The very latest update on Juanita 6/16/12

 Pages:  1

Sallysouth - 12-21-2011 at 07:06 PM

Hola Nomads.I have some not so good news.Juanita has an infection that has taken over her eyes and sinuses. She has been in "remission" for a month now so this was not expected. She is at UCI in Orange. If it turns to be Staph, the outlook is not good. She is not producing white blood cells.they are going to try a radical treatment on her with white cells only from her donors(platlets). She won't be with us on Christmas and it will be soo hard for us and especially her darling little girls. Please say prayers for her and her family at this most important time of the year.I am trying to hold it together as are her Sister and her Dad, but I am very scared.Pray for her please, or ask your higher power to take charge!! Sally:(

Sally, I'm new here, and don't know your story, and I can't possibly know the strain you're living through now. My prayer for you is that you, and your family, may know peace, and comfort as you walk through this impossibly difficult time.

Breath. Rest when you can. Let others help you whenever possible.

Seems everybody above here has done a great job of putting into words what everybody in "nomad land " would like to say. So Just know that we all have your entire family in our thoughts and prayers, Sally.......Please call me if there's anything can do to help........ Dick..

Pompano - 12-22-2011 at 10:48 AM

Keep your spirits up, Sally...as best you can. Remember, Nomads are all here for you and Juanita. We send our love and invite to Coyote Bay. Leaning on a shoulder is allowed...and welcomed.

Islandbuilder - 12-22-2011 at 05:39 PM

Sally, thank you for the u2u, I have read through the various threads about your daughter's illness, and all that you have been through this year.
My goodness, my heart breaks for you, and I can only guess how exhausted your spirit must be, with so many burdens and so much powerlessness to make things different or better.
It certainly sounds like you've been a lioness on your daughter's behalf, and have accomplished miracles in getting her into the hospital, taking care of her children and dealing with the myriad complexities of our medical system. You have done, and are doing, an amazing job!! You are a great blessing to your family, and indirectly, to all of us who follow along.
It is difficult, when we are forced to let go of our illusions of control over our lives, and admit that we really can't do much about the "Big" problems. But even as it's difficult it is also easy, because when we admit we're powerless over stuff, whether it's cancer or an addiction, we have to lay down our false sense of responsibility to fix the problem as well.
You are doing all that can be done. The rest is up to, please forgive me if this is offensive, I don't mean it to be, God.
Thus prayer is effective, and reasonable.
It sounds like you have the prayers of hundreds directed on your daughters behalf, to those hundreds please add those of my wife and I.
Blessings to you and your family. I ask that this illness be banished from your daughter, and that she be freed to return to her familiy and life.

Bill

Sallysouth - 12-23-2011 at 10:31 AM

Wow, thanks Nena, I know you will...Russ, I'll tell her you said to get better!Dick, thanks so much! Not sure what you can do to help out but it sure is awesome knowing you are there if needed! Roger, I am trying to but had a meltdown yesterday.Whata lousy time of year for this!I know Nomads are here for us, thats why I post!! You all ease my pain and fears some.Bill, those are some powerful words! We have never met but you sound like a mighty fine human being.I would be proud to be your friend!!Thank you ALL!! Now for todays update,She got her first dose of white cells transfused last nite and is doing a little better today!!That is the BEST news!!They want to give her a weeks dose but with the holiday it won't be possible. The white cells last for only 24 hrs,They did an emergency delivery from Pomona last nite for her.She will be in the hospital for quite some time this round.I will update daily.Going to spend time with her tomorrow and take presents.Keep the prayers coming folks!!! Sally

Islandbuilder - 12-23-2011 at 11:20 AM

Thank you for the update Sally, I was thinking about you and Juanita this morning. Your meltdown is understandable, and you should both expect and accept this natural stress response.
I think that it is encouraging that the Drs. have a treatment plan, and that they are starting. Amazing new treatments not available a very short time ago!
Do you have someone with you who you can cry with? Or do you have to be "the strong one" in front of everyone? Obviously you can't come apart in front of your grandchildren, or your daughter, but you do need to let it all go, ideally with someone's arms around you. A number of Nomads have posted that they are nearby, and have offered to help however possible. I strongly suggest that you contact some of them, to be your on-site support network. They don't have to make everything all right, they don't have to pay the bills, they just need to be there when you need to cry. Or to make you laugh! It's OK to laugh when in the midst of stuff like this, just like it's OK to cry.
Blessings today. You and your family are in many prayers and thoughts.

