130# Tuna caught in Loreto???

TheColoradoDude - 3-31-2012 at 01:15 PM

Howdy folks! There is a rumor going around San Carlos Sonora just across the SOC from Santa Rosalia that a 100# Tuna was caught in Loreto in 65 degree water. It is not April 1st yet and in Mexico that day is December 28th 7 days after the End of the World/Mayan Calendar.

Anybody hear about this?

Hey....waidaminit. This fish story just grew by thirty pounds.

TheColoradoDude - 3-31-2012 at 01:31 PM

Hahahaha! That is true and funny. Also the place changed. I originally put mulege then I went back to read on our local forum and it said Loreto so I changed that too. Sounds pretty fishy to me!

Here's a pic of the 130# yellowfin caught by Ron and Linda Beitelspacher last Saturday, a week ago today, South of Isla Catalana. I weighed the fish and took the photo.

Here's also a link the the report on Bloodydecks:

And, a photo Linda took of Bad Company, the only other boat fishing on the south reef that afternoon, showing off two they caught from the same school.

I was fishing about 15 miles south for yellowtail that day. A friend took this photo. The fish I'm holding weighed 44#.

It was not a bad day's fishing out of Loreto.

nice, especially seeing tuna like that!

I caught a fish just south of Loreto bigger than the one in the picture. We didn't have a scale but when I got home and developed the picture, the negative weighed 12 pounds.

Van, don't laugh. I caught another big tuna right there by Nopolo a looooong time ago. On that one I didn't have a camera or a scale. We called a grua from Loreto to hoist it up for us and the best I could do was to step off, measure the shadow: 9 feet, 7 inches.

very interesting stuff.....early last week while fishing the mulege area with a buddy we observed a really nice marlin jump around 30 times clear up at the entrance of concepcion bay....really, really early for that sort of stuff to be happening here...but i like it!......now......where are the dorado?

One day last week a marlin came up less than 100' from my boat at Isla Santa Cruz, and friends caught one near Las Animas. The SST during this calm spell has been reaching over 70 degrees outside in the afternoon. Yesterday I fished early around Santa Cruz for yellowtail and then in the heat of the day trolled about 30 (4 hours) miles on a line east of Santa Cruz / Catalana about 15 miles for marlin and/or dorado, for nada. There is much less bait and sea life outside than in. The marlin are definitely here, though, and the dorado will not be far behind, if they, too, are not already around.

Here's a pic of one of the hammerhead sharks that have taken over one of the bajos south of town. I sent this one on his way sporting one of my circle hooks in the corner of his mouth.

200 lb tuna (est.)

loretomike - 4-1-2012 at 01:26 PM

two of our guests went out wednesday with manuel torres ( of the well known torres fishing clan ) and boated a tuna estimated to weigh 200 pounds. the next day they caught one that weighed in at 95 pounds. i've seen the pictures, seen the fillets, and enjoyed some great tuna. so, yes, they are out there.

No Cypress you can't get these fish with a strip bait over a rock pile:lol: you better stick to the shellcrackers.

I think he's gonna need a bigger cane pole.

Cypress - 4-2-2012 at 04:48 AM

No more cane poles for me. Fiberglass! There's one on the market now that's about 20' long.:)
