Gonzaga Bay....Puertecitos

captain4tuna - 4-25-2012 at 07:29 AM

Hola Nomads.......We're in Ensenada and thinking about heading to GB or Puertocitos......Any suggestions on travel? We have a ford diesel 4x4 with a Lance towing a small 4 x 8 cargo trailer......Gracias

woody with a view - 4-25-2012 at 07:35 AM

do it!

willardguy - 4-25-2012 at 09:07 AM

3 east to 5 south all good road

captain4tuna - 4-25-2012 at 09:17 AM

Gracias......

TMW - 4-25-2012 at 09:17 AM

Going thru Puertecitos south there is only about 10 miles of good graded road before Gonzaga Bay. Go for it, you'll be glad you did.

bufeo - 4-25-2012 at 09:37 AM

Just don't forget the NORRA event is this weekend.

mcfez - 4-25-2012 at 10:24 AM

GB is great for fishing...............there are two operating service stations on the route southward once you pass San Felipe.

Once past Puertocitos......about 5 miles.....many good fishing holes off the shoreline......the road is great now going south, there is still a little bit of gravel road 10 or miles prior to GB. The dirt stretch was recently graded, so your tow should be fine.

Punta Final is another great spot near GB
http://www.puntafinal.org/

All these area have great hiking paths too.....lots of wild life.

captain4tuna - 4-25-2012 at 10:53 AM

Many thanks for your replies......

David K - 4-25-2012 at 11:04 AM

Replyed to your U2U... make it a loop trip (either direction: Ensenada-San Felipe-Gonzaga-Chapala-El Rosario-Ensenada)... Have Fun!

1bobo - 4-25-2012 at 11:04 AM

Watch out for the vados. You'll see grooves in the pavement where tongues have hit. Suspension breakers for sure.

Your wife perhaps?

Cabrilla, grouper, roosters, Sierra, pargo, all go off pretty good in the summer and during the spring and winter yellows, pargo, and some really good white seabass fishing.

But the Trigger fishing is best. Light gear....damn good eats.

That answer your question?

captain4tuna - 5-1-2012 at 05:06 PM

Hi McFez....is Diesel available?

David K - 5-1-2012 at 05:15 PM

On the Pacific side, for sure at EL ROSARIO.
On the Gulf side, for sure at SAN FELIPE.

edm1 - 5-1-2012 at 06:26 PM

Reminder: NO Diesel at the GB Pemex.

David K - 5-1-2012 at 06:38 PM

San Felipe to El Rosario (or El Rosario to San Felipe) VIA Gonzaga Bay is about 241 miles.

If you are topped off at either point and have a tank range of 250-300 miles (I should hope), then it is not a worry. If not, bring extra in cans (but fill them in Mexico).

mcfez - 5-2-2012 at 08:11 AM

Puertocitos has Diesel at the camp............ask for Clara (the operator) and she will help out. Speaks English.

willardguy...............
Since you are so up to trolling...come over to the OT and let's see how well you can be a jerk.....

When giving fishing tips, direction or reports its always nice to provide accurate information which may save someone a trip, haven't you been given bum information on one of your many fishing trips, now if you have info from some personal experience that would be great.

You know maybe a picture of something anything? or a story:rolleyes:
Rob

Cypress - 5-6-2012 at 12:01 PM

I've been given some big time bad info regarding fishing in a certain body of water. Took me 4 months to determine that things weren't as advertised. And it's gone down hill since then.

mcfez, You did mention rooster fish! Didn't say you caught any, but they were on your "fish to be caught" list.

What is the fish your wife is holding in upper right corner?

There are still big cabrilla left if you know where to look. My son could see them near our campsite. He was fishing for triggers when he spotted one and just cast a bass worm to it. The thing took it and just ran off across the cove. He never even turned it. Sure miss that place now.

"when he spotted one and just cast a bass worm to it. The thing took it and just ran off across the cove. He never even turned it."

that's the kind of story that keeps me going back time and again! the one that got away....:tumble:

baitcast - 5-6-2012 at 12:27 PM

Its a sierra thats one thing Gonzaga grew to size over the years, bigger sierra look like Wahoo pups:lol:we caught some nice cabrilla off Punta Willard on jigs while were shore bound, speaking of the punta hooked the biggest rooster while in my boat there playing around with some small sierra when this big brute inhaled my fish right along side, last seen he was headed south doing 40 knots and me with this little spinner in hand:lol:
Rob ID the fish on the top left in my right hand?

[Edited on 5-6-2012 by baitcast]

Skipjack Joe - 5-6-2012 at 12:49 PM

Then I'll tell you one more.

In retrospect we knew nothing about cabrilla fishing. My son is an independant sort who often grabs the rod and just takes off. And he experiments much more than I do.

Anyway, he rummaged through the tackle box and found an 8 inch swimbait that's been sitting there for a decade. He works his way along the boulders until he reaches a point with just massive boulders. So he casts and casts and casts with no results. Then on one retrieve an enormous fish shoots out from under his feet and grabs it. The rod bends into a complete arc as the fish dives back under the rock. No amount of pressure could stop it.

He comes running back to the camper wildeyed and out of breath. Tells me the story. There is a frantic search for more lures with him dashing back to the same point. Nothing. But the following day he's out there again and has 2 more breakoffs.

Eventually we put 2 and 2 together and start exploring the coastline. He spots a golden grouper that looks to be 15lbs and it rocks him like the others. I eventually catch up, with my bad knee. and sure enough - there he is. A magnificent specimen. But now he ignores all offerings. And so it went. No big fish landed. Used up all the lures I had. And had a great time.

baitcast - 5-6-2012 at 03:26 PM

In the early trips we had no idea what to do and having no boat made it even worse so it was trial and error and hope for the best, the northern gulf in those days was chuck full a sharks of all sizes and shapes which made for some fun things on the beach:lol:

In the evenings they would come in much closer than daytimes we would position oursleves on the beach waiting for Corvina to show and than the games began, the idea of the games was who gets the hooked fish you or the shark, one evening I hook this fish and up pops the grinner and he is getting excited ,it was a nice fish so I was trying hard to get himhe's close now and the shark is freaking out I reach down to pick up the fish and out jumps the shark right at me,I throw the the rod and fish down and fall backwards and here he comes:lol:

He beaches himself teeth snaping,he is still trying to get the fish on LAND,I let him have the fish:o

Fun and games in the gulf how I miss them.
Rob

mcfez - 5-6-2012 at 03:32 PM

This true. I didnt say I caught any. We all have our favorite to fish for. If anyone wishes to take the intent of the question and answer out of context........I can do that too if you wish.

Baitcast is just taking out his anger on me from a Off Topic debate we had. I wish not to be posting trash.....he needs to troll in the Off Topics.

Well...........here's a picture of some pro wearing "over the knee" water boots. Those are great if a big rouge wave knocks you down into the tide...... and the boots catches the receding water. Many have drowned from that stupidity. Real smart fishing there. ......besides, I thought you have always bragged here that you are a great fisherman off your tin boat. It looks like surfing to me...in this avatar pose of you.

Speaking of your avatar.....I question why you would post such a little fish that you are holding up....in the picture. Is this some sort of trophy....perhaps the largest you got lucky to catch?

Now we did have a little contest some months ago...you showed me your tin boat...and I showed you both of mine...one was tin...the other was not. If I recall correctly....you decided to shut up at that point. You also about the same time got caught lying about your military experience....and then fessed up to being a Draft Dodger. That statement you made is indeed in the BN historic archives.

Let's not make McFez look silly ROB....................it be best that you lay down your hatchet. Are we done now with your little pee.ing game?