BajaBlanca - 12-23-2011 at 12:58 PM

prayer sent out. as someone said, meltdowns are allowed and surely to be expected. be sure to take extra good care of yourself since you, above all, need tobe healthy both in spirit and body.

breathe deeply often.
maybe schedule a massage per week
keep writing on bajanomads !!! it is great to get feelings out there - it also heals.
if you can swing it - take some catnaps during the day. such a simple way to recharge overloaded bodies ...

lots of prayers are headed your way !!!

Sallysouth - 12-23-2011 at 08:13 PM

Hi gang.I do have my mate, just got married after being together for 15 yrs.! He is a very kind soul and loves me and my family. He was with me at meltdown and hugged me just right. Then last nite I found Larry the Cable Guys' Christmas specials to watch and got some real good laughter going on!Felt so good...And today I finished my shopping for Juanita for her girls for Christmas. She didn't get a chance to do it.She wants to make a "fairy garden" for the girls in my Dads back yard.I think it will turn out really cool. They will need to wait for Mom to come home to start it tho...Blanca, I have not had a massage in 20+ years.I think it would be a good time for that.I did take a catnap today in my chair, with my cat.Much needed but still tired. To bed early so I can be sharp and alert for Juanita tomorrow morning with her goodies!Thank you for the prayers.....and good ideas! Hugs to all, Sally

David K - 12-24-2011 at 11:07 AM

Sounds great Sally... congratulations and Merry Christmas!

fishingmako - 12-24-2011 at 11:41 AM

Sally, I know Prayer works and it works well.

Father I ask that you send the Holy Spirit to be with Sally and her Family, and at this time to be with Juanita, only you Father are the Surgeon..Doctor and can do all that is needed, so we ask that the ministering Angels Gather and do a mighty healing on this beloved person, and we ask this in your Sons Name.

Sallysouth - 12-24-2011 at 04:20 PM

AMEN!! Thank you Mako! My daughter,Amy and I just got home from the hospital.I was NOT prepared for what I saw when I walked in.She looked like she was just in a raging fight! One eye swollen shut, black and blue, whole side of her face all puffed out, and now the other eye is just barely open. While we were there three doctors came in.The first one told her he had some good news, that she is now producing her OWN white blood cells! They didn't expect this so soon!It is a major turn around. He explained that her face is swollen because she now has cells that are fighting off the infection that was there before and it is actually a good sign! The last doctor told her she could go home but she said no, she didn't want to chance getting another infection from someone (big family)and re-gress.We don't particularly care for this doctor and decided he didn't have all the facts(which,it turns out he didn't).So Nomads, a Christmas miracle for us and yes, all those prayers helped!!!!Merry Christmas Nomads!!!She is healing! Sally

Islandbuilder - 12-24-2011 at 10:19 PM

That is wonderful news! Sounds like Juanita made a wise choice to stay in the hospital. It is indeed a wonderful blessing, I hope that she is able to rejoin her family, and her interupted life, very soon.

Eli - 12-25-2011 at 07:43 AM

Great to read about the the postive swing in Juanitas progress, may she continue to heal and soon be home with those who Love and miss her.

fishingmako - 12-26-2011 at 12:35 PM

Thank you Lord for your miraculous healing, only you can do such things, I have seen them over and over.

You are in the business of healing same today as yesterday, nothing changes only the sick get better with prayer!

So I pray for this Family to have a full recovery very soon!

DavidE - 12-26-2011 at 03:49 PM

The BEST Christmas Gift Of All!

Sallysouth - 12-26-2011 at 05:12 PM

Today Mijas white cell count is at 15,000, a normal count!!She went in with 0!! They will keep her until tomorrow at least and check on the infection in her eyes and face, then I think she will be coming home!!She is a little better today and her right eye, the one that has been totally swollen shut for days is opened a bit.Her body is fighting the beast and she is winning!! If I ever doubted that there was a higher power, I now have proof that there is....and the power of love and kindness.Thank you Nomads for pumping up the caring quota!! More tomorrow, Sally

CaboMagic - 12-26-2011 at 06:06 PM

Sallysouth - 1-26-2012 at 11:40 PM

Hi all. Today Juanita went back into the hospital for a months stay. Her cancer has come back. They are on an urgent search for a bone marrow donor for her.Her sisters are not a match. So they start all over with radical chemo, this time using even heavier meds mostly used for juveniles. She is "putting her house in order" just in case .Now is the time for the heavy guns to come out with prayers and positive energy for her.You guys have it!I will update when I can.Gonna have my hands full with the G-Girls and Dad. Abrazos, Sally

David K - 1-26-2012 at 11:44 PM

We will keep praying for her! Keep your hopes up!

