I hate gill nets....

dtbushpilot - 11-30-2011 at 02:16 PM

During my morning fishing adventure today I came across a sad site, half a dozen manta rays tangled up in a gill net.......what a waste..

sancho - 11-30-2011 at 02:47 PM

They will net the smallest cove over and over taking
any creature that is unlucky to entangle themselves,
a few yrs. back, there was a film called ' Indescriminate
Kill', high seas drift nets, bring a person to tears...
But a Baja pangero who makes his living fishing
is forced to do what he can

mcfez - 11-30-2011 at 03:57 PM

Worst...idiots will live these nets from the shore ..outward. Last year the authorities hit our camp with a warning to one of our residents. There hasnt been a net since.

mtgoat666 - 11-30-2011 at 04:43 PM

the world's oceans have changed dramatically since man started large-scale fishing. the process started many hundreds of years ago. even in the 1700s, long before we had billions of people and diesel motors and long before the industrial revolution, the worldwide fish stocks were changing. for a good laymans picture of the change that started back before the dawn of time read "Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World."

if you care about overfishing and bad fishing (e.g. drift nets, long lines, shark finning, shrimp trawling decimation of turtles, etc),... you should also care about anthropegenic climate change. mans global warming emissions will do as much harm as bad fishing and overfishing.

the oceans are dumping grounds for urban runoff, pipe discharges, litter. the ocean temps are rising due to man's CO2 emissions. the fishies managing to survive are polluted, and being hunted to brink extinction by rapacious factory fishing methods bent on making a profit this year and next year be damned.

some day a big asteroid will wipe us all from the face of the earth and another species will evolve to take our once-dominant position in terra forming at the top of food chain. i hope that new species listens to their scientists more than this species! perhaps they will look at our fossil record and learn from our mistakes, eh?

ElCazadorAZ - 11-30-2011 at 04:51 PM

THAT totally sucks. Bad way to start your day, and a HORRIBLE way to end theirs.... Here's a video that you've all probably seen. After I watched it, I immediately sent them 50 bucks to equip their panga with better knives. H.

goat, perhaps it would be better if we all left the earth before we ruin it but if the asteroid is coming I guess we don't have anything to worry about. This post was about a gill net, if you want to go off on a political rant start your own thread......dt

Or take it Off Topic.

Many get their panties in a bunch when DK gets political, yet where are YOUR "voices" when goat goes off?

Trying to get into the holiday spirit. I went to have breakfast this morning in OB and took the shot. I figured you would notice it!!!

Floatflyer - 11-30-2011 at 06:18 PM

Would be nice to see this type of waste publicized and the culprits identified. I once took a picture of a netter by the Lighthouse and the guy said "I know where you live", blah, blah. A very troubling and sad state. Don't know if it is worth the hassle or if it would do any good anyway. Grrrrrrrrrrr:fire:

Please............"mans global warming emissions" is about the most politicized notion of the last decade. All but the most radical have crawled under a rock on the topic, even Gore is hard to find these days.

The topic was gill nets not global warming, mans global warming emissions, climate change, or whatever the du jour is currently.

Skipjack Joe - 11-30-2011 at 06:28 PM

Goat's post was neither a rant nor political.

tripledigitken - 11-30-2011 at 06:51 PM

everyone has the right to their opinion

David K - 11-30-2011 at 06:57 PM

'Man caused global warming' (or 'climate change' as they renamed it since the world is not warming) is the biggest lie that is costing billions just to fatten up the governments of the world, and out of work politicians like algore.

What part of it wasn't? I think I saw a mention of netting in there somewhere though. Sorry I made a comment but...
Netting in this area is excepted practice and probably legal. And the inshore fishing here really sucks now!

Dt,
Was that here on the East Cape? What a shame but things do go sideways sometimes.:(

Paula - 11-30-2011 at 07:58 PM

The goat is right. Overfishing has decimated fish populations world wide.

And gill netting, drift netting, and long lining are the last desperate attempts to get whatever is left out there-- just another means of ovefishing.

Same goes for you DK, if you want to rant about the existence or not of global warming start a topic about it, this thread is about a gill net.......dt

I agree with your entire statement

Pompano - 12-1-2011 at 11:15 AM

Just saying...

Netting in Dec, 2009 Bay of Conception and entrance. 10,000 kilos a day average for a week. 70,000 kilos. Sierra Mackerel.

.
.
A different type of sierra harvesting.

My best sierra dog alerted me to the sierra school in front of the casa.

School is now in session.

Like a gazelle, a Fisherman springs into action....without a net, though.

Shore casting/angling from shore..Coyote Casa. 2.1 kilos. Sierra mack for ceviche or grilled to perfection.

The other by-product fish are incidental cabrilla and... 2 walleyes?

I don't try to make a living by commercial fishing.... anymore.

Cypress - 12-1-2011 at 02:51 PM

The inshore fishing will continue to decline as long as the gill netters are allowed to operate. It has already reached the tipping point. There's zero chance of a rebound if the gill netters continue 24/7 12 months every year. Herding reef fish with hooka divers has decimated the reefs. It just goes on and on.....

