It's been years since a tall and distinguished appearing gringo got into a converation with me in the fabulous Las Tunas neighborhood of Todos.

I asked him if he spoke Spanish, and he got flustered and blurted out: NO! Why should I? These people need to start speaking English!

I thought, OK, he probably doesn't have too many Mexican friends.

By the way, the bakery in Todos has the BEST bolilo's around -- hot everyday at 2pm.

BTW, the talk louder thing is natural and common. How many times have you seed people speak louder to blind people?

But, Lencho felt insulted by the previous post, which was nothing to get insulted by, for the most part. Unless you want to.

Who can deny that Mexicans go "chopping". Who can deny that people who move abroad congregate into ghettos - I know plenty of Germans who have lived in the U.S. for 40-50 years and sound like they just got off the boat. Italians, too.

People should do better on both sides of that fence - learn more and tolerate more. It don't make no never mind at the end of the day anyway.

I live in a small town on the border that is at least 99% Mexican. A candidate for city council was recently stricken from the ballot by a judge because she was not fluent in English and AZ law requires English in council procedings.

My favorite city council meeting was a few years ago when, during "call to the public", a lady came forward to present a councilman with a carton of eggs. Because, as she put it, "he needed them".