Sallysouth - 1-26-2012 at 11:55 PM

Thanks David! The second time is much harder than the first, results are not so good.Gotta keep the faith.

Islandbuilder - 1-27-2012 at 12:45 AM

I know that these reoccurances are very difficult to deal with. It is physically and emotionally exhausting. I hope and pray that you and Juanita be uplifted and held closely.
Finding marrow donators is helped by getting the word out to as many people as possible.
If you can post the blood type and other essential markers that Juanita needs, perhaps someone here is able to help?
I imagine that you and your family are shocked and tired. It's difficult to make thoughtfull decisions when you getting hit as often and as hard as you guys are.
Praying also that you might have wisdom and a sense of calmness around you, so that you can think clearly and evaluate your options.

Skipjack Joe - 1-27-2012 at 04:01 AM

A friend of ours used facebook (in addition to others) as a way of finding additional bone marrow donors. Most users have over 100 friends and each friend has 100 friends so the word on the drive got out very quickly.

I'm hoping for the best for your daughter.

sd - 1-27-2012 at 07:06 AM

Cancer is such a nasty disease. I am sorry to hear it continues to be an issue for Juanita.

Thank you so much guys.Yesterday they found a donor and when the last of the platelets were pumped into her she said she felt like her old self. There has ben so much damage done to her body and brain. Her little sis Amy will be seeing her tomorrow and then I will know more about her condition.I am taking care of G-girls so they can have their time together.Another note (to me)ask what her donor type/needs are, thanks to S.Joe. Abrazos and more, Sally

Paulina - 1-28-2012 at 11:29 PM

Be The Match Foundation. It's very easy to register, it just takes a bit of spit, which flies abundantly on this board. To be able to give the gift of life to someone is amazing, and if you are chosen there is no cost what so ever to the donor. I've been registered for two years now. Check it out...

http://marrow.org/Registry_Members/Donation/Steps_of_Donatio...

Sally, all of our prayers are with Juanita, her girls, you and your family. I want to read more good news!

Sallysouth - 1-29-2012 at 10:29 PM

Thanks Paulina! I found out that is what they are using to find donors for Juanita!Great foundation. No news on her today, too many people in the room for her sis to talk to her.I'll update when I can get a report.

Sallysouth - 1-31-2012 at 11:20 PM

She is doing well today! They have her on a tiny patch to manage her pain. The dilatid was making her so dopey and fuzzy! Her body is taking the chemo well and she was actually a bit feisty on the phone today! The foundation that Paulina spoke of, has found several potential matches for her, which is so important.I will be seeing her soon, after I take care of my doctor stuff and can get up there.Update then. Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts!

measomsan - 2-1-2012 at 02:20 PM

Sally Allan and Carol from Houston are praying for her

Sallysouth - 2-17-2012 at 08:19 PM

Todays report, After some major screw ups with a bone marrow test that produced none, the second one was sucessful and the results are that she is , once again, in remission! No cancer cells found and she is waiting for the donor to be found and brought to her.It is a person to person transfer.Sitting(or laying) next to each other while the marrow is transferred. That person has to be in the best of health, no bugs or problems.Geez, are there really people out there like that? What an ordeal my girl has been going thru.I will be seeing her tomorrow and will report later. Thanks for the prayers and positive thoughts!! Sally

Islandbuilder - 2-17-2012 at 10:34 PM

Sally, I fall far short of understanding the medical ramifications of Juanita's disease, but I know enough to understand that a no cancer report is good news. As I understand this sort of treatment, at this point, her bone marrow needs to be re-seeded with donor marrow so she can again make her own blood cells, right? Until she gets the bone marrow transplant she is very vulnerable to infection, yes?

In any case, I'm very glad that the treatment has gone this well thus far, and pray that a donor is found quickly, and that the transplanted marrow "takes" and begins making new blood cells. I certainly hope and pray that this ordeal is in it's closing chapters, and that Juanita can get back to being a mom and daughter!

