Just reading the posts here on Nomad, it still is ~10 miles north of Gonzaga, but re-graded better to Gonzaga. Then there are those who sound like they have never been on a dirt road with posts like "Never Again, yadda yadda yadda..." If you can't drive on a dirt road, Baja may not be the best choice to vacation.... If you need pavement to get to Gonzaga, at best the end of this year, but based on the past 5 years history (10 km. a year progress), it will be another year!

Hwy. 1 is 35 miles south of Gonzaga (Pemex/Alfonsina's road), so add another 5-6 years for that (based on the past 5 years progress).

Posted by TW on 8-31-2007:

This was on the San Felipe web site.

New federal highway projects will benefit San Felipe

A list of the new federal priorities for highway construction has been released and there is significant news for the San Felipe region. The first good news is that the road from Puertecitos to Laguna Chapala is to be funded in 2008 and work complete in 2010. This continuation of the two lane road south from San Felipe will be 7 meters wide and have a total length of 110 km. Total estimated cost will be 600 million pesos (approx. $60 million dollars). This will mean that it will be possible to drive from San Felipe and connect up with the main peninsular highway (Route 1) south to La Paz and Los Cabos. We will no longer be the end of the road!
==================================================== :lol:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the dates and distances:

NOV. 2006: Paved to 3 miles north of Puertecitos.
FEB. 2007: Paved to Puertecitos, except for 1.8 mile section.
SEPT. 2008: Paved to 2 miles south of Puertecitos.
JAN. 2009: Paved to 4 miles south of Puertecitos. (2 mi., in 3 mos.)
SEPT. 2009: Paved to 10 miles south of Puertecitos. (6 mi., in 9 mos.)
JULY 2010: Paved 19 miles south of Puertecitos. (9 mi., in 10 mos.)
JULY 2011: Paved 24 miles south of Puertecitos. (5 mi., in 12 mos.)
JAN. 2012: Paved 33 miles south of Puertecitos. (9 mi., in 6 mos.)

So far, it has been about 10 miles a year of progress.

PUERTECITOS TO GONZAGA (Pemex): 45 miles (work began in '08, 13 miles to go Jan. '12)
GONZAGA TO CHAPALA (Hwy. 1): 35 miles

There should be a new section opening soon?

We need to be sure that all the newbies understand that the new road will still have all the Chupacabras y Bandidos in the barrancas along the way that the old road had. The Chupacabras will still sneak out after dark and suck the blood outa yer goat and make the little kids go to be early. The Banidos will still be up there in the barrancas polishing their pistolas and waxing their mustachios just to be ready for a fat Gringo in a Cadillac to stop to take a leak so they can stick him up. All those Bandidos y Chupacabras have been my best friends for years and years...they look forward to better times now that the road will bring all those rich and kinda dumb Gringos down there.

Us old desert rats will have to learn to be nice...gonna be hard.

I was one of those idiots in a Cessna not long after that. And I agree Papa would never had said an unkind word about us. He was one of the best and most gentle people I have ever met.

I came down in a Chevy blazer, on the OLD road, over the 3 sisters and into Pappas. I had broken a motor mount and torn the exhaust system loose...limped in, making a god awful raquet..there he was , thick glasses and all ,standing in the road with a cold Pacifico...Wonderful man...
