ROAD TO GONZAGA

desertcpl - 5-21-2012 at 09:50 AM

another question, is work still going on with the new highway

how far now is it to Gonzaga, and time frame on when it will reach the bay and Hwy 1?

chuckie - 5-21-2012 at 09:52 AM

Its Mexico..Whats a "time frame"?

David K - 5-21-2012 at 09:57 AM

Just reading the posts here on Nomad, it still is ~10 miles north of Gonzaga, but re-graded better to Gonzaga. Then there are those who sound like they have never been on a dirt road with posts like "Never Again, yadda yadda yadda..." If you can't drive on a dirt road, Baja may not be the best choice to vacation.... If you need pavement to get to Gonzaga, at best the end of this year, but based on the past 5 years history (10 km. a year progress), it will be another year!

Hwy. 1 is 35 miles south of Gonzaga (Pemex/Alfonsina's road), so add another 5-6 years for that (based on the past 5 years progress).

Posted by TW on 8-31-2007:

This was on the San Felipe web site.

New federal highway projects will benefit San Felipe

A list of the new federal priorities for highway construction has been released and there is significant news for the San Felipe region. The first good news is that the road from Puertecitos to Laguna Chapala is to be funded in 2008 and work complete in 2010. This continuation of the two lane road south from San Felipe will be 7 meters wide and have a total length of 110 km. Total estimated cost will be 600 million pesos (approx. $60 million dollars). This will mean that it will be possible to drive from San Felipe and connect up with the main peninsular highway (Route 1) south to La Paz and Los Cabos. We will no longer be the end of the road!
==================================================== :lol:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the dates and distances:

NOV. 2006: Paved to 3 miles north of Puertecitos.
FEB. 2007: Paved to Puertecitos, except for 1.8 mile section.
SEPT. 2008: Paved to 2 miles south of Puertecitos.
JAN. 2009: Paved to 4 miles south of Puertecitos. (2 mi., in 3 mos.)
SEPT. 2009: Paved to 10 miles south of Puertecitos. (6 mi., in 9 mos.)
JULY 2010: Paved 19 miles south of Puertecitos. (9 mi., in 10 mos.)
JULY 2011: Paved 24 miles south of Puertecitos. (5 mi., in 12 mos.)
JAN. 2012: Paved 33 miles south of Puertecitos. (9 mi., in 6 mos.)

So far, it has been about 10 miles a year of progress.

PUERTECITOS TO GONZAGA (Pemex): 45 miles (work began in '08, 13 miles to go Jan. '12)
GONZAGA TO CHAPALA (Hwy. 1): 35 miles

There should be a new section opening soon?

We need to be sure that all the newbies understand that the new road will still have all the Chupacabras y Bandidos in the barrancas along the way that the old road had. The Chupacabras will still sneak out after dark and suck the blood outa yer goat and make the little kids go to be early. The Banidos will still be up there in the barrancas polishing their pistolas and waxing their mustachios just to be ready for a fat Gringo in a Cadillac to stop to take a leak so they can stick him up. All those Bandidos y Chupacabras have been my best friends for years and years...they look forward to better times now that the road will bring all those rich and kinda dumb Gringos down there.

Us old desert rats will have to learn to be nice...gonna be hard.

well last time you called them "yer basic crowd of idiots in camper shells" think maybe its time to fly off to a new more exotic and pristine location, with no roads?:?:

desertcpl - 5-21-2012 at 06:30 PM

Willard

I guess I can understand stand where he is coming from,
but like you,
its one thing to say and think some thing

change will come, whether you like it or not, if you dont like it, like you say, then you must move on

willardguy - 5-21-2012 at 06:41 PM

do you think when papa heard that awful sounding cessna jim atkins landed in 1958 he said "here's yer basic crowd of idiots in cessna's"?

desertcpl - 5-21-2012 at 06:50 PM

No, I dont think Papa would have said that, he welcomed them

bonanza bucko - 5-21-2012 at 07:12 PM

I was one of those idiots in a Cessna not long after that. And I agree Papa would never had said an unkind word about us. He was one of the best and most gentle people I have ever met.

YUP

chuckie - 5-21-2012 at 07:29 PM

I came down in a Chevy blazer, on the OLD road, over the 3 sisters and into Pappas. I had broken a motor mount and torn the exhaust system loose...limped in, making a god awful raquet..there he was , thick glasses and all ,standing in the road with a cold Pacifico...Wonderful man...

captain4tuna - 5-22-2012 at 09:24 AM

Just got back from Puertocitos and Gonzaga........No issures with the road.......Truck with Lance towing a small cargo trailer......Been on a much worse but we always have a memorable time.....Never had a never never yada yada......LOL.....Kayaking, fishing and swimming......

desertcpl - 5-22-2012 at 10:01 AM

so where did you do your camping,,

how long

Pic's

David K - 5-22-2012 at 10:08 AM

Where was the pavement north (of Papa's road, or the Pemex) distance?

captain4tuna - 5-22-2012 at 10:58 AM

We were with another couple and they wanted to stay at Rancho Grande......We personally don't need a palapa and prefer primitive places......The beach was really nice and we had a great time kayaking and swimming but we won't stay there again as the flies were pests like we've never known....so we moved on......They literally covered all surfaces and this was due to the outhouses behind the sites......so we then moved on to Puertocitos at Cristina Beach and over a friend's campo....Had a fantastic fish fry at our friends' Bobby and Carol and Jerry went fishing....Caught Cabrillas and Trigger......On our way out we forgot to delfate our tires and got stuck in sand......Hummer full of elite army guys pulled us out.....It was really amazing.....Refused all kinds of compensation we offered......will send pics later...

sorry david, we only talk in terms of kilometers here. you wanna hear about the flies?

David K - 5-22-2012 at 05:12 PM

I can convert kms. to miles, so fire away!

Flies? Oh, have you been chased around by biting 'horse' flies at Gonzaga like I have (in 1965 and 1974)! ?

Somehow the bay was just so beutiful we went back, anyway... We camped down for the few homes at Alfonsina's, back then... about where the runway ends.

rts551 - 5-22-2012 at 07:17 PM

wellllllll its my fly is bigger than your fly contest...... bring out your flies boys

still about 12 miles
currently,,,,a detour off the graded dirt road for a bit due to the Norra races,(which are over with now),but the detour is still there

David K - 5-23-2012 at 09:01 AM

What have they been doing the past 6 mos., since the pavement was reported to be at that point back then? It was thought that once out of the mountain section to Huerfanito, it would be smooth sailing on the flatlands?

Thanks cj5orion!

willardguy - 5-23-2012 at 10:15 AM

actually david they're working hard on busting thru the mountains just north of the riverbed that flows down to el faro. im guessing there will be a bridge across the river?

David K - 5-23-2012 at 10:19 AM

Thanks! Yes, many bridges (instead of vados) so the highway remains open after chubasco rains!

Just got back from a week in gonzaga. Good trip little wind the road is 15 miles north of rancho grande . the last is well graded 30mph at times but with many poorly marked detours around projects. lots of work, I can hear the equipment from the house in papas working in the wash . I think the next project will end at the wash at papas . If you are fishing make sure to have you fishing licence we were checked two times by Feds/navy nice guys no problems . Dont know if they knew thier laws when I asked why I was not useing tanks when i was spearfishing . When I told them it was aginst the law In Mexico they just smiled and knoded. They asked for lic and ID, did not check fish or boat reg , did wright down names and cf#.