Sallysouth - 2-20-2012 at 06:29 PM

Anew day here.I went with my daughter Amy and her girls to visit Juanita. She is doing well and is, as I said, in re-mission.They are giving her steriods and she looks kinda like a sumo wrestler(face only) but her eyes are clear as is her mind and speech. She may be getting out this Friday, coming home until they find a donor. They have two possible donors. Then she has her marrow transplant, six weeks of quarantine. If all goes well, she is done and can resume her life!! Thank you all again for your positive energy!!I will post at the end of this week.Abrazos, Sally

The fight continues. She has an infection, of the UTI, a fever, and is not producing her white cells. She is almost in a coma, can not stay awake, and in a lot of pain. Her Sister went to see her today and was told that of the four possible donor matches for her(bone marrow) in the US, not one has replied to letters or calls made from the doctors or staff at UCI.So next they try to contact donors from Europe. At this point, it is looking very grim.We keep on hoping and trying to be possitive.Anyone on this board get tested? If so, Bless you, and thank you.I'll let yolu know if there is any GOOD news...Abrazos Nomads, you are the BEST! Sally. An after thought, can someone post a pic of her on the cover of WON that was a few years back?(um, DK?) so that all can see the vibrant person she is? Just a thought...;)

Paulina - 3-1-2012 at 10:02 PM

Sally, I'm so sorry. That is so sad that the potential donors are flaking. It is a big commitment to sign up, one that should be seriously considered before hand so this kind of situation doesn't happen.

Sending tons of positive energy your direction.

P>*)))>{

Sallysouth - 3-1-2012 at 10:09 PM

Thanks Paulina.I know you are full of tons of that good stuff along with Nena, Diana, DENNIS, Skipjack, IslandB, and many more.Yes it is a BIG commitment to sign up for this. And one has to be in tip top health to boot.Thats a tough one in our world today.

Islandbuilder - 3-1-2012 at 10:13 PM

Sally, so sorry that the struggle is continuing to be so damn hard! You and your family remain in my thoughts and prayers. No one ever say that Juanita gave up, or that her mom didn't support her in every possible way. You are both heros. I hope you can get something other than cried out, exhausted and collapsed sleep.

Blessings to you both.

Testing to be a bone marrow donor candidate

Mulegena - 3-1-2012 at 10:43 PM

I could research this myself on-line, but I figure the Board has the answer.

How do we go about getting tested?
What's involved?
What are we looking at committment-wise?

Amigos and Amigas - altho our business is all about Sportfishing, FOR US, it's all about being alive, being thankful, and paying it forward whenever possible.

Some of you may know or remember Juanita and Ty Miller - They used to own Juanitas Sportfishing many many many years ago. Beautiful Juanita has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Her mom, Sally lives in San Juan Capistrano, California and is taking care of Ty & Juanitas two young girls ..

Juanita is at Scripps Center in Irvine, CA ...

Anyone can be being tested as a possible donor-- for this young woman or someone else.

Here's the link to the bone marrow registry. http://marrow.org

This photo from the benefit in October which allowed them to get this far.

Sad to say, Sally, I am too old and broken to donate for Juanita.

I do pray for a donor to be found soon. Yes, it is a huge commitment. But what greater gift might we have than to give life to another, especially a young mother.

A quick update. She has a lung infection, not pneumonia as of now, and is in the ICU.Please accept my appologies for ranting here.I know how much so many people care about her and this is kinda like my "pillow place" to go before I check out for the nite. From here on out, I have become very aware that I must be careful of what I share here.I will share only positive and first hand info .I have some awesome pics of Juanita out of WON that I have put into my scanner but thats about as far as I can get .Going to see her tommorow, will give a light update in the PM

Sally,
After spending all of 2010 with my wife with a similar leukemia (she is now well) often in neutrapenic state as I believe Juanita is at this time, I would like to offer some words of encouragement to you Sally. We had episodes when it felt like there was no hope at all. But little by little each difficult hurdle was jumped. Time and again, we were distraught, but modern medicine kept her going. Here we are now with my Anne most "likely cured for life", according to her UCLA docs. We hope for the same for Juanita. In 2010 we witnessed many leukemia patients do well and we are still friends with several.