Goat's post was a heck of a lot more Baja oriented and way less political than this quote. Why aren't you ever in off-topic David? Are you too good for it? :smug:

Ghost nets suck!!!

Cypress - 12-2-2011 at 03:11 PM

Anthropogenic global warming was a totally political "boogie man". Has been shot down by facts. Gill nets? Who linked gill nets to global warming?:D Not much fun shooting fish in a barrel.

sancho - 12-2-2011 at 04:59 PM

Interesting to me is how often, as in ALWAYS, this
Anti Science/Anti Conservation stance is voiced by
people on the Deracha side, generally people do
things with a MOTIVE, what do you people think is
the motive behind the Climate Change Theory you call
a Myth? What do these Scientists Wouldwide have to gain
taking that position? Some of you guys remind my of my older, uneducated, unread,
untravelled delusional father in law. A couple of you guys need to form a Baja Chapter of 'The Moon Landing Was Staged Club' [Edited on 12-3-2011 by sancho]

There's always a fresh crop of gullible folks who fall for every flim-flam scam that comes down the pike. Anthropogenic global warming is just the flavor of the week. Science? How 'bout, fabricated stats etc... You must not be keeping track of the global warming shell game.

Yup...been taking these type of photos in Conception Bay for almost 40 years. Got quite a collection going.

Hey....! Is it just me...or is it getting hot in here??

redhilltown - 12-3-2011 at 01:01 AM

They do suck. But they don't suck in a vacuum. The only two possibilities for them ending is if the locals can find another way to make money or the buyers/market for the product dry up. The Mexican government cannot stop armed drug thugs from killing at random so enforcement of throwing some nets in the water is never going to be the solution. Which is a shame as the Sea of Cortez I believe is the only sea in the world controlled by one nation only...they can shut anything down they want. What blows me away is how little these guys really get for their catch...it is just a few middle men and the buyers making all the dough. And Sierra! Of just about all fish they travel and "age" poorly. Unless you are flying daily flights out of these areas there is no such thing as a "fresh" Sierra wherever they may be headed to market.

I wish I had a magic wand and I hate to be negative but I would love to hear some thoughts on how any of this could change.

Population control? :-)

I was reading the other day about turkeys being bought for Thanksgiving day. 47 MILLION were sold in the United States for this special day. 47 MILLION! One day!

My point is about the numbers here. Just sit back for a minute and imagine the food resources for 7 BILLION per day! Stuff like gill nets and such.....will exist unfortunately.

It's all in the numbers, population control.

Side note here: I thought Goats post was a very good input. Was facts...not political. Good post Goat.

Cypress - 12-3-2011 at 02:49 PM

No. It's a lack of leadership in a difficult situation. When a resource is being over-exploited the people intrusted with their management have to make some hard choices. Not being done. What are they paying 'em for? Corruption on a grand scale? Have found much better fishing in other places, but still PO'ed about the ongoing destruction of the Sea of Cortez fishery.

Yes, but I can't tell the stories because by definition the they are "Political".

It is a shame the Manta Rays washed up in a ghost net. We could have real discussion and work on solutions, but that would be "political", eh?

last march, after the tsunami. the boys set this net for 3 days straight. total catch = 2 corBina..... :barf:

Islandbuilder - 12-4-2011 at 12:33 AM

I have fished for salmon using gillnets. When used properly, they are species specific, and even size specific. Gillnetting produces more protein with less fuel consumed than any other fishery. That's about the end of the good news. Like anything, they can be abused with disasterous results. Leaving a gillnet in the water for more than a few hours is pointless, the fish caught will be spoiled and rotting before they even get into the boat. The very small mesh mono nets used in Baja catch everything. Using them all the time will certainly destroy a small ecosystem of resident fish, but using them on schooled transient fish is probably sustainable, provided there is some scientific oversight, which I doubt is the case in the SOC.
I guess my goal in this post is to suggest that Gillnets aren't bad in every case, and that their use may be appropriate in some fisheries some of the time.

Russ - 12-4-2011 at 01:10 AM

I don't even want to get into how Some NW tribes gill net the rivers.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/15991999

Mulegena - 12-4-2011 at 05:43 AM

from the article: "As shallow fish populations have become over-exploited, the fishing industry moves further away from the coasts and deeper into the ocean every day, using nets at 2,000m depth and trawling the seabed for fish."

Now, to bring this back to gill nets and Baja, thank you DT for initiating this thread, and thanks Pompano for the supplemental photos of netting within the Bay of Conception.

Some twenty years ago Roy Malhoff (sp?) founder of Eco Mundo informed his guests about the travesty of gill netting. In the quest for shrimp smaller delicate nets are used which unfortunately traps and catches anything else. Like DTs photos shows, other sea creatures are drowned and discarded.

Roy assured us that netting was completely illegal within the Bay. However, the very next day I took a walk out to the tip of the peninsula that rises from the sandspit at Requeson only to find a gill net strung out in the water just on the other side.

If it was illegal then because of the known decimation it was causing, what now, so many years on? What of the future?
