Beautiful, hot Friday in Rosarito Beach with neighbors out enjoying the view from the Disabled Beach Access point

Woooosh - 3-9-2012 at 12:47 PM

It is going to be an amazing weekend in Baja! A Santa Ana is coming through with a moderate off-shore breeze and temps into the 80's. Not much surf to speak of though maybe 3 feet. Great shape though.

These neighbors took advantage of the relatively cool morning and wheeled over and then out on the Disable Beach Access to enjoy the views. Hopefully we'll be able to get a ramp installed- but no one is complaining! Enjoy the weekend.

In a couple of years, I will need one of those ramps:smug:

Maggie would have found away to get the wheelchair over the rocks into the water if I was in it. For sure!

I don't really think you believe being disabled is funny. It is especially difficult in Mexico. Maybe in your "next lifetime" you will get to find out (check with the wifey).

do your neighbors know you are spying on them?
seems kind of creepy all that surveillance you are doing!

I don't think so at all. There are posted signs about the cameras recording ALL activities. The highest mounted camera is an IP PTZ camera the Rosarito Police is able to watch and control. Three other neighbors have the same camera set up so we all watch the area together. Between the three of us we have the area covered. It's the best way to deter crime. Isn't this pretty common on every street corner in the USA and Europe now too? Honest people don't mind the cameras and people intentionally park in front of our house because the cameras are there.

Admittedly my 540x Zoom is strong. It can read the label on your shirt from down the block. My casino background helped me set the system up. I don't really sit in front of the system much- it's programmed and automated. I do black out (mask) the windows of neighbors. The computers track and notify me of anything out of the ordinary. If not for the daily haze from the beach salt on the camera dome- it could do facial recognition too.

For these two pictures I just opened the door and used my tiny CoolPix Nikon camera- not the system. That's creepy to you too I suppose.

True. I've particulary noticed how uneven the sidewalks are. Must be very difficult for wheelchairs to navigate.

BajaBlanca - 3-9-2012 at 02:33 PM

sad scenario ... no matter how you look at it.

yup- A nice longboard on it would be fun. I do have to drop 20 pounds or wait until whaling season is over before I head out. Wouldn't want to confuse the whales migrating north that I was part of their pod! LOL

Indeed you did! Another wonderful unexpected surprise from a fellow Nomad. I'm absolutely floored, but nomads have always been so willing to help improve Meixco. I hope that spirit of the Nomad clan never goes away. Thanks Angels4! You rock!

Anyone that supports the local Baja community is a great member of the human race. This is a good idea here woosh. I do have a question although

I went to your donation website...and did not find one word about the funding to be used for the handicap. There is no access showing in your diagrams and pictures...as well. What gives? Oversight?

We have been working for four years to protect the beach from illegal developers. We have legally secured 800 square meters of beach for recreational use and we are ready to begin construction on a project for the people.

Everyone needs to get outside and exercise more. A Beach Fitness trail allows people to try one station or all nine- and at any fitness level.

It will be a good stand-alone workout, or beach running enthusiasts can add the Beach Fitness Trail it to their warm -up or cool-down routines.

Rosarito Beach Activity Trail Fund

The Beach area is protected from development in Mexico through the issuance of Federal Land Titles or Concessions. Anyone can apply for a title, but the people who live in front of the beach get "first dibs". That has not stopped squatters from delaying plans to create a beach version of the popular "Fitness Trail" concept on the concession.

100% of donations will be used for concession fees and building a 9 station Beach Fitness Trail from wood, cement, and signage.
If you're tired of seeing this old white man get beat up to protect beach access for the disabled of Mexico- donate. Thanks.

Whoosh...what a great thing to do! Kudos!

My first thought was fix the chair not the curbs. When this image popped-up (considering all your security) I had to stick it in.

There are wonderful alternatives to immobility now, with improved access, even more possibilities for those who can afford it.

Could have used one where we were renting ... was a drop of about 4' to the rocks and sand, from the last step .... tried it once ... the wife had one hell of a time getting me back up ...