We feel your pain as we were there, you are in our thoughts and we hope one day you and Juanita can look back at this experience years from now.

In Anne's case she has 8 siblings, one was a match but Anne ended up not needing a transplant. There is a 1 in 4 chance that any one given sibling is a match.

To anyone on the fence about being tested for bone marrow compatibility, should you be a match there is no longer any pain in donating marrow. It is simply slowing giving blood while you watch a movie. There is no more bone marrow "harvesting". There is nothing to fear as there was in years past.

All the best to you Juanita. You'll get through this, I trust this will be so.

Thank you so much for that.I spent some hours with her today and it was pretty tough.I so wish that her recovery will happen. My sweet, strong loving, giving girl is a fighter. Her white cell counts have started to go up a bit, which raises the hope she may be beating the beast. We have to keep the faith. And yes she is the neutrapenic state now.She has a mass in her lungs and now they will be doing a biopsy, trach-something on her tommow to see what it is.The marrow donor is being aggresivly searched.I will know more tommorow.Gene, may I ask how old Anne is?So glad for you both she is doing well and home.

Ah Sally, I wish I had the magical words to bring you some kind of respite from all the pain of this last year. Please know Juanita continues in my prayers for better tomorrow.

Sally, Anne was 55 at the time, your young Juanita has an even better chance. It sounds as if Juanita had gone into septic shock. Been there, too. The doctors have to use such a variety of antibiotics to get a handle on infections. Her white count will come up, the neutranpenia vanish and amazingly Juanita's immune system once it kicks in will sweep the infection from her body within 24 hours. 3 days from now she could be fully recovered from this infection. It is fantastic when you see how much better Juanita's immune system works than a whole hospital full of doctors and antibiotics.

Septic shock, which she likely went into, is exceedingly dangerous but if you are seeing the slightest rise in her white counts at this time, well then, I assure, she will be fine.

You mention Juanita is in remission. So, she has gone through one month of induction and how many consolidations? For most AML, the is induction and then as long as she can stand it, three one month hospital stays of consolidations.

If you need to talk, email me at misterkofa@hotmail.com, I can give you my phone number. It helps to speak with someone who has been there before.

Hi Gene.Juanita is 43 yrs. old Her symptoms started some years ago, maybe 3 or4.She has been here in the states since I picked her up in San Diego this last June. She could not walk, had pneumonia and was nearly dead. She has been in and out of the cancer center since then, battleing the beast. This last hospital stay has been40 days. She is not in remission , but was before this one.As of today her white count is up to 2.0 She has a lung mass, which I hope to find out tommorow what it is and if it can be dealt with.I think I just might need to call you tomorrow.Sounds like you know what this does to us...thanks Gene, Sally

generubin - 3-6-2012 at 11:31 PM

Sally,

Anne had a similar mass, vanished when white count hit 3.White count at 2.0 means she'll likely be at 2.5, maybe 3 tomorrow. Good news. Our experience with the same scenarios were that when Anne would hit 3.0, all infections would vanish. We went through 4, 3 week periods of neutrapenia. I don't think most people comprehend how dangerous this time is, life hangs by a thread.

I was at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and UCLA 24/7 for many months. Made friends with other patients, many/most made it through what was difficult and are now well. I hope to be of some help and offer optimism to you.

I got your email, I'll call you while you are on your walk tomorrow.

Gene

Sallysouth - 3-12-2012 at 03:58 PM

She is back in the hospital. She had 1 1/2 days out , filled with pain from Diverticultis.I know first hand how painful this can be as I suffered with it for years. My insurance would not cover surgery unless it was life threatening, so instead, I would go to the ER and get IVed antibiotics for 6-8 hrs and sent home. The last bout was the worst and I ended up with abcessed diverticuli, which burst ,and into emergency surgery.I was in the hospital for a month, sent home with a bag(on my stomach) and liquid TPC( In a backpack, battery powered, pic line)home to heal without eating for two months. It was pure hell. I so hope that Juanitas case can be corrected right away.Iwill post an update tomorrow. Thanks Nomads, for your continued, and much appreciated support!! Sally

DianaT - 3-12-2012 at 04:06 PM

She's getting out again tomorrow!Man those doctors and nurses really know their stuff! Diverticulitis under control and being given hemaglobin.Hopefully in the next year or so she will be going back to Baja, where her heart is at home.
