My Spanish is good enough I don't have to ask
'How Much is That in Real Money'?, but I do stop
at all stop signs, real or imagined, no I would not
ask some guy working in a tienda if he has
any Huevos

It's been years since a tall and distinguished appearing gringo got into a converation with me in the fabulous Las Tunas neighborhood of Todos.

I asked him if he spoke Spanish, and he got flustered and blurted out: NO! Why should I? These people need to start speaking English!

I thought, OK, he probably doesn't have too many Mexican friends.

By the way, the bakery in Todos has the BEST bolilo's around -- hot everyday at 2pm.

US Marines: providing enemies of America an opportunity to die for their country since 1775.

What I say before any important decision.
F*ck it.

You slow down behind the car with the flashing light expecting him to make a left turn. To the annoyance of the drivers behind you.

This, and Lencho's original examples, describe ignorance. All over the world, you see Americans (but not only Americans), speak louder thinking that will help people who don't speak English understand. The definition of bolillo, as I understand it, is way more insulting than that.

BTW, the talk louder thing is natural and common. How many times have you seed people speak louder to blind people?

But, Lencho felt insulted by the previous post, which was nothing to get insulted by, for the most part. Unless you want to.

Who can deny that Mexicans go "chopping". Who can deny that people who move abroad congregate into ghettos - I know plenty of Germans who have lived in the U.S. for 40-50 years and sound like they just got off the boat. Italians, too.

People should do better on both sides of that fence - learn more and tolerate more. It don't make no never mind at the end of the day anyway.

I live in a small town on the border that is at least 99% Mexican. A candidate for city council was recently stricken from the ballot by a judge because she was not fluent in English and AZ law requires English in council procedings.

My favorite city council meeting was a few years ago when, during "call to the public", a lady came forward to present a councilman with a carton of eggs. Because, as she put it, "he needed them".

All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

I did? (Goes and looks in the mirror-- "Hey, Larry-- were you insulted by the previous post?" "Nope" "But Roberto said I was." "Oh, well...").

Guess not-- for what it's worth, I'm about as white as Bimbo Bread and speak English with a media-neutral American accent-- but I did find it hysterically stereotypical and begging for equal time. :)

So maybe I was wrong. Absolutely the FIRST time that's happened .

I got the impression that you felt the need to respond to a post you found offensive because of the stereotypes. Not personally insulted, I haven't met you, but I guessed you're white..

No offense intended.

I am just the opposite. I was lost and asked a local how to get to the CFE office in spanish.

His response

"Sr, I don't speak english!"

That Rosetta stone is awesome

Saw a bit on the news about that woman, who was not
proficient in English enough to sit on the Council.
Hey Oso, I read that Yuma is the #1
sunniest places in the US, although you probably
know that from living there, seems the 1st to get to
100 in the spring and the last to get under 100 in
Oct.
