A BAJA OASIS

David K - 9-14-2012 at 03:53 PM

Can you guess where?

Udo - 9-14-2012 at 05:31 PM

East of Cataviña, near Santa Ynez Valley.

Boulders look familiar, buddy!

thebajarunner - 9-14-2012 at 06:40 PM

I agree with Udo,
looks like the arroyo just up past the cave paintings.

David K - 9-14-2012 at 09:47 PM

Udo is closer than you Dick... but you are both close! I will add another pretty photo that will cement the answer... once I am back on my PC.

I was just checking some older photos when I spotted these two, and thought they just made nice Baja photos, regardless of subject matter. I don't think I have shared them here before?

Udo - 9-15-2012 at 07:44 AM

Gracias for the nice photo, DK.
:bounce:

BTW...do you own a donut shop in Tustin?
There is a DK Donuts, here in town...I'll snap a photo and send it your way.

BajaBlanca - 9-15-2012 at 08:22 AM

beautiful - wherever it may be.

Mexitron - 9-15-2012 at 08:49 AM

That lava overlying granite always says Catavina area!

David K - 9-15-2012 at 10:39 AM

Okay... just 1/2 mile to the right of the oasis pictured, is another oasis and here is a special photo of it... Now do you know where?

Bajahowodd - 9-15-2012 at 04:18 PM

San Ignacio?:?:

KurtG - 9-15-2012 at 05:44 PM

I have a photo of me holding up that old portal. You may have taken it, David.

Good hint, both KurtG and David K where there at the same time!

(so were Nomads Neal Johns, Baja Bucko, edm-1, BajaTripper, CG, hbmurphy and Baja Angel + others)

Final hint: http://vivabaja.com/msm2010/

Enjoy the adventures of us Nomads in the Baja wilds!

willardguy - 9-15-2012 at 07:07 PM

the mountain in the background looks like the "mash" set in agoura. my guess is the palm trees were photoshopped to throw us off. close?:light:

David K - 9-15-2012 at 07:15 PM

:O nope

Tacodawgtim - 9-15-2012 at 10:10 PM

I'm not sure where it is but I have been thru catavina. I'm heading down next week and I will check it out if you let me know where it is. Or rather I'll try to find it. :D

David K - 9-16-2012 at 10:08 AM

Welcome to Nomad!

I did give the link that tells the whole story as to where the above two photos were taken... here: http://vivabaja.com/msm2010

Do you have a 4WD Off Road Tacoma? If yes, you can get there and back out!

BAJACAT - 9-16-2012 at 12:02 PM

thats the famous portal of Mission Santa maria de los Angeles... a beatifull place that i haven't have to placer to visit...but it's on my bucket list...

David K - 9-17-2012 at 12:06 AM

You should go José! Just park that big Ram truck at Santa Ynez and ride in with me! Actually, if you get past the one big vado about 2 miles from Santa Ynez, then you can make it to the peninsular divide (9.9 miles), and I will take you the remaining 4.5 miles to the mission.

Unless, you think you can get through like Art did with his motor-home... but he did have front and rear lockers!

BAJACAT - 9-19-2012 at 10:47 PM

David, who needs lockers, when you have a RAM...you said "i can ride with you"are you planning a new trip to the mission.. If you are Im in..

David K - 9-19-2012 at 11:49 PM

For a while, I am selling books with that (and all the other) mission(s) in it... and will love to go back some day, but can't say when at the moment.

BAJACAT - 9-25-2012 at 08:31 PM

David, alot times I go and check 4x4 forums from Tijuana, and it's funny how they all mention the bad section before the mission as "THE WIDOW MAKER", they name it in english not spanish.that makes me wonder who was the firts person to call it that. I think it was you, but how all these people know about the name, I dont think all of them, follow BajaNomad.. just curious..

Yep, it was me... I named it the very day BajaMur and I both fell from our motos as we climbed back up it, in May, 1999. Both of us were cut on the rocks and left our blood there. I coined the term when, after several minutes Mur followed me up the grade and was also thrown off his bike! We were both married men, so widow maker seemed very appropriate, specially if we had been killed there!

That was the first trip on my web site: http://www.vivabaja.com/missionsm/index.html

Here are Mur's photos of that trip on his site: http://bajamur.homestead.com/index.html

The late great Baja Mur and myself on May 1, 1999... 10 miles east of Santa Ynez:
