Halfway House has always been a good time. My family ate there a lot when I was growing up because it was 1K from our 'casa en la playa'. For me it
started in early 60's my folks much earlier. I had my first margarita there from Pedro, he knew my parents and their friends, at 16 and many more
after. We used to make sure we were all there for the annual 'grande fiesta de
bailar' when all the caballeros would show up out of the hills with their sweethearts everyone in their finest big skirts and bigger belt buckles and
sombreros the dance floor would be filled as a five piece banda played on. For many years thru the 70’s the annual international hang gliding
championships were held there and the gliders would take off on the mesa to the east and try and hit the bull’s-eye carved in the sand. It was always
a big party on Saturday night in the bar during and after the awards ceremony. Many times over the years someone from our campo would be celebrating a
birthday or such and we would fill the place up ourselves and party til dawn then walk home if required. I recall warm summer nights in the 80’s on
the patio waiting 2+ hours on a holiday weekend for your food order to show up but the sunset, the fresh salsa chips and guac, the c-cktails and the
company made it seem like nothing. For a few summers there was a house band that had a guitar player who idolized Carlos Santana and he was good as I
recall. The first time we met Chef Johnny we asked if we could eat at the bar so
we could watch the Chavez - De La Joya fight. No problema and Johnny had no real menu as yet so he asked what we wanted and we said what you got and
he said what you want and we showed the bottle of red we brought and he ended up surprising us with a trio of filet medallions each with a different
sauce, one each queso azul, crema de chipotle and aguacate. It was served with some garlic mashed and sauté spinach and a nice salad of fresh descanso
greens with hothouse tomatoes and homemade dressing. I was impressed and so was my date. Lots of changes over the decades but always a good time.
