07:00 PM

The closure is only going towards the border, the way back is open. Actually at 5pm both directions were open (go figure). Wait was only 3 hours. Took the 5&10 all the way from Rosarito to Zona Rio in TJ and got in line right at the mall (a block before the CostCo).

Ateo - 11-8-2011 at 07:02 PM

Woooosh, thanks for update. Heading down to Baja this weekend. Need real time updates from real experiences. Thanks.

J.P. - 11-8-2011 at 07:12 PM

While working on the Southbound Side I thought the detour was well marked and controlled If they do the same this time it should be ok.

BooJumMan - 11-9-2011 at 06:17 AM

So is traffic backed up to and from the border, or just one direction?

Just got my Sentri pass this week, and now looks like I won't be able to do day trips now... I can't freaking believe it. I don't mind going to Otay but I've never crossed there before.

Ateo - 11-9-2011 at 02:25 PM

Any updates?

Came south through SY today around 1:30 and it was open....both directions.

Woooosh - 11-9-2011 at 06:01 PM

From the photos and my experience Tuesday I'd say the big problem is mornings heading from Playas towards the border. People getting to the via rapida that takes you across town are stuck in the same two lanes out of Playas all the way to the Smart & Final (the ramp up to the SY border crossing). Eventually they will get serious about the work and it won't be re-opened intermittently. I think this is a water drainage road project although I don't know how they will resolve it. The northbound side floods every storm.

Ateo - 11-9-2011 at 06:04 PM

Dennis and wooooosh, thanks for the update!

It's a pleasure, although you do know what we saw today has nothing to do with tomorrow. Specific start times in Mexico are only suggestions.

I exited through Tecate this AM at around 10:00 AM and it was crowded....for this day and time anyway. Usually, it's about a five minute wait....today was 40 min.. Even the inspector commented on the heavy traffic.

Alright, so I'm heading south bound manana. I guess the road is open and just fine - or maybe hell. I think I may just do Otay.

You'll be fine. Just go for it, always keeping in mind which way is South.

YES...

Here they are from just over a year ago (as posted on Baja Nomad Trip Reports trip to Las Pintas):

Part 1, Friday 9-17-10

A quick weekend adventure was in order from my birthday, so we headed south to Baja! Our destination for the evening was El Rosario's Baja Cactus Motel.

We left California at the Otay Border about 6:30 pm, Friday afternoon...

The line going into Mexico moved quickly, and we did get a red light and pulled up to the customs officer standing between lanes, who quickly had us continue on (only an ice chest in the truck bed).

Ahead from the border, 1.1 miles is Blvd. Industrial where a left turn is made to get to the Corredor 2000 (formerly Blvd. 2000) which is a fast, easy freeway to the Ensenada highway, just south of Rosarito.

This is also the route to the Tecate Toll (Cuota) highway (Mex. 2-D).

About 5 miles down Blvd. Industrial is where the Corredor 2000 (to the right) and the Tecate Toll Highway (to the left) begin.

The sun was setting as we neared the end of the Corredor 2000 on the Pacific Coast.

The Corredor 2000 ends on the Free (Libre) Ensenada highway at Popotla, about 32 miles from the Otay Border. We went home via the Corredor 2000 and the Tecate Free Highway (Mex. 2) to the Tecate Border (38 miles from Mex. 1 at Popotla).

South of Ensenada at Maneadero, we enjoyed some yummy carne asada tacos at Los Poblanos (red taco shop on the east side of the road). From Maneadero to almost Ejido Uruapan (12 miles) they are widening the highway and there are a few miles of dirt and paved detours. The military checkpoint just beyond Uruapan (north of Santo Tomas) and again just north of El Rosario both waved us through southbound, but did an inspection northbound.

We arrived in El Rosario at 11:30 pm Friday night and enjoyed a great night's sleep at Baja Cactus...

Sorry. I made an assumption. It could happen.

I know I thought I was wrong once but was mistaken. :saint:

I will have an update on border area road conditions seeing how I will be flower hunting with the wifey tomorrow. :dudette:

Ateo - 11-15-2011 at 07:38 AM

The only thing closed is a stretch heading northbound on the steep hill section just south of the old Russian spy lookout building. Just follow the detour signs that link you to avenida segunda. It'll take you all the way to the border. Theyve turned a portion into a one way street.

I would sure like to get the full story on that place. I've heard all the rumors, but not from anyone who would really know the facts.
The roof used to be covered with antennas of various types and it was said they were keeping an eye on our naval operations in San Diego during the cold war. If that was true, it was so nice of Mexico to be so accomodating to enemys of the free world.

That's about all I know too Dennis! That building always stuck out. Looks out of place.....I wonder if the USA knew about it back in the day. If they did, all they would've needed to do was plant a bunch of trees on the us side of the fence to block the ruskies view.

Viva Sentri! :saint:

elgatoloco - 11-15-2011 at 07:04 PM

As reported southbound side is wide open and looking good. Northbound is closed from the interchange at bottom of hill and on up and over the top next to Russia house. There was traffice merging back on to the north side near the bootom of hill. We came back north via the Libre straight thru town to a 4 1/2 minute wait at Sentri. :dudette:
