Highway 12 - Bahia de los Angeles

BajaNomad - 4-14-2012 at 02:04 PM

Something I hadn't asked, nor looked up before our trip was the condition of the LA Bay highway.

Suffice it to say that as of this week, it's in darn good, and smooth, condition... all the way from Hwy 1 to Bahia de los Angeles.

Saw some livestock along the highway near the San Borja road junction.

Never heard it called Mexico Hwy. 12 before... It has always had Hwy. 1 signs on it... Interesting!

BajaNomad - 4-14-2012 at 08:23 PM

Didn't go back to take a picture of it, but passed a kilometer marker that looked normal, except instead of the actual #, it had a large question mark on it...

?

woody with a view - 4-14-2012 at 08:25 PM

where EXACTLY? i'll get a shot of it in 2 weeks. unless of course, it is a secret!:light:

Yeah, we saw that one too, and laughed

It is fairly close to the deep wash before the lookout,
On the right side headed East (that would make it South side of the highway)

Never saw a ?? mileage sign before

that is why i put KC's on the grill!!! we roll in the early morning lite and just 1/2 of one of these (or a full sized cow!) can ruin your life, not to mention your trip!

Lights are big in Baja, in the dark!

I have 2 HID driving beams and 2 Hella 4000 pencil beams, now convered from 100 watt halogen to 35 watt HID (5000ēK).

Like I said, just before the big arroyo, which is just before the lookout.

BajaNomad - 4-16-2012 at 02:15 AM

I think it's been repainted - as my recollection is that it was not so faded this week. ??

I agree

It was not only bright black paint
but I thought that the ? was better styled,
the one in the foto is sort of a scrawl
the one I saw looked like it had been stenciled

near San Borja turnoff?

bryanmckenzie - 4-16-2012 at 12:06 PM

I remember seeing a Km? sign almost 2 years ago. And not getting a picture. Neat the San Borja turnoff, maybe?

Just before that turnoff is where I almost met a new friend ... white albino (?) burros & skid marks. I love the skid marks and his timing to be right there when I arrived.

He didn't stick around after I stopped and got out to pet him.

Yah, that is a great photo... ghost burro the truck braked right through!

Oggie - 4-16-2012 at 02:57 PM

Another near miss. We were towing a large boat. The bull moved after we backed up.

David K - 4-16-2012 at 04:08 PM

They have always had a unique way of spelling YUBAY (sign past bull for Arroyo crossing/ big dip, ahead)

We came out fairly early in the morning. Saw the vultures first, then the coyotes then the mashed cows.

Didn't see any mashed cars though.

Love that drive going in, looking down on the bay and the islands. Magic!
Then you get to the ugliest mess on the peninsula....!

You will offend many with this post

Alas, your words are so true,
but the LABay lovers herein will never agree with the truths you express about what you encounter at the bottom of the hill.

The town really is a mess, sad to say.

If you feel that way then don't go there, leave it to the rest of us to enjoy.

Would love to bypass the place, but....

I travel every year with a group of between 10 and 14 guys who are great to travel, but have no imagination...., two weeks of just hanging out.

This year the vote was typical...
13- LABay
1- anywhere else,

sigh,

lost again,

the great trips have been Ascuncion, Gonzaga, cave paintings, Parque Nacional, etc. etc.
but, they just want to grind on down to the dumps every time.

sigh....

scouse - 8-26-2012 at 10:23 AM

See, even you can't deny it...:)

We found a great place north along the beach out of town. A collection of cabana's with a central kitchen with a great, laid back, gregarious guy running it. Forgotten the name sorry to say.

Not sorry I went there. Like I said, driving in was magic. The town shocked me but it did look lik an old 'working town" on it's way up, Sorry I twisted your nickers..:)
Thanks for your advice though :)

Sounds like Camp Gecko and Doc Abraham. That is no longer a camp area... sadly.

woody with a view - 8-26-2012 at 10:45 AM

everyone has there favorites. there are crusty undersides to most places in the world, not just Baja.

i could think of worse places to spend a few days...... and better!

hoping to score "Pterodactyls" next weekend!

scouse - 8-26-2012 at 11:44 AM

Better explain "Pterodactyls" to a new guy..? Yes, I know what they really are/were..:)

woody with a view - 8-26-2012 at 11:53 AM

we surfed here last Sept. hoping it is really big Labor Day weekend so this spot will break. it prolly won't be big enough. Pterodactyls was the name given when i saw this foto. it has other names but i like mine better!

edit: "Pelicans" didn't sound tuff enuff.....

You know what I can't stand most about the place? Snorkeling with the whale sharks and manta rays... that part is an awful burden...
Even worse? Yoking up jurel a short boat ride out. That makes my arms so tired I have to gut and ice them right away so I can go get some wasabi and soy sauce onto 'em.

Totally get it about the town... we really spend hardly any time in town.

I know there is a little social activity in town and some of my friends have good friends in town but we kind of chill and do our own thing.

Sounds like you may have stayed at Villa Bahia... gecko is well south of town.

Places call to you or they don't.... don't want everyone liking the same thing, right?

You know how to live...and you know the area.
Me, well we were heading north at that time and just stopped overnight to see what it was about.
Excellent camoflage to keep the likes of me out.

Have fun there and don't get your toolie sunburnt. :)

That is correct. I am almost 55 and I can't seem to avoid missing a word here and there. My new corrected guesses include Daggett's and La Ventana.
