OK, so you finally screw up the courage to buy that awesome lot down Baja way. You plan and plan and scrape together the cash to get your dream house by the water built. Everything is wonderful. And then you go and paint it beige.

Beige!

Every track house in the USA is painted a shade of beige. The color of dirt or sand. Drive through any neighborhood. It makes you want to scream! The monotony of it all!:P

Bust out of that mold amigos! How about seeing some mango, limon, azul or bugambilla? Have some fun with it. Be brave. After all, you were brave enough to take the plunge and build down here when all your stateside friends and relatives thought you were nuts...... I'm just sayin'.....

I asked some Mexican about the bright colors of their houses and they told me the bright colors mean it is a HAPPY household....so color away !!

DENNIS - 11-10-2011 at 01:59 PM

A little bit of Baja color imagination is a good thing....until it goes too far. When tasteless paint jobs go from festive and optimistic to a rendition of a Chucky Cheese, the line has been crossed.
Just my opinion.....humble, as always. Thank you for listening. :D

shari - 11-10-2011 at 02:32 PM

Juan told me that the women get to choose the colours to paint the house....thus the lovely oranges, pinks, purples, lime green etc.

So getting into the spirit, we painted our Sunset Casita....welll....sunset colour....and I LOVE it!

rhintransit - 11-10-2011 at 03:03 PM

my first palapa was violet and lime green. I loved it, the Mexicans shook their heads, the gringo women loved it, the men hated it. they, latter, thought all houses should be beige.

Oso - 11-10-2011 at 03:40 PM

You may be confusing beige with adobe. If the house is traditional style (You know, flat roof, protruding vigas, then adobe is the only appropriate color. Contemporary/modern style; whatever floats your boat.) I'm remembering a house in the historic section of Wilson, NC. The owner wanted to paint it an "unapproved" color, but by statute the local "Historic Commission" restricted him to any of three "approved" colors. So he chose all three, dividing the house into three even sections, one third of the house to each color. I can't remember if it looked like the Mexican, Italian or Irish flag but you get the idea.

mulegemichael - 11-10-2011 at 04:04 PM

mcfez....we painted our casa and guest casitas in mulege purple and EVERYONE loves it!...climb out of your box and look around!

We used a book called "MexiColor" for some color inspiration. Our last house was "Casa Blanca" so we went the other direction this time. Hey- It's only paint!

Everyone? To your face perhaps........
Get back into your purple box.

Bajahowodd - 11-10-2011 at 06:06 PM

What's a track house?:?:

CP - 11-10-2011 at 06:38 PM

I do love to see colorful homes and Wooosh's is gorgeous. And I love to visit friends' houses with their colorfully tiled and sinked and painted kitchens and bathrooms and patios. But I prefer to live in 'beige' house and kitchen with stainless appliances as I find it less stressfull visually for myself on an everyday basis.

Don't feel bad, it is well known that most men do not perceive color like women do, but a small segment of the ...hum...male population does...

More color....

And a VERY colourful guy....

El Jefe - 11-11-2011 at 01:17 PM

OK, ok, "tract house" not track house. Hard to keep the spelling straight in a wine-induced rant. I think a track house might be something pulled behind the train in the old days. AKA caboose. But all the ones I ever saw were bright red!

Thanks for all the great color pics! Beautiful.

Cypress - 11-11-2011 at 02:52 PM

motoged, Thanks.:D Send us some more.

Shari,
DT warned me to never listen to his advice....so I hope you didn't !

Is he giving advice here....?

...so I would let him lead....one of DT and one of my fav's:

shari - 11-12-2011 at 02:29 PM

Ged...you could easily publish a photo book as you have captured so well the essence of Baja...I'm proud to be your amiga.

motoged - 11-12-2011 at 03:28 PM

Shari,
I would love to have the time in Baja when I could simply ride around and take photos....fish tacos, photos, and Noche Buena beer....

motoged - 11-13-2011 at 05:54 PM

Bajafam,
It's not really a competition...but any time someone asks to look at my pics....well, grab a seat and sit down ;D

My best are on slides and I haven't scanned years' worth of 35 mm slides yet....

