I hate gill nets....

During my morning fishing adventure today I came across a sad site, half a dozen manta rays tangled up in a gill net.......what a waste..

They will net the smallest cove over and over taking
any creature that is unlucky to entangle themselves,
a few yrs. back, there was a film called ' Indescriminate
Kill', high seas drift nets, bring a person to tears...
But a Baja pangero who makes his living fishing
is forced to do what he can

Worst...idiots will live these nets from the shore ..outward. Last year the authorities hit our camp with a warning to one of our residents. There hasnt been a net since.

the world's oceans have changed dramatically since man started large-scale fishing. the process started many hundreds of years ago. even in the 1700s, long before we had billions of people and diesel motors and long before the industrial revolution, the worldwide fish stocks were changing. for a good laymans picture of the change that started back before the dawn of time read "Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World."

if you care about overfishing and bad fishing (e.g. drift nets, long lines, shark finning, shrimp trawling decimation of turtles, etc),... you should also care about anthropegenic climate change. mans global warming emissions will do as much harm as bad fishing and overfishing.

the oceans are dumping grounds for urban runoff, pipe discharges, litter. the ocean temps are rising due to man's CO2 emissions. the fishies managing to survive are polluted, and being hunted to brink extinction by rapacious factory fishing methods bent on making a profit this year and next year be damned.

some day a big asteroid will wipe us all from the face of the earth and another species will evolve to take our once-dominant position in terra forming at the top of food chain. i hope that new species listens to their scientists more than this species! perhaps they will look at our fossil record and learn from our mistakes, eh?

THAT totally sucks. Bad way to start your day, and a HORRIBLE way to end theirs.... Here's a video that you've all probably seen. After I watched it, I immediately sent them 50 bucks to equip their panga with better knives. H.

goat, perhaps it would be better if we all left the earth before we ruin it but if the asteroid is coming I guess we don't have anything to worry about. This post was about a gill net, if you want to go off on a political rant start your own thread......dt

Would be nice to see this type of waste publicized and the culprits identified. I once took a picture of a netter by the Lighthouse and the guy said "I know where you live", blah, blah. A very troubling and sad state. Don't know if it is worth the hassle or if it would do any good anyway. Grrrrrrrrrrr:fire:

Please............"mans global warming emissions" is about the most politicized notion of the last decade. All but the most radical have crawled under a rock on the topic, even Gore is hard to find these days.

The topic was gill nets not global warming, mans global warming emissions, climate change, or whatever the du jour is currently.

'Man caused global warming' (or 'climate change' as they renamed it since the world is not warming) is the biggest lie that is costing billions just to fatten up the governments of the world, and out of work politicians like algore.

What part of it wasn't? I think I saw a mention of netting in there somewhere though. Sorry I made a comment but...
Netting in this area is excepted practice and probably legal. And the inshore fishing here really sucks now!

The goat is right. Overfishing has decimated fish populations world wide.

And gill netting, drift netting, and long lining are the last desperate attempts to get whatever is left out there-- just another means of ovefishing.