All better now! The Disabled Beach Access Fund and the Beach Fitness Trail Fund are separate and I got the photos in. Thanks again for the patience:

San Diego offers the use of special Beach Wheel chairs for FREE with on-line reservations. I don't think we can ever get to that point... but wouldn't it be awesome if we could! We can dream though.

Better!
Now may I suggest a few more changes. I wish to emphasize that I am not trolling anyone here.....

I donate quite a bit to children's needs in three towns...Sacramento, San Felipe, and San Miguel, Cozumel. I do volunteer work with the Sacramento Children's Advocate...Volunteers of America...Sacramento Children's Receiving Home....more.

Having said all this was not because I want to pose as a Angel ( I certainly am not)....rather because I have been involved with handicapped projects. Your proposed project is very inadequate for children of disabilities. The playground equipment is that for kids without physical / mental issues. There cant be anything worst...than taking a disadvantaged child to a park where he/she is forced to watch the others play.

I have added a link so that you may better understood the true needs of this park.

Wow McFez, your offer to help with the design is very cool. When we get to that point I will share them with you and then post the ideas here for more nomad input. Thanks!

I'd love to see what things we can do for children. Everything has to be oceanproof, bulletproof (the materials used like cement), modular to a degree to economically replace broken parts, and incredibly strong. It also has to be anchored in cement on it won't last a day. People would rather have something more basic and sturdy that will be there, than fancy and gone the next day. Building with wood using replaceable wood beams would be a smart idea. Stuff like that.

I'll bet nomads have a zillion things they have seen that would work for both the disable beach access and the beach fitness trail. Nomads! Please take pics of cool things we can consider in the design and post them!

I was thinking the same thing! But good news. Yesterday I discovered the work on the Rosarito Malecon has begun- at our end no less. Let's give it then a few weeks and see how fast they work!

THE ROSARITO MALECON PROJECT HAS BEGUN! (PROJECTO NORTE)

On my walk I noticed construction work on the north side of the condo tower. Today they were piling small boulders on the edge near the beach (to put into metal cages as a foundation). I had been seeing activity there for few weeks but was not sure what it was. Today I noticed they had chalked out an area to extend the under-street storm drain further west towards the water. They are extending that drain so the road and the Malecon can be built over top of it. I talked with the workers at two locations. One group was building cages for the rocks- I teased them that they must be fishing for some very large lobsters with traps that size. They confirmed the cages were to hold rocks. We talked about the Malecon Project being good for jobs and tourism. They opened up after a while of us talking about how badly Rosarito needed the construction jobs and tourism. They had the plans for the Projecto Norte too (Malecon). I then went to the guys chalking the beach for the drain extension and had a longer talk with them. Same plans and we talked for while about it and the positive impact for Rosarito.

So the bottom line is that the Rosarito Malecon is coming, and fast. They are going to make the turn south where the storm drain extension is and then continue Paseo del Mar all the way south with the Rosarito Malecon on the ocean side (of course). They will break down the wall the Playa Bonita condo people put up to block the street (and I harped about in my video) and continue working south. There are several houses beside Tila's that have to go and they said it will be distasteful to them, but necessary. So I don't think her friends need to do anything to force her out any sooner and they won't have to be the bad guys who do it- it will just happen as part of the construction project. That is the most logical reason she is still there.

Tilas house is modular and she can tow it across the street next to us and have a better location. If she's smart, she will buy that lot and do it quickly and still come out ahead financially.

I sure hope so. Look good but I don't want to jinx it.

For now, I am going to return the generous PayPal donations you and others have made. If they build the Malecon (looks like it) I will no longer have to pay the concession fees, the new Disabled Beach Access will be constructed, and my goal to preserve the beach will have been accomplished. If they don't build it- we will continue with this Disabled Beach Access project and I will happily re-accept the donations at that time. In this tight economy I don't want to be holding onto people's hard earned money.