These are all taken with Canon or Panasonic point and shoots...

Glad to share and enjoy the views of others.

bajafam - 11-13-2011 at 06:03 PM

oh, I know, just having fun with ya. I love seeing your photos, and it gives me an excuse to look at some of ours, besides, I've been lazy about posting for a while, so Thanks!!

Paula - 11-13-2011 at 07:56 PM

motoged, your pictures are beautiful! Anytime you're showing them I'll happily pull up a chair.

Were they all taken in Baja? A few brought other places to mind.

Thank you sooooo much for posting them.

motoged - 11-14-2011 at 12:03 AM

Paula,
Yes, the majority of those pics are from places in Baja...a few are from Oaxaca and Troncones (just north of Zihuatanejo).

Anyone can check out those and others in my Smugmug site:

http://motoged.smugmug.com

Paula - 11-14-2011 at 08:12 AM

I was surprised that I could pinpoint the locations of so many of the pictures-- places in Baja, and yes-- Oaxaca.

Hmmm... I think I saw the breakfast patio at Las Golondrinas in your website Oaxaca pix?

[Edited on 11-14-2011 by Paula]

DENNIS - 11-14-2011 at 08:26 AM

Good eye, Paula. Keep 'm honest.

DENNIS - 11-14-2011 at 08:31 AM

Ged......Gotta add.....your shots are color saturated in a Kodachrome way. [I know....chromes are slides] Are they digitalized film or did you work on them with PS?
I noticed you mentioned not having time as yet to do your slides.

Beige

C-Urchin - 11-14-2011 at 09:39 AM

All these beautiful pictures are the simple proof that Mexico cannot be experienced in Black and White...or Beige.;D

Paula.
Las Golandrinas is where I stay in Oaxaca...YOU have a good eye....but I don't think that any of the pics in this thread are from there....but I do have one of from Las Golondrinas in my bathroom ....a geranium on a window sill !!!! And, as you refer to my Smugmug site....again, your eyes and memory are working well....
Thanks for taking the time to sit and look...

Las Golandrinas....great place with a great owner (last time there was about 6 years ago)....first found it in 1986)

Dennis,
All those pics are from a Canon or Panasonic point-and-shoot....all film shots are still in slide format and have not started to digitize them....a "retirement" project perhaps.....I have 5 trays of slides selected from 3000 slides I took on a 3-month trip to Mexico and Central America 20 years ago....have shown them at local "cultural" events with encouraging feedback :)

Glad to contribute to the visual appreciation of the world beyond beige....although some earth-tone shots are worthy as well....

Paula - 11-14-2011 at 10:57 AM

Ged, the 5th picture on page 2 of your Oaxaca album sure looks like Las Golondrinas to me. The table coverings have changed but it sure looks like the little breakfast place on the upper patio.

We stayed there last winter and the winter before. I love that hotel!

motoged - 11-14-2011 at 11:04 AM

Paula,
The pics in Smugmug change "pages' as the selection is random....but ....YES, Las Golandrinas is represented in the Oaxaca section of my Smugmug site....

What a wonderful city and state ! Some pics of Mazunte and Huatulco in the Oaxaca section, as well as a loop-trip from Oaxaca east over the mountains and down through the isthmus and back up to Oaxaca city.

Paula - 11-14-2011 at 02:18 PM

We went to the isthmus last year.

WIIIIIILLLLLLLLD ride from the city in a colectivo van, flasher (is it ok to say that?) by the train tracks in Tehuantepec, iguanas above, below and beside me in the Juchitan zocalo! Terrifying, but we lived to tell about it!

I can't wait to go there again!

motoged - 11-14-2011 at 04:04 PM

Si....yo tambien !
